  • Question: Do you use a straight or safety razor?
Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

Yesterday I went to the mall in St. Louis and there is a shaving store. They had a whole bunch of really nice straight razors and safety razors. If yer not sure what I'm talking about, here are some pics.

Not only do these razors give closer shaves, but with the rising cost of disposable blades (I currently use the Mach 3) I was thinking of making the switch to save some money. So does anyone here use either of these razors? Is it safe to get a straight razor if I have not been trained with it? Do you save a lot of money? Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have had a shave from a barber with a straight edge, and it was the closest shave I have ever had. It takes some nerve to let a relative stranger at your throat with a razor. However, I would never ever in a million years try it myself. I think if you can master it, the testosterone you will exude will keep chicks hanging around your door flinging their panties at you for the rest of time.

The safety razor is what I learned how to shave with. It is a good shave, minus the chicks flinging panties.

No can do on electric razors. I am a hairy monster and it's just not close enough.

Eel, how long would you say a blade lasts and how much do you spend in a week or month?

I would love a to get a straight razor, but I think good ones are up around $100 bucks or so aren't they? Then you have to master the leather strop and all that. So worth it.

I get about 100 bladesor $15 plus shipping. Each blade will last about a week. The first shave is best, and they get bad day 5-9. I would guess I use 5 blades a month. I have very coarse facial hair.

So your 100 blades lasts about 2 years? For maybe 20 bucks? Wow. Add in the ~50 investment in the razor and it seems well worth it.

I do not shave on weekends, so remember your mileage may vary. Get quality blades or you will cut the hell out of your face the first shave, and never ever ever shave against the grain. It has "styptic pencil" written all over it. If you think it might be time to change your blade, it is. Trust yourself and pitch the blade. You will need a disposable container for used razor blaeds also, especially if there are kids in the house. They hold about 100 blades or so, and cost more than the blades, but it is better than your kid getting ahold of one.

Thanks for the tips. Hadn't thought about the container. I actually have a beard and shave every other day as it is. Although if I purchased this, I may go babyface again.

My dad bought me a Gillette Fusion 5-blade razor for Christmas one time. It certainly cost a good amount of dollars and the disposable razors aren't cheap. But it is a great razor that gives you a good close shave. And the fifth razor is on the back and can get tough places like under the nose.
