Well Minions, true to my word, I am now able to provide the low-down on the Irving down-low. Don't believe what Scouts, Peegs, GBI or Ddums has offered regarding Irving's recruitment by IU. Here's the scoop: First a little background on my involvement with the in-home visit by Crean and his staff a few weeks back. While I'm widely considered an IU FOP (friend of the program), I don't like to get involved with the unseemly world of recruiting - see Happy from Blue Chips - Fred Glass asked me if I'd like to make the trip to Elizabeth NJ to help Crean & co make a favorable impression with the Irving posse. Being a fan of NY and needing to get better aquainted with the coaching staff, I thought why not? So I flew out the morning of the visit into Newark NJ. Quite the armpit it is. I first had to check into my room in Weehawken and then strolled down to Hoboken and visit an old 'Blue Eyes watering hole. I threw down a few Stoli's (I drink vodka during the warm months before switching to bourbon during the winter) and yapped it up with a few locals. I even asked a few what they thought of Turdue. Most just looked at me and replied "who?". That banal subject was quickly rotated to K. Iriving and their impressions. Most said he was a stud and he was IU's to lose. Feeling good about that response, made me buy a round for the bar ($187) and I threw down a few more for good measure. Losing track of time & yucking up with the local Joey Bag 'O Donuts almost made me miss the purpose of my trip. I was to meet up with Crean and co at an Elizabeth eatery an hour or so before heading over to Irving's home. When I arrived, Tom was noticeably irritated. I asked McLeod why and he said Tom had not been able to find a suitable tannery. Understand, Tom feels his tan is his armor. Without it and he feels vulnerable and weak. I told him he looked fine and immediately he asked me if I had been drinking. I said "sure, who doesn't at lunch?". He became even more annoyed and told me to keep my mouth shut at the Irving's home. He didn't need some half-in-the-bag FOP screwing up a chance with a prized recruit. Speaking of "prized" recruits, I asked the staff about David Williams. In unison, they said he would never set foot on Assembly Hall in an IU uniform. By their tone, I knew not to pursue the topic further. So we head over to Kyrie's home. Nothing special but nothing too 'hood either. We went in the house for introductions and I greeted Kyrie by slurring out "hi Kyle". I just double bogeyed the first hole. Crean shot me a look as if to say "STFU". More introductions were made. It was like a scene out of "Good Times" - I was waiting for 'Florida' to come out of the kitchen. Anyway, the introductions were standard except for a man that was simply called "Wes" sitting back in the corner with expensive bling and a brand new sweat suit. hmmmm. He looked like the uncle you didn't want to fuck with - so I didn't. Tom and co seemed to make a favorable impression with the Irvings and we were all invited to have an early supper with them. I wasn't hungry but I thought the Soul Food table would be worth a look see. I was seated at the "kids" table off to the side with Buckley. They asked me if I'd like some Orange pop and said sure as long as it was diluted with Vodka. The Irvings don't drink. Dirty look #2 from Crean. But Tommy was very engaging and charismatic with the parents and Kyrie. Got along swimmingly. Similar priorities and education is very important to them. This is a slam-dunk I thought. So while I was gnawing on a spare rib, I inquired when a decision would be made? The Irvings said after the visit to IU and a few lose ends were to be tied up. "Loose ends?" Tom and I blurted at the same time. I cleared the last bit of collard greens from my throat and asked what did he mean? Tom told me he would handle this. At this point the "Wes" gentleman emerged from the shadows and said "ya know, LOOSE ENDS" and pulled out a wad of cash from his pocket. I looked at Tom and his face became even more pale. This was not good. Tom told Wes he and Indiana do not operate like that. He said that would be a shame because the other schools Kyrie was considering do. Tom looked at his staff and me and said "I think we need to go". I aksed if we can at least have some scrumptious pecan pie that Aunt Velveeta had made especially for us? Tom said no and said our business is done here. Wes told Tom to think it over and get back to them if he changed his mind. Tom told Wes that there would be no change of mind and that he decided right then and there IU would no longer be pursuing Kyrie. It was a shame but ultimately the right decision. I told Tom I admired his principaled approach and honesty. He told me to shut up and this was the last recruiting trip I would ever be on as long as he's the head coach. I thought "damn, he's a cranky SOB when you take away his tanning bulbs". So they dropped me off at my hotel and we parted ways. Edited by Unbiased, Sep 24 2009, 12:53 PM.

Bravo! For a minute there I thought the story was going in the direction that you had personally fucked up the visit for Tom because you went into a drunken rage. Ah well. This was still pretty good. On a side note, I noticed you are insinuating that WWW is involved with Duke and that Coach K is willing to pay players. Interesting. Edited by dreachon, Sep 24 2009, 01:37 PM.

Did you go back in, ask for a little cash for yourself? You could have offered to "Talk to Krispy" in the car on the way home. That had to be worth a little bit of money to them........... |

"I asked the staff about David Williams. In unison, they said he would never set foot on Assembly Hall in an IU uniform. By their tone, I knew not to pursue the topic further." If you could tell the story of how and why they offered Williams in the first place, it would be most appreciated. |
