I don't see too much moping here, but Purdue fans I know in real life are WAY overanalyzing the Duke game and going into panic mode. There's nothing to worry about. We outplayed OU on a neutral court (though I don't consider them potential Final Four) and we had a bad night against a very good Duke team. When the Dukies are on their game they can beat anyone by 15 on the road with the exception of maybe 5 teams. One game at a time. It wouldn't be the end of the world if we go into Big Ten play with 2 losses. |

Maybe Painter can figure out why we're getting off to bad starts, and fix that. It's got to be a mental issue. |

slow starts might be an air of overconfidence. last year, when they were fighting for respectability because they knew they were better than their rank they had something to fight for. this year, they started out ranked in the top 10 so perhaps that motivation just wasn't there. the good news for you guys is that now they have a truck full of doubters. purdue needs to come back and prove to the world that they are capable of hanging in the top 10 (of which I think they will do). If there's anything I could describe this team as over the Matt Painter years it's resilient. His teams have gone through some pretty crappy times over the years, slow start in '06 (made NCAA), loss to wofford early in '07 (2nd in BT), and now in '08 they had a couple of disappointing results. it'll be interesting to see how they bounce back, but based on the past few seasons it shouldn't be surprising. |

Agree on the overconfidence. I think this group started reading their press clippings and stopped working as hard on the court. We could use Scott Martin back right about now too. |

I agree partially on the slow start part. I'm not sure if overconfidence is the exact right term, but there is something missing. It seems like we just come out real laid back and calm, when last year we would just go after other teams for 40 minutes. Last year against MSU, their first three possessions were shot clock violation, turnover (in which scored an easy two), and then another shot clock violation. We need to get back to that. Its always nice to have another 6'8 skilled player, but I don't think Scott Martin changes our record. If he wasn't willing to play in the post and rebound, then he wouldn't have done much. We don't need another jump shooter. |

“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves." "I’d take him to the ends of the earth — I’d want him playing for me.” - Bo Ryan on Robbie Hummel

Well either Scott Martin or last year's Keaton Grant would be beneficial right now. |

That's the biggest thing missing right now IMO. He's that third scoring threat that we need. Right now, with our starting five on the court, a team like Duke can take out Moore/Hummel by coming off the other three and clogging things up without having to worry about the other three beating them. I think Keaton is going to take a little bit of time. He pretty much didn't have an off-season, he didn't even start going full speed until October. Its going to take some time to get his legs back under him and get into game shape. If he doesn't, then we will struggle offensively all year, and continue to struggle controlling the other team off the dribble because he is going to be guarding the team's top ball handler all year. |

Slow starts defensively are not overconfidence. It is simply a foul-prone team trying to avoid getting cheap fouls. As time passes, their intensity does pick up. I just can't understand why our shooting is just cold for the first five minutes of every game. |

The guy picked last in gym class
|
Not willing, or wasn't asked to? It's not like he was put in a PF/C position....he was listed as a swingman. And check the rebounding numbers: from his swingman position, he averaged 3.8 rebounds in 21 minutes per game....compare that to what JuJuan and Calasan have put up the last two years in the post. I said it last year and meant it....Martin was the best inside offensive option the Boilers had. I don't think it's unfair to ask why Painter didn't move hjim there. He was asked to put on weight and play more of a post game, from what I've heard, he didn't think that was best for him, so he left. He also wouldn't have been a starter until his senior season, which probably also contributed to his leaving. Scott Martin leaving isn't why we lost to Duke or Oklahoma. |

Scott played the 4/5 position most of the year last year. He was very rarely on the floor along with Hummel and either of Johnson or Calasan. I'm not really sure he was a swingman. He got the ball on the perimeter because thats just part of the motion offense, players get the ball in all different kinds of spots. Scott thought he was perimeter player, when we needed him inside. He didn't agree, and left. Good riddance. |
