very few coaches in IU history have ever been successful. here's my long drawn out conclusion on the matter: With the end of college football upon us (IU season is already over), I can’t help but feel a little bit of excitement, but I thought I’d give the season one last hurrah. By this time, just about every “IU Football Fan” (I use that term very lightly), is calling for Bill Lynch’s head. After a second straight season with under five wins, with many disappointing losses along the way, it’d be hard for just about any other coach to lame that sentiment — except for the head coach at IU. Let’s face it Hoosier fans, we’re not exactly dealing with the Holy Grail of college football, in the words of Tom Crean, “It’s Indiana”. With all the recent plight of the football team, it’d be hard to find reasons on why to hold on to Bill Lynch, but I’m going to give you three reasons to EXTEND Lynch’s contract. 1) He’s Cheap — It’s like the bargain brand potato chips at the grocery store; they may not taste as good as the name brands, but they get the job done. Bill Lynch is far and away the lowest paid coach in the Big Ten, in fact, if you compare his contract with coaches in the MAC, he’d fall somewhere in the middle. Given his salary, and what he’s done for the program (more on that later), don’t you think he’s gotten a little bit more bang for the buck when compared to someone like say, Rich Rodriguez (who makes more than ten times Lynch’s current contract)? 2) He’s loyal — Given what I said above, for Bill Lynch to not even demand a reasonable Big Ten coaching salary shows that he’s devoted to Indiana University. He wants the football team succeed, even if it means making significantly less than other teams in the Big Ten. Hoosier fans were in love with Coach Hep (for good reason), but ironically, Hoosier fans have a strong distrust of Coach Lynch, even though they are both men of the same fibers. Along with his loyalty, he’s just a plain good guy. He shines a good light on the university, and he’s committed to making us better. Doesn’t that sound like a coach who deserves a little bit better contract? 3) He’s getting better — Baby steps. Baby steps. Even though the record hasn’t improved since the 2007 season, you’d be hard-pressed to say the product on the field hasn’t. Bill Lynch is recruiting good in-state talent to the Hoosiers (see: Tandon Doss, Jerimy Finch, Chris Adkins, and Darius Willis; amongst others), when just a few years ago, the Hoosiers didn’t even have one player that could even make the roster of most Big Ten teams. We’re getting close, and the solid recruiting classes Lynch is bringing in are the reasons why. So let’s face it. He’s cheap, loyal, and improving; if I told you those were the characteristics of the new coaching candidate for IU just about everyone would implore Indiana University to hire this unnamed man — but the reality is that we already have that coach. Give him a chance, with time, he can make this program into something pretty good. Let’s face it, it’s Indiana. If our football team can win 6 or 7 games season, and make it to a marginal bowl game, we’ll all be satisfied, won’t we? Some seasons we might even see 10+ wins, and who knows, maybe another Rose Bowl is in the cards. If we don’t take measures to hang onto Lynch now, we’ll never know. Finally, if IU were to fire Lynch right now, not only would we have to pay out his current contract, we’d have to hire another candidate. For the money, do you think we could find anyone that’s worth hiring? Let’s not forget Hoosier fans that there is just one athletic fund, and the money you use on football you take away from basketball and soccer. And really IU fans, would you rather spend money on football or basketball; after all, “It’s Indiana.” |

He is cheap and loyal, but he's definitely not improving. We had 22 seniors on the team this year. That is a HUGE number. To not win 1 more game with that kind of senior leadership is totally unacceptable. Being closer in games than last year isn't the kind of improvement I look for in a team with 22 seniors. 2 years ago we were decimated by injuries. I actually think we would have won MORE games 2 years ago had we been as healthy as we were this year. You can easily make an argument that we regressed this year. The question I ask myself is this: If we fire Bill Lynch, will I worry that we just fired the guy that could have taken Indiana to the next level? Nope. I much rather toil in obscurity while trying to find the right coach for IU, than be complacent with a slightly better team while fully knowing we will never reach the level of success I hope to see one day. |

we were losing games by 50+ points last year, at least they were close this season. i am in total agreement with letting him take his contract to the end, at that time we can make a determination. no point on wasting athletic department funds on ANOTHER new coach, and paying out ANOTHER contract. |

We were closer this year, but with a better team and fewer injuries. That shows no improvement from the coaching staff. |

i'm not saying that lynch is doing a great job of coaching right now, i'm just saying that I don't see justification for firing him right now. |

If those are the new uniforms they're pretty ugly. Then again so is IU football. |

The thing you're forgetting is the cost of time. I believe the construction of facilities at the stadium cost approximately $55 million. It wasn't built to 'maintain'. It has the largest strength and conditioning facility at any University in the U.S. (25,000 Square Feet!!). The shock and awe of a place like that as a recruiting tool drops quickly as it looks outdated, and as someone that deals with technology, I would think you'd realize the time frame that that will occur. Bill Lynch also isn't 'improving' as Dreach pointed out. IU has had a lot better players come through here than what I saw on the field this past year. |
