Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

I came to the shocking realization at work today (AFTER I got high, mind you) that I completely forgot that I have a paper on Obama's coronation due tomorrow for my Poly Sci class. Assuming I don't totally BS it, I'll post it in this thread tomorrow.

The guy who teaches mine is pretty cool.

In other news, I just got done watching the inauguration speech. Christ.....The crowd reminded me of the crowds who worship Kim Jong Il in N. Korea. :puke:

at least you don't have the ho i had. c. barbour is the biggest bitch in the poly sci department though -- i had her for Y103. i'm pretty sure my y318 professor was mccain's mistress -- we had to analyze his campaign in two separate papers; and she was always talking him up. that class is easy as hell though, all they really care about is that you have coherent thoughts -- it could be complete bullshit for all they care.

Nah...

Here's what I have so far... (As you're about to see, I'm failing miserably at taking this assignment seriously.)

I can’t believe what I just saw! -actually, “what I didn’t see” would be more accurate: WHERE’S THE UNICORN?! Unless my eyes deceived me, I was witness to no such mythical creature. I cannot believe that of the $152 million spent on the inauguration (in comparison to Dubya’s “meager” $44 million), not a dime of it was allocated to securing a magical unicorn upon which Barack Obama could descend from the heavens, spreading his cure-all pixie dust as he went. Suffice it to say that somebody needs to be fired for this blunder!
All kidding aside (well, most at least), Barack Obama is a stalwart of oratory. The way he managed to whip the crowd into bouts of uproarious applause and chant is second only to the most exalted Kim Jong Il of North Korea. The only flinch in Obama’s demeanor was during the swearing in, during which both he and Justice Roberts fouled up. Other than this slight gaffe, he remained cool and composed, his voice carrying off into every conceivable corner of the globe; the freshly elected “leader of the free world” has spoken.
He has spoken of a “new” day, a day in which “all are equal” (a statement that runs quite contrary to nature, I must say); a day in which the people should no longer question what the government “can do”, but what it “must do”; a day in which “bold and swift action” must be taken to cure the economic woes currently facing every American (at which point in time he proceeded to list off long-debunked economic fallacies in seriatim)…*Yawn* This all sounds strangely familiar…I’m quite certain I’ve heard this exact sentiment expressed countless times by numerous (in fact, nearly every) politician throughout the ages. Indeed, politicians have been putting forth this exact message on a bumbling, unsuspecting public from day one: nothing new here. Sadly, the ignorant masses (and my! was there one hell of an ignorant mass in Washington D.C. this cold January afternoon) fail to realize the folly of their blind faith in politicians. They are seemingly incapable of understanding that politics is merely the collusion of well-organized despots acting in their own selfish interests; that government is coercion; that the state offers no true solutions and is in fact incapable of protecting one’s freedoms and liberties, for by its mere existence, it has already committed an act of aggression against the individual.

Bah..........It's 4:20 AM and I'm finally finished. The assignment was a bit bland, so I felt it necessary to spice it up a bit. Hence my vitriolic language and off the wall writing style. I'm tired as shit, and only quickly proofread my words, so obviously it isn't my best work, but I'm satisfied. I'm sure the professor will have quite a bit to say about it, be it for better or worse...The paper is supposed to be broken down into three parts. In part one, I was supposed to write my reactions to watching the speech. Part two required me to write my reactions after reading the speech. And in part three the object was to juxtapose the two media and determine which was more effective. Boring! Anyway, here goes...

Part One
I can’t believe what I just saw! -actually, “what I didn’t see” is more accurate: WHERE’S THE UNICORN?! Suffice it to say that some heads need to roll for this blunder!
He has spoken of a “new” day, a day in which “all are equal” (a statement that runs quite contrary to nature, I must say); a day in which the people should no longer question what the government “can do”, but what it “must do”; a day in which “bold and swift action” must be taken to cure the economic woes currently facing every American (followed by him listing off economic fallacies in seriatim)…
*Yawn* This all sounds strangely familiar…I’m quite certain I’ve heard this exact sentiment expressed countless times by nearly every politician throughout the ages. Indeed, politicians have been putting forth this exact message on a bumbling, unsuspecting public from day one: nothing new here. Sadly, the ignorant masses (and my!, was there one hell of an ignorant mass in Washington D.C. this cold January afternoon) fail to realize the folly of their blind faith in politicians. They are seemingly incapable of understanding that politics is merely the collusion of well-organized despots acting in their own selfish interests; that government is coercion; that the state offers no true solutions to the woes of mankind…But boy did he sure look and sound great! Atta boy, Obama!

Part Two
Reading through the speech, I cannot help but come away with an even more cynical outlook on the Obama presidency. Only in writing do the full content and context of his words sink in. Right off the bat, he invokes the Founding Fathers, and the document that binds us all, the Constitution. He implies that we have “remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents”. Life must be good on Fantasy Island, where zombie Thomas Jefferson and James Madison gallivant freely, reminiscing about how the state usurpation of social power and the inevitable atrophy of society’s general disposition toward helping those in need that goes with it were the bedrock principles upon which this nation were founded. I can only imagine how delightfully splendid the weather must be!
“Our nation is at war…” he says. His plan? Reposition the troops from Iraq into Afghanistan and Pakistan. “Our economy is badly weakened…” Of course, he doesn’t take into consideration the role of monetary policy or other governmental interventions in the current economic calamity, instead opting to recite the ever-popular line that our supposedly “free markets” are to be held responsible and that even more state meddling in our economic affairs is the only cure. “Our health care is too costly…” Once again, he somehow manages to gloss over the role rampant government intervention has played in the skyrocketing costs of health care, instead putting forth a “solution” that calls for more cyanide to be given to the poisoned patient.
Then, to my astonishment, he utters four words that I’ve been saying for months if not years: “…American’s decline is inevitable…” Of course, these words were part of a larger statement, one that was meant to disprove the notion that our decline is inevitable, but who’s keeping track, right?
All bitching aside, Obama is a master of written and spoken language, and his communication skills are second to none. The speech is written in a clear, concise manner. It is not verbose, but succinct. It does not ramble, but is eloquent. If only it were not rife with economic fallacies, false promises, and empty rhetoric!

Part Three
In this third and final installment of this assignment, my style will deviate from the first two essays. I will, believe it or not, attempt to put my political and economic convictions aside and act as if I was neither an Obama supporter nor an Obama hater.
Both the visual presentation and the written text of the speech were powerful in themselves, and both had particular advantages over the other. For instance, Obama is as good, if not better, an orator than an author. Hence, his delivery technique is strikingly powerful. There is no doubt in my mind that he will end up in the upper echelon of orators in history, joining the ranks of, for better or worse, FDR, Hitler, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., and others. His voice was clear, his thoughts were composed, and his memory was impeccable.
However, it is easy to be glazed over by the sheer force of his oratory skill. I can only imagine how many members of the audience, both present at the inauguration and watching from home, simply failed to comprehend his words, but were rather (by choice or subconsciously) lulled into a trance by his rhythmic recital. For this reason, it is important to return to the original text version of the document for a more in depth study of what was actually said. The serious scholar with undoubtedly study both in his attempt to determine the document’s historical significance as well as the validity of the statements contained within.
To the average American citizen (who, it seems, has the attention span of a mentally challenged dog), the actual recital of the speech was surely hard enough to take in, so I hold little hope that a large percentage of the masses decided to sit down and scrutinize a text copy of the speech. Due to my conclusion regarding my fellow man’s lack of attention and ambition to understand, my “vote” (pun absolutely intended) has to go with the recital of the speech as the being the most fruitful of the two media.

Very impressive and in the current college atmosphere of heavily left ideals, I will say it is pretty "Ballsy". Especially since you were half high and even more tired! You have put down in words what many of us conservatives and libertarians have been saying since the former nobody state senator from the great state of Illinois, talked his way into the hearts and minds of America. With Obama, the style is there, we are all just waiting with baited breath and open wallets for the substance. I give you an A+.

i agree with md11flyer, i gave you an "A" last night on the first part. i wanna upgrade to "A+". good job old school. i wonder if your teacher will even recognize the satire, or view it as a "hit piece" on the new president. depending on their political ideology.
maybe both of us will be on that "watch list?"
