Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

I'm wondering what your opinions are on this.
This kid was in court... in handcuffs... he is 8 years old, charged with premeditated murder of his father and a guy that was renting a room in the house. His father had remarried, I assume his stepmom was not at home at the time.

His father had taught him how to use a gun.

No way should this boy be charged as an adult.

your thoughts?

An article I read said he was being charged as a juvenile for 2 counts of murder. Arizona law allows charges to be filed against anyone 8 years old and up. And the police chief said the boy methodically planned, carried out, and confessed to the murders.

Now, do I think and 8 year old has any concept of what killing another human being actually means? No. I don't think he understands that he would spend the rest of his life in jail. I do think he knew that when he shot his father, his father would die, and it would be a very bad thing to do. So I don't know how I feel about it and obviously I don't know exactly what he did to "methodically plan" the murders. But if the state law allows him to be tried, and the prosecutor wants to try him, then I that's what has to happen.

I am sure the facts will all come out in this case.

But, it begs the question... who would teach their child of 6,7 or 8 years old how to shoot a gun?

I saw the headline, but haven't seen the story, what kind of gun was it?
The reason I ask, is because I don't know that I would be teaching my young child to shoot a handgun because I don't know that they would be ready for that, but I have been shooting rifles and shotguns since I was about 9 or 10. My brother taught his daughter how to shoot his .22 when she was 8. I had a history professor that grew up in the country in Alabama. He told stories about going squirell hunting, with his own gun when he was 10. There is absolutely nothing wrong with teaching your child how to use a firearm. You must also though teach them to respect the firearm.
People always want to make these stories about guns, but guns had absolutely nothing to do with it. That just happened to be the child's weapon of choice. I think instead of worrying about kids and guns, people should be asking why they child would do this. Was he abused? Was he neglected. Was it something else? That is the issue that people should be addressing. Not guns.

My son, 9 knows how to fire a rifle or a shotgun. He goes duck, turkey, and pheasant hunting with me. He also has his own bow, although he has not gone deer hunting with me yet. He understands not to point a weapon at anything he does not intend to kill. However, he has never fired a handgun and if I have anything to do with it never will.

As Hog says, the gun has little to do with it. The tragedy here is that a son killed his father, not that he used a gun to do it.

While I agree that the gun isn't the whole issue, there's very few ways an 8 year old could kill an adult that easily. There's a lot of 8 year old's that still believe in Santa, so I personally think it's ridiculous for someone that young to have access to guns without adult supervision.

it has been reported that the murder weapon was a .22 rifle.

If you have guns, and you have children... either lock up the guns or lock up the ammunition!

They both are, at least in my house.

You can bet that criminals are looking forward to the day Obama and the Dems take away legal gun ownership.

I own two .38's snub nose and long. I also have a young child. The guns will stay at work, until she is much older or until I get a safe for at home. It's easy, really. I am all for gun safety courses for children or through parenting. They do not however need to learn on their own with their buddies.

What type of pistols?

I've been debating on picking one up for home defense. Of course people always say that a shotgun is best just for the noise it makes because most burglars take off running when they hear it.
