Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

At 5-14, 0-7 in the conference, I figured we've probably seen enough of Tom Crean to go ahead a write down the first mark in his 'grade card'. Albeit through some extreme adversity in his first year, we have to look past what Sampson left on his plate and try to grade Crean with what he has been handed.

Objectively speaking, how is he performing on the floor?

Before the beginning of this year, I decided to take 'winning and losing' out of the formula (I know Lars, you told me so) on which I would grade him. I found myself asking these questions:

1. Will the lack of talent and experience affect how he coaches on the court?
2. Does he coach objectively, merely preparing a young team for the future? (knowing help is on it's way)
3. Considering with what he has to work with, is he making good, on the fly decisions?
4. Are his decisions questioned more often than not?
5. Are the correct personnel on the floor at the right times?
6. Is the team physically in shape?
7. Do they hustle 100% of the time?

To be honest, I have found myself questioning some on the floor moves, timely substitutions, and the fact that there are some players standing around on offense. Taking all the criteria into account, I can't quite pinpoint what Tom Crean's objectives are with this particular team. I'm inclined to believe that the lack of talent somewhat leaves him clusterfucked, and he simply has to deal with what he has.

And that's next to zero.

Again, taking all the criteria into account, I'm going to base his grade from all that I've seen so far, with the emphasis being on one game. I believe the Michigan game held the formula to potentially expose the whole spectrum of one's (coaching) abilities.

1. He is coaching one of the youngest, and least talented Division 1 teams I may have seen in my entire lifetime, and has them beating a ranked team (#24 Michigan) by 20+ points.

A+

2. Somehow, he allows a total breakdown, and Michigan storms back from 20+ down to win the game. IN ONE HALF

D-

Normally I would have given him a C, but have to raise the score a tad considering how monumentally weak this team really is. I mean, you have to have something to work with.

At his point in the season, I give him a B-

I agree he is in the B range, but I gotta tell ya that they have looked much better recently than they did in the beginning of the Big Ten season. If they keep improving and even (gasp!) win a couple games, I'd bump him up to an A.

To sum it up, this is sort of my point:

In the Northwestern game, I thought Crean was going to pull his fucking hair out trying to decide who to keep on the court to handle the ball, Verdell Jones, or Danny Moore.

I've nicknamed them The Turnover Brothers :balls:

Despite just a B-, I bet his alcohol consumption is on the up this year.

At least one of these two could probably get the ball inbounds.

I'd still put the odds on a blind Stevie over these two.

Recruiting I'd give him a solid A. For off the court stuff, like getting good kids who go to class and loving IU's tradition, I give him an A. For coaching, with all factors under consideration, I'd give a B thus far. It could be bumped up later or drop depending on the rest of the season. On one hand I know we have a group of freshmen with no experience and only a few really have the talent to be even playing in the Big 10. I don't think he could be expected to do much with this group, just like I don't think any coach in American could really make this team too competitive in a major conference. On the other hand a couple "key" players aren't showing a lot of improvement in their decision making. Whether thats him or them just being young and still learning I don't know. We never should have lost those two non-conference games at home and we shouldn't have blown the Michigan game. With that said all teams, even the best, have off nights and blow games they should win, especially inexperienced teams. There are things about his coaching to like to, like the kids hustle and play hard and don't really give up even when they're outmatched. Sorry to ramble some.

Overall grade: B+ I feel pretty good about our program's future.

he gets a "B" from me. hes got kids playing that will never sniff the floor again after this year. (albeit a couple). the lipscomb and michigan loss is what hurt him. i know he hasnt got shit, but if you manage to build a 20 pt lead, you need to win the game.
a friend of mine is upset crean hasnt gotten a technical yet. says he aint coaching hard. i said fuck, we cant afford to give 2 ft's and a possession just to prove a point. (see nw game when 2 no-call travels cost us the game. :fuckyou: dc.)

You know, I never really thought about it, but maybe your friend has a point. Despite the score, I think he needs to haul the fuck off and throw that diet coke across the floor. I mean really, what do we have to lose?

See how the kids respond.
