Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

UB, was this the "monster" recruit for 2010 that you said was going to be committing to IU within the next couple of months?
“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves."

"I’d take him to the ends of the earth — I’d want him playing for me.” - Bo Ryan on Robbie Hummel

He's pretty tall, so I will say he is a coat rack.

Interesting they consider him a "big guard" and then say that he's still growing. I see a transition to forward in the very near future.

Even if he transitions to a Forward, at least he should be able to handle the rock pretty well. At least that's the optimist in me.

Sounds like Jalen Rose to me.

When the story came out Wednesday night that IU had picked up its first commitment in the Class of 2010, the obvious question on everyone's mind was: Who exactly is David Williams?

The information we had in the paper this morning was a two-paragraph note that listed him as a 6-8, 220-pound guard/forward who averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds and six assists last season as a junior at First Coast High School in Jacksonville, Fla. We also wrote that he chose IU over Kentucky, Florida, Clemson, Miami and South Carolina.

Beyond that, we don't know a lot. We know that the IU connection came because he had played for IU assistant coach Roshown McLeod in AAU as a member of the Atlanta Celtics, the same program that A.J. Moye and Jeff Newton had played for in terms of former Hoosiers.

We also know that Tom Crean was on hand in Jacksonville Wednesday to watch Williams participate in open gym. And we know that as of now any way, Williams is not ranked in the rivals.com top 150 but many feel he is a player who has flown under the radar a bit.

But other than that, the details are sketchy at best.

I caught up with his high school coach at First Coast, Charles Showers, this morning and here's what he had to allow about his standout player.

1. First of all, exactly how tall is David? I've seen him listed at 6-6, 6-7 and 6-8?

"He's 6-7 and still growing. He weighs right at 220. But he's all of 6-7."

2. And what position does he play? Again, I've seen him described as a forward and also as a big guard?

"Actually, he plays all five positions for us but he's more of a 1, 2 or 3. I'd definitely call him a big guard.''

3. What are the things he does well?

"He sees the floor really well. He's a great finisher. He's a big rebounding guard. You can put him on the box and he can rebound and kick it out and then beat everybody else down the floor. He's just a big guard who can handle the ball really well and distribute it, too.''

4. With all of the schools recruiting him down there, were you surprised that Indiana was able to get him to commit? I know about the Roshown McLeod connection but I also know there were some pretty big schools in that area who were interested, too.

"I wasn't really surprised that he chose Indiana, but I was surprised that he accepted their offer last night. I really anticipated that eventually he would commit to Indiana because of coach McLeod and also he has always been a big fan of Big Ten basketball. And that's because of the big guards they have in the Big Ten. He has always felt that his strength would be better suited for the Big Ten. Down in the South, we have a lot of smaller guards, shooting guards, that they like to recruit and he just didn't feel like he would fit in with the style down this way.''

5. This probably isn't fair but so many people the first thing they look at is whether or not a player is ranked in the rivals.com top 150 or scout.com or something like that. I've heard from others that in his case he has kind of flown under the radar a little bit. Would you agree?

"Exactly. I thought he was one of the best kept secrets around until last year when the AAU circuit kind of put him out there and that's when all of the interest starting pouring in. In my opinion, he is the kind of player that easily could be in the top 75 very, very soon. I think Indiana saw a lot of potential in him and that's what we've been hearing from a lot of other schools, too. I think it's a great choice for both David and for Indiana. I don't think they'll go wrong at all.''

6. I've seen it reported that he had interest from a lot of different schools down there, and at least one outlet reported that IU was actually his first offer. Is that correct?

"No, he also had an offer from Clemson for sure and I'm not sure if there had been others. I know he had a lot of interest from South Carollina, the University of Miami, Ole Miss, Florida, Auburn and Kentucky. There may have been a few others, too, that I'm not remembering off the top of my head.''

7. As his high school coach, you've got to be pretty excited for him today?

"I'm very excited. I've had him ever since ninth grade and he's come a long, long way. He led us to our first ever District title in the school's history last season and that's really big around here. But I'm really excited for him because he just deserves this so much. He's a really good player and a really fine person.''

So that's tells us a little bit more than we knew last night. I've got a call out to David's father and I'm hoping to speak with David tonight after school.

With this news, Indiana now has its first recruit in the class of 2010. As of right now, indiana has two more spots available in that class but that number can always increase if anyone else were to leave. Right now though, the working number is two available scholarships and as we found out in the last class, IU is allowed to oversign by one player under Big Ten rules.

Didn't DC once say that player's who are not rated in the top 150, but close will eventually move up in the rankings if they commit to a top D1 program. Maybe I am wrong. But I do predict he will be in the top 150 by the end of the AAU season. He plays on a team that produced Dwight Howard, Josh Smith, and ex-IU players AJ Moye and Jeff Newton. I am not sure, but I think either Cousins or Favors or maybe both played on that team.

I am going to wait for my final judgement once the AAU season stops. But I will tell you that I like this recruit for several reasons:
1) 3.8 GPA - Good student/Athlete
2) Can handle the ball and plays like a guard at 6-7 or 6-8.
3) Will cause matchup problems like Calbert Cheaney did, but I am not comparing him to Chaney. Didn't Cheaney fly under the radar?
