Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

well it seems sylvester croom resigned as head football coach for mississippi st. today. that leaves ONLY 2 black head coaches in ncaa div 1. (source espn, no link).
what really pisses me off is the outrage that espn (re: mark may) is making this out to be. he like, wants an african-american to be named head coach of the next 10,20,..maybe 50 positions that come open to level the field.
attenion mr. may,
the reason there arent more "brothers" coaching in d1 is because THEY CAN'T WIN. name me 1 black coach who has 10 years at his school and has a winning record. IT CANNOT BE DONE. lets quit playing the race card and just play football.
jimmy the greek had it right and got fired for his 2 cents.

its because all the great black coaches go straight to the NFL:

1) Tony Dungy
2) Mike Tomlin
3) Marvin Lewis (for now)
4) Herm Edwards
5) Romeo Crennel (for now)

not to mention all the great black assistant coaches (i.e. caldwell). the NFL is stacked with black coaching talent, if the NCAA implemented a similar rule i'm sure there'd be more talent in the NCAA too.

What doesn't make sense to me is why it is such an outrage to have fewer black coaches than white coaches. There are fewer black people in the U.S. than white people, and white people aren't shouting their outrage that there are so few white players in football or basketball. If anything, people saying that more black coaches needs to be hired makes it harder to hire a minority coach. If I were running a program, I would be scared to hire a minority coach because of the outrage that comes when they're fired.

Maybe I'm wrong, but please enlighten me.

people aren't outraged because there are fewer black coaches than white coaches, it's just alarming that there are only 3 black coaches in 1A. the way i see it, if black people account for about 12% of the population, there should be around 10-12% representation in college athletics too. not to mention, the majority of NCAA athletes are black..

The complaining when a minority coach is fired definitely directly hurts the chances of other minority coaches. Probably more than most realize because due to the tiny amount of minority coaches, most applying for jobs are inexperienced, and when you look to hire an inexperienced coach all schools will be making sure they can get out unscathed if it doesn't work out.

OK, so why is it such a big deal that there are less than 12% black coaches? I would almost guarantee that less than 12% of accountants are black. Nobody says a word about the white demographic being underrepresented on the court or on the field. I just think that the race card does not need to played here. I really don't feel like race is motivating hiring decisions. Schools will hire who they feel is the best choice. If anything, the BCA clamoring for more black coaches would make me scared to hire one because of what might happen if he is fired.
