Valid point, but I think most kids are never even going to hear about it since they don't watch the news or read the papers.. It would have to be the parents that would have a problem with it and I just don't think it is that big of a deal anymore. I may be way off base, |

I agree that it's not a big deal, but the parents are the ones that buy the cereal, so if they see Michael Phelps on the box and that image hits them... probably not a good marketing strategy. Same way they market towards being healthy now even though kids don't give a shit how much sugar is in their food, but their parents do. There's actually a somewhat interesting show on the medicinal marijuana business right now on CNBC that my fiance has on. Personally, I think pot's a lot safer than alcohol, but marketing is all about image, and there's still a lot of people out there that view it negatively. There's people I work with that group marijuana with all other drugs. Pretty much all of them have never seen let a lone smoked marijuana, so they have no idea what it's like. For all they know, someone on marijuana is the same as someone on PCP or crack. |

If I'm an executive from Kellogg's, I'd drop him as well. Forget whether or not you agree with its legalization....there are plenty of athletes who didn't make the news for its's use and aren't currently suspended for three months that can pitch your product. Dollars and cents say you drop him, and if I'm a stockholder I'd back the move as well. And whether you beer and marijuana use are the same is irrelevant....one is legal, the other isn't. Kellogg's isn't in the business of making statements about the right or wrong on marijuana use, they are in the business of selling a product and they most likely had legality clauses in Phelps deal. They would be foolish not to drop him. BTW, my Gifted and Talented class is currently in a unit on debate and one of the four issues they will be debating is the statement "Marijuana should be legalized in the United States." The topics I pick are based on survey results from the class..I pick the topics that look to have about the same number of students on both sides. Of the 25 students in the questionairre, 10 were for legalization and 15 were against. My guess is that if the question were asked schoolwide, it would have been even more on the legalization side. This year's topics are: 1. Marijuana issue as stated above. 2. The drinking age should be lowered to 18. 3. Abortion should be illegal in the United States. 4. School should be year round (2 months on, 1 month off). Debate format is Lincoln-Douglas. Basically each team gives an open, then there is cross examination, and ends with rebuttal. The onus is on the affirmative side (the one agreeing with the statement); they must prove their case to win, kind of like the prosecution in a trial; for this reason, the affirmative is given two rebuttals to the opposition's one. I do not give the students my opinion (it's irrelevant in terms of the debate) and students don't get to cherry pick the side which they get to debate, meaning some students are going to have to argue for a side of a debate that they do not believe in. I'll let everyone know how the marijuana debate turns out. |

Don't know if anyone caught it, but apparantley in the Olympics the US delegate had placed a bag of cheetos on the other side of the pool to make Phelps swim faster. |

Very good points. When you have these reality shows on tv about DEA agents suiting up in their SWAT gear, and packing more heat than the Army, Just to bust down a door and arrest some guy with a couple ounces of marijuana. That makes the average viewer think that is a much worse drug, and thanking the good lord this guy is now off the streets. It is almost comical. Typing from blackberry forgive grammatical errors |

I see what you're saying. On a side note I have never tried it myself, so I am arguing a point I do not have first hand experience with. I have just read studies on it. |

well, I don't think he had a prescription for that hit, so it was illegal....perhaps it shouldn't be, but sponsors don't like their guys getting caught on film breaking the law. |

If they just legalized and taxed the shit, everyone could quit bitching about it and everyone would be chill. America will get smart sooner or later, I think we're on the way... People who are put in prison for pot is unnecessary as hell. Save the room for CRIMINALS. By the way, the Baby Boomers are still the most cannabis using generation, but I believe my generation HAS to be right behind. I know a lot of people who smoke, or at least have. And not just around this area. Alcohol kills. Pot doesn't. Point proven, legalize the shit. |

The majority of the Criminal Justice community agrees. They're not for legalization but for decriminalization. To those who've never heard that term, it would make pot more comparable to a speeding ticket. You get caught with a joint, you get a fine. Overall, the jail system isn't extremely tied up with marijuana charges because most are let free for minor possessions. The biggest hurt is due to courts being tied up. |
