As brought up in another thread, I'm not so sure I've seen the Big 10 have so many significant injuries in one season. Obviously the Turner/tOSU, Lucas/MSU injuries were fortunate enough to happen earlier in the season for their respective teams, but the Hummel injury probably qualifies as the most devastating in terms of the immediate future for Purdue, and not only in the B10, but really in the entire country. With as much as we've seen this year, it got me to thinking about some of the injuries that we've been through, and really in the history of entire NCAA's, especially at critical times during the season. Just off the top of my head, I can think of a few quick ones. Alan Henderson going down in '92, and Kenyon Martin getting injured in the 2000 NCAA Tourney. If not for Martin's injury, I firmly believed Cincinnati was a lock for the National Title. Not to mention a potential title for IU in '75 with the May injury. Although not as devastating as Hummel's injury, I've always wondered what the outcome would have looked like with a healthy DJ White and Killingsworth on the floor at the same time. Obviously there are a ton more, these are just the one's I immediately thought of. |

The Scott May one has to be up there. IU was looking at back to back undefeated National Championship seasons. That's pretty significant, plus the team was already in the Elite 8 I believe. |

“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves." "I’d take him to the ends of the earth — I’d want him playing for me.” - Bo Ryan on Robbie Hummel

May was hurt in 1975....not sure how we were looking at back to back undefeated national championships before we even won one. Sounds like IU homer talk. |

Knight says that the 1975 team was better than the 1976 team. |

I heard that from Knight and Dakich just mentioned it in one of his shows this past week, after Hummel got hurt. Dakich said we would have probably two more potential national titles if it weren't for May getting hurt in 1975 and Henderson getting hurt in 92. I forgot that the 92 team went undefeated in the B10 that year (18-0) and was ranked #1. Both teams were good and I remember watching May break his arm, it wasn't pretty. |

There were a few really good teams in 92-93, so it's not a given that IU would have won a title. Getting screwed over by the refs against Duke in the FF the year before, followed by the Henderson stomach punch were back to back disasters. It's not unrealistic to think that Knight could easily have 6 NCs......I wonder how people would have thought about his antics if that had happened. I believe IU was undefeated and lost to Kentucky by 2 points without May in 75. They would have steamrolled any opponent had May been healthy. Yes, Knight has said on countless occassions that the 75 team was his best team ever. The 76 team had some close calls on their way to an undefeated season. |

I believe IU had 2 wins against the fab five that year by 1 point each time. Henderson with a block at the end of one game....I think it was 77-76. The other game, Webber hit a meaningless 3 at the buzzer........I think it was 93-92. Anyway, go back and look at the offensive precision of those IU teams and tell me that anyone is even close to that level of play since Florida went back to back. Not that Florida was that efficient offensively, but as far as total team play. Edited by Evilempire, Feb 27 2010, 08:17 PM.
