brum, my guess would be that what you described is/had happened in many states. If that is the case, look for the federal government to see that as an opportunity to take further control of the public school system. It's the perfect storm for that, and very ironic that it is essentially caused by their management (mismanagement) of the auto bankruptcies to begin with. |

The federal government already is running the schools in terms of everything No Child Left Behind encompasses. Schools have been forced to become standardized test taking machines to pass state graduation exams...but those exams were predicated by NCLB legislation. Anyway, I don't see a logical connection between teacher's pension and legislation involving curriculum. The federal government already is involved in curriculum. |

if there is any level of state, city, county autonomy, the federal government will want to eliminate it. It might not have much of an impact if they are really already running the show, but I see things like all-day kindergarten that seem to vary from county to county.....the fed will have to fix that I guess :( |

In the current economy, all day kindergarten is pretty much out in most areas. Summer remediation is going to be an incredible low in the state of Indiana this year. In my district, there will be no elementary or middle school remediation and I expect this is happening in most of Indiana as the state is not refunding most monies. In the past, you could expect that remediation would be mostly paid for. |

they keep adding all-day kindergarten to schools in Allen County every year. They haven't chanded one back ever, and I believe they have a plan to have all schools running all day K by 2010. |

All-day kindergarten has been put on the back-burner in NW Indiana. The funding simply isn't there. Has Allen County had rising property taxes to fund the all-day kindergarten? Also, are ALL kindergartners required to have all-day kindergarten? |

Allen county had a huge property tax debacle in 2006 where they went through the roof, but it wasn't due to ADK, it was a property value assessment problem. In some areas they went through the roof (mostly inside city limits), but in the county/rural areas they were steady. Since then they have been drastically lowered, which goes along with the new state property tax cap. Children aren't required to go to kindergarten at all in Allen County, however if they go to to kindergarten at an ADK school, then yes they are required to go all day. Fort Wayne Community schools, and all of the County school systems have serious funding issues right now, but in everything I have read, ADK hasn't even been mentioned as something to take off of the table. They are proposing closing and combining several schools, and FWCS just cut over 200 teaching jobs meanwhile enrollment is increasing. I would love it if they would all take ADK off of the table to save money....I think it is stupid, but they think it helps the working mom because it is essentially free daycare. |

I would assume that when you say FWCS 'cut' 200 jobs, they in fact were RIF (reduction in force). Mass RIFs occur in the spring as school systems legally have a deadline of warning teachers that their jobs are in jeopardy of being lost. Typically most jobs are not lost, but since a school system needs to play in safe and they don't know exactly what positions will be lost, they have to send out RIFs in mass. The Gary school corporation sent out 110 RIF notices a couple of weeks ago as they consolidate schools...most of the positions will not end up being lost, but since they can't say which ones will be, they have to notify all possible positions. Now, in terms of all day kindergarten, studies have shown that it does help low-ability students to have the longer day. In my district not every student in kindergarten had ADK....students that exhibited the need due to their skill set were offered it. It probably worked out to 10-20% of the kindergarten enrollment. NCLB is a classic example of what happens when well meaning bureaucrats try to solve a problem. It almost always ends up as a cluster fuck. |

It's what happens when BOTH democrats and republicans get together and say 'you know, I don't think we can fuck this up enough on our own....let's both get in on it.' |

2 more points that came back to my attention from listening to commentary last night 1) There are several AMERICAN car companies in existence today who are turning a profit and paying taxes. Has it occured to us that they are essentially being forced to financially support their competition who would love to put them out of business? 2) Has anyone heard a clear answer as to why they are shutting down (GM & Chrysler) so many dealerships as part of their plan? Every dealer and commentator that I have heard to date can't even begin to understand this and how it will even remotely improve the companies. |

Excellent point, Aaron. Why is it that direct competitors to GM and Chrysler (aka, American Subaru, Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan) are not up in arms over this? As large corporations they pay their fair share in taxes every year, which in turn is going to prop up businesses that compete against them. This is an angle that I have not really thought about much, having been so enraged over the other aspects of the blatant attack on Capitalism with this bailout BS. This issue here is at the core of this whole debate and is really the root of all that is wrong with bailouts. Do you think the other motor companies have a right to sue the Government over propping up their competitors with their tax dollars? |

boiler, you forgot one very important one in that equation....FORD MOTOR COMPANY. I would be enraged if I was Ford, however I think they will keep it quiet to make sure they don't have a foot in their mouth when they ask for money. To answer your question, I personally think they would have a solid complaint if they were to file suit, but we must remember that it is the government who rules on cases like this, so they aren't likely to rule against themselves very often. |
