Knight to lawyer: 'Send the check back'

Former Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight said Tuesday that he won't be accepting a $75,000 check from school alumni to settle a lawsuit Knight had filed against the school.

Knight, now working as an ESPN college basketball analyst, filed the lawsuit against the school claiming it didn't properly defend him when he was sued by a former assistant coach.

"The Indiana University administration recently made a public announcement on a very private issue that I was being sent a check for $75,000 from alumni donations to cover expenses I incurred as an employee at Indiana University," Knight said in a statement. "Indiana University has refused for nine years to take care of their obligation in this matter. I did not know until [Monday] that this check was sent to my attorney. Upon finding out about it, I immediately gave him instructions to send the check back.

"In all the years I coached at Indiana and elsewhere, I never accepted a thing from alumni and I don't intend to start now," Knight said in the statement. "This issue is with the university, not with the alumni."

Friday, The Associated Press reported that a letter signed by lawyers for the university and Knight said the payment offer from anonymous donors would reimburse the former coach for expenses from the lawsuit by former Knight assistant Ron Felling.

Knight settled with Felling in 2002 by paying him $25,000 and admitting that in 1999 he shoved Felling in anger after overhearing him criticize Knight's coaching and behavior.

Indiana fired Knight in 2000.

"It would be amazing what this university's legal office has spent over the past nine years avoiding this obligation as well as paying off all the broken athletic contracts they have made," Knight said in the statement.

So much for the Hall of Fame appearance...

Wow
“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves."

dick alert. dick alert.

it's ironic to see bob knight take what he thinks is the "moral high ground". the fact is that people here want to embrace him, but he can't help but be a dick, that's just who he is. what he's done here in the past has been great, but if he wants to be a dick, he can be one -- by himself -- with no one giving a fuck what he does.

Why would he take a check from the alumni?.........that makes no sense. Also, if the University actually owes him that money then everyone can forget about him showing up...........and I don't blame him at all. He is doing the right thing and won't be bribed by the alumni to momentarily forget about what the University has done(and apparently is still doing)to him. I applaud Knight for sticking to his guns.

the university OWES him that money? really. sounds more like he wants a suit to get settled, and he wants a public university to take money away from students and give it to him. and it's about morals. lmao.

It sounds like he incurred out of pocket expenses for a university lawsuit, and wants reimbursed by the university.........not alumni. If you are a teacher and a student's parents sue you, the school system pays for your lawyer and legal fees as long as you are part of the union. It sounds like Knight had a similar deal(he did teach atleast 1 class at IU). If that is the case, then the university owes him the money, not alumni...............what's wrong with IU taking responsibility?

As i and Trouble have mentioned, if he decides to turn his back on all the fans that supported him through all this mess and all of the fans wanting him to return for his HOF ceremony, then I am done with this guy.
If you really can't let it go, when everyone at IU at the time his firing happened, are gone then forget about it.

I am a fan of the University first and foremost, i am very aware of what Coach Knight has done and appreciate all of that but at what point do you say to hell with him?

Many of the former players are back supporting the program, so if Knight doesn't, I don't really think its that big of a deal. I know you guys love your history and are proud of it, but I really don't think Bob Knight being around matters a whole lot in the grand scheme of things, particularly the growth of the basketball program going forward, which I'm sure is more important to many of you.

couldn't agree more.

with bobby it's always been all about him. it's ironic how he always victimizes himself, when the real victims are the loyal supporters of IU. Has there been fault on both sides? sure. but it looks like one side is extending an olive branch.

what it comes down to me is what's for the glory of old IU, not what's for the glory of old Bob Knight. if you can't get over it, then go to Bob Knight University. oh wait, it doesn't exist.

I took this article differently than most of you.

"This issue is with the university, not with the alumni."

To me, it sounds like Knight is pissed that the fans tried to take care of what the IU administration should have, and then on top of it, the university publicly announced it so as to take credit for something that they failed to do. It's still a toss-up to me on whether he shows; I think Knight's making it pretty clear that he has anger towards the administration and not towards the fans, so it will be interesting to see which side wins out.

Exactly...................and yes, I wouldn't want to admit that you agree with me either. Most people get blasted when they do that.

IU extending an olive branch?...........yeah, if your friend of 30 years fired you and wouldn't pay you back 75 grand.........and then offers to have you come back for a party in your honor........but still refuses to pay you back........would you go?..........would you take the 75 grand if another mutual friend offered to give it to you?............I wouldn't, and apparently neither would Knight.

Yawnz,
I know what you are saying but regardless, the fans, who are the ultimate victims, tried to make things right for Knight so he can become a part of the university again. While turning it down, i can understand as he doesn't want their money but if he doesn't show to the ceremony then i am done with the guy.
As i mentioned, IU is who i root for not Bob Knight, and while Bob Knight made IU, it still doesn't do me any good to continue to back a person who wont even try to amend a relationship that was broken by people no longer associated w/ the university.
