Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

WEST LAFAYETTE — Big heads? Don't even go there. Purdue is 2-5, after all, and the upset victory over Ohio State will generate zero points Saturday against Illinois.

“How will we handle success?” coach Danny Hope said. “We don't have any option. We'd better handle it. We have to keep winning. Beating Ohio State added fuel to the fire. It fed our souls in a way. It's one of those wins you work and live for.”

And then, of course, move on from.

“We have two wins,” Hope said. “That's great. We hope to win Saturday. The players are still excited, and I hope it manifests itself this week in practice.”

The Boilers handled the frustration from losing five straight games. Keeping the proper mind-set, quarterback Joey Elliott said, won't be a problem vs. the 1-5 Illini.

“The coaches' whistles have done a great job of keeping us level-headed. We're the best we've been right now. Our defense is firing to the ball and giving the offense more opportunities.”

What does the victory mean to the program? For one thing, Purdue was named national team of the week by the Football Writers Association of America. For another, Hope could celebrate with recruits after the game.

“It's a positive booster,” Elliot said. “Everybody is more spirited. It shows when you do things right, good things happen.”

♦♦♦

Nobody in the Big Ten sacks quarterbacks better than junior defensive end Ryan Kerrigan, which is bad news for Illinois. Kerrigan leads the conference in sacks (5.0 in Big Ten play, 7.0 overall). The Illini are the league's worst team in protecting their quarterbacks, giving up 19 sacks.

Kerrigan earned national defensive player of the week honors for his Ohio State performance (nine tackles, four for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery).

Then there's defensive tackle Mike Neal, who continues to draw NFL scouts to Boiler practices and games. The 6-4, 302-pound senior consistently draws double teams, which is why his statistics aren't overwhelming. He had one tackle and half a sack against Ohio State. For the season it's 18 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Offenses have to game-plan for Kerrigan and Neal, which could add up to a huge Purdue advantage, although you won't hear that from Hope.

“Those are just numbers,” Hope said of Illinois' struggles. “They have a big, strong offensive line. We think we can pressure anybody's quarterback. We have some talent. It's just not all like Mike Neal and Ryan Kerrigan. If it were, we'd be the New England Patriots. We'll try to take advantage of any opportunities we might have.”

Opportunities for other Boilers could increase if Kerrigan also starts drawing double teams.

“If you try to double-team both guys, you run out of people to block everybody else,” Hope said. “Teams can double up whoever they choose because we have a plan to get somebody else loose. You can't double-team them all. They have to pick their poison.”

♦♦♦

Purdue's cradle-of-quarterbacks reputation has never had a better weekend. Elliott led Purdue over Ohio State, Drew Brees led the unbeaten New Orleans Saints over the previously unbeaten New York Giants, and Kyle Orton led the unbeaten Denver Broncos over San Diego.

Brees texted Elliott congratulations after the Boiler victory. Elliott responded with a good-luck text against the Giants.

“The system we have here is proved to work,” Elliott said. “I'm just glad my name is at the bottom of that list in small fine print.”

Added Hope: “Joey getting a text from Drew was special. Drew was always putting others last when he was here. He couldn't tell anybody yes. Now he's had to hire somebody to say yes for him.”

Elliott remains at the top of the Big Ten in passing yards (1,856), passing touchdowns (14) and total offense (2014 yards). Not bad for a fifth-year senior starting for the first time.

“Joey is a great quarterback and he's getting better,” Hope said.

♦♦♦

Struggling punter Chris Summer lost his job to Carson Wiggs against Ohio State, but the move isn't necessarily permanent.

“We'll give him an opportunity to compete in practice,” Hope said. “We didn't give up on Aaron Valentin when he fumbled some punts. We won't give up on Chris. We might employ a plan as far as which punter to use in certain situations.”

Summer averages 38.4 yards a punt for the season, but his net averages over his last three games were 34.2, 28.0 and 26.0. Wiggs averaged 42.3 yards on three punts against Ohio State. He earned Big Ten special team player of the week honors after kicking four field goals against the Buckeyes.

“I wouldn't say Chris is not our No. 1 punter right now,” Hope said. “He's not the most powerful guy. When he shanks one, it doesn't go as far as others. He has to hit it right, like a golf swing.”

This is a good point. We don't want to become complacent after what looks to be a quality win.

Plenty of football left to be played.

Football coaches tend to not be particularly articulate. I can live with that...if he wins.

He gets a free-pass for one year. If the team doesn't show significant improvement between now and September, he will be held accountable.

If they find a real coach, you may be right.

Otherwise, expect a close game, and expect Dough-mer apologists to be ecstatic if the Gomers pull out another close one.

That was with Tiller's late teams that had a knack for quitting in games.

Reminds me of Krispy.

Sure is a good thing basketball games are played more than once a week.
