Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

I think most athletic departments are run through donations FWIW. Obviously, revenue from tickets and merchandise help, but I'm fairly certain almost all of them are run without state assistance or money from the actual university.
idk, ask jim calhoun. haha. :D
I would have smacked that reporter upside the head.

FWIW, the school didn't buy out sampson -- and the legal fees got covered by donors too.
I would still call that a loss of money for the university...If they didn't have to buy sampson out the money would have gone to the university instead, no? ^o)
no, probably not actually. if you do what i do, you'd find out IU donors have big pockets.
I guess what I'm saying is that people donate to the university with a certain amount of money in mind...JMO but I wouldn't think that people would be calling into the IU donation center to give "extra" money to pay off samson than they already have
a certain donor paid of sampson, not a collection. i work in the athletic office, and i take donations on a regular basis. IU's athletic department is pretty unique in that it's run almost completely off donations. i see what you're saying, and that'd be the case for most situations and most schools; but the way IU run things is a little bit different.
I didn't realize that the donation was done by one donor. I may just be ignorant to how the legality of the situation would work but if IU just would have waited for the NCAA to say that Sampson couldn't coach college for 5 years would that mean that the contract would be broken without IU having to pay?
umm, sampson's contract was pretty vague, and going by precedent set by jim o'brien at Ohio State, universities have to watch their step when firing coaches. if the certain donor wouldn't have made the donation, i'm certain that IU still would have fired sampson; but his little parting gift made sure he wouldn't open his mouth.

yeah, but calhoun was out of line for telling the reporter to shutup. He shone a negative light on the University for that.

I heard the "reporter" obtained a pass illegally anyways. Then he asks about the economy at a press conference after a game? The University should be ashamed that they let an idiot like that into the press conference after the game.

I'm sure that University does wonders for the state of Connecticut. And as I'm sure UCONN's athletic department is self-sufficient and run on donations, Calhoun's salary is paid for by people who know what they are donating their money to, unlike giving it to the government.

Fuck that idiot.

The governor overseeing a giant budget deficit calling out the basketball coach of the public university. Brilliant.

It wasn't a assumption; it was an opinion. I just know what I would do (I donate to my school by the way). The whole argument is kinda a mute point considering it only takes one rich MFer to think it's worth the money.

He also makes a really good point about the revenue he brings in for the school. (And who pays him for that matter)

yeah, the point he makes about revenue is pretty good -- it's just the way he handles himself the whole time, there are a lot better ways to go about dealing with that.

I'd say the same thing about the guy who fabricated his profession, lied to get his way into the press conference, and then jumped in when not called on to get his question asked.

Fucking idiot.

Calhoun is the highest paid state employee in Conneticut. It is a very valid question, just asked at the wrong time. Should a state school be paying 1.6 million of taxpayers dollars to pay a basketball coach? All other state employees are faced with possible lay-offs or pay cuts..........it is a valid question.

look how much money he brings into the state. it's relative.

also, look how much money of his salary is paid via donatoins.

crean makes 2.1 million a year, i dont see a whole lot of people crying foul over that..
