It is confirmed that this lady and her 6 kids are already on multiple forms of welfare. The kicker, here is a quote from this idiot. "In her view these are just payments made for people with legitimate needs and are not, in her view, welfare," Furtney said. "She just believes that there are programs for people with needs and she and her children qualify for some of them." (actually from her publicist) Does this represent the majority of Americans' views on what "welfare" is and where the blatant misunderstanding of where that money comes from? |

you know what pisses me off? ive been out of work for 6 weeks now. the only public assistance ive applied for is "hoosier healthwise" insurance for my kids. i lost my insurance when i lost my job. my wife and i are without and will remain without until i go back to work. with me only bringing in $390/wk on unemployment we are below the income guidelines and "qualify". just today, i had to send in more documents before my claim is processed. 6 weeks of song and dances just to get emergency insurance for my kids and im still lost in the system. ive paid into this for 22 years now... |

I think a lot of it stems from people that have never seen large chunks of their money go towards taxes. That's why most kids (not all) don't have a problem with spending. They don't understand the concept of how social welfare programs are supported. So in the choice of feeding the poor or not feeding the poor, they're obviously going to feed the poor. Then the ones that do get jobs, realize that they're directly feeding the poor, and that's when they become more fiscally conservative. The ones that never pay into the system never understand that while the money is coming from the government, the government gets it from their friends and neighbors that do have jobs. And while the friends and neighbors don't mind actually 'feeding' the poor, it tends to be a point of agitation when they see luxury goods purchased with their tax money. |

Good summary, Faithful. This is why socialism on a governmental scale is always doomed to failure. Those on the dole will eventually see their handouts as entitlements, and the working class becomes disgruntled from seeing their hard earned money confiscated by the government. Eventually the economic system collapses. (see former USSR) Socialism on a family scale works, because there is personal contact, and tough love can be applied if necessary. |

I have no idea what "Hoosier Healthwise" is, but aren't you eligible for COBRA for insurance? |

I'm not very familiar with COBRA other than knowing people that got it after college... it was ridiculously expensive. |

You should have zero guilt for getting some assistance from the system. But you will, which is why this country has managed to be successful, and most people feel motivated to get back on their feet. What's scary is to consider a large number of Obama supporters are on the dole, and think they are entitled to government money. In fact, they just keep wanting more. At some point, the safety net is only slightly lower than what the middle class earns, and that undermines motivation and one's feeling of self-worth. I think we passed the tipping point with the election of The Messiah, and hope the pain we feel the next few years will allow us to tip back to the good side. |

Adding to your point, I'd actually be extremely happy if Trouble took advantage of every benefit he can from the government right now because if I could get my tax dollars back, I'd gladly give them all to him. His situation is what the system was intended for. It's a short-term fix for someone that had bad luck come their way. I don't think there's very many people that have a problem seeing their tax dollars go to help people that are trying to help themselves. |
