Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

I am sure i will get called a socialist liberal for this idea. This year is school board election and local govt elections in Raleigh. I somehow ended up on the Wake county GOP executive committee. We have been talking about issues facing the school system.

I have an idea that maybe has been tried before but wanted your opinion on it.

I had to do a research paper in college on and found an idea former Rep Dick Gephardt tried to pass legislation to basically turn grammar schools into day care centers. I do view that as socialism and the state paying for daycare. I was considering working on a private funded program similar. I know that in Wake County operating expenses and teacher salaries seem to be a big issue.

MY IDEA - fund this through private funding and pay the schools for use of facilities and pay the teachers for the continued workday. Have you ever heard of a student development program. offering after school music, foreign language, athletic programs. I know most areas already have youth basketball and pee wee. bantam, pop Warner football programs. Combine these organizations with the schools to offer after school development programs and and extensive club program. This program would not be funded buy the state or local govts but from individual and business sponsors. The specific of the programs could be determined by the local chapters. I think this would be a positive service in an era with large number of divorced parents, single mothers and dual working parents.

I would not support the state funding such a program but if privately funded and the schools received operating compensation for the use of the schools and equipment. This would be a way for extra income for teachers. I have a close friend in Indy that is single and a teacher. She has always had a part time job to help make ends meet. I know alot of teachers have part time jobs.

Our school disctrict has a program for before and after school care. It is not free, but it does use the school facilities. If you have enrolled your children, we are allowed to bring our children to EDP(extended day program) at 7am and after class they can stay until 6pm. There is a $15 per 5 minute late charge, if you do not get the children by 6. They can get breakfast for an additional fee.

There are several bonuses to this program. It is at the school, they have exclusive usage rights to the gym and the playground. There is a teacher who heads up this program, and then there are several high school students who share duty in the morning and the evenings. If they are working on homework they can get help and tutoring from the high school kids. There are structured activites, and in the summer field trips and the like. The cost is $165 per month per child, which is substantially cheaper than private day care.

If you want more information, just ask, but our program is fairly standard in Oklahoma.

"Liberal, shmiberal. That should be a new word. Shmiberal: one who is assumed liberal, just because he's a professional whiner in the newspaper. If you'll read the subtext for many of those old strips, you'll find the heart of an old-fashioned Libertarian. And I'd be a Libertarian, if they weren't all a bunch of tax-dodging professional whiners." - Berkeley Breathed
