I have not been able to see any of the games considering Im stationed outside of the US but when I look at the box scores and read the articles, it raises some minor concerns. Im not going to go through all my concerns because all of them can be debated forever. My question to all of you is this: When is enough, enough? Obviously, if we begin winning, there is no reason to answer this question. On the other hand, if we continue losing as badly as we do, is his hot recruiting going to be enough to keep him around? Lynch had some decent recruits, by our football program standards, and after this last year, we saw some of them decommit. I could see this happening and all this work he's put into a couple of GREAT recruiting classes would be vain. Im going to be able to begin watching IU basketball, on a regular basis, beginning in 2012 and I would like to think that the program would be a force to be reckoned with by then. Thoughts everyone? |

Hoosier Daddy?!

I say Crean has until the 2012-2013 season before termination should even be considered. If IU decides to fire him before all his talented recruits start coming in, it will just set the program back again. Wait until he gets some talent. |

First thought - Is Tom Crean a doctor now? ;) Second thought - If we win and there's no point to answering the question, then why not wait to ask it after the season? Third thought - I said 14-16 this year and watched as many IU fans predicted 17-20 wins. You simply can't look at this team objectively and expect that many wins. Fourth thought - If Lynch was getting recruiting classes 90% made up of players within the top 100 in the country, he'd still have a job. Better football recruiting for IU is NOT the same as better basketball recruiting for IU. Fifth thought - I feel like Crean has worked hard to improve this team and we are getting there little by little. I believe he deserves a chance to coach guys like Perea, Yogi, Zeller et al regardless of what happens this year. Sixth thought - If Crean can only win with top talent, fine. Cuz we have top talent coming in. So I'll look forward to winning with it. IU SHOULD be able to bring in top talent almost regardless of who is coach. So I want a coach who can work with top talent. There are coaches out there that get top talent and don't do as well as they should. I think we have to wait to see if that happens with Crean or not. Seventh thought - One thing I am LOVING about this team and program is the renewed commitment to academics, the community and NCAA compliance. I think that alone has bought Crean a bit more time considering where we were before he got here. Eighth thought - We don't have enough money to fire him from his monstrous contract anyways. I'm a HUGE fan of this statement. I think that a lot of the people up on their soapboxes are NOT alumnus of the university or don't have financial investment in it either. Look, I know there are fans of a school's team than just alumni, but I also realize that there are many more facets to the basketball program at IU than the performance on the court; and by all accounts IU had been utterly failing at all aspects up until the Crean tenure. Secondly, we gave him a big contract because we need someone who could 1) clean up the program, bring in good people, and start a new era of IU basketball (done) 2) re-affirm recruiting ties in the state of Indiana (appears to be done) and THEN FINALLY 3) being to place a winning product on the court. If anyone is even thinking about letting Crean go now you are utterly stupid in the midgrapes. First of all, Fred Glass is very happy with the job he has done on parts one and two. Second of all, donations have been at an all time high under Crean. Thirdly, it was known that this could be a pretty big rebuilding process (upwards of five years) and Crean was awarded a contract fitting for that time period. He hasn't even gone through one recruiting cycle (and realize that he started from nothing) so I don't really see how people can jump to conclusions this quickly. As I've said, he is doing an unbelievable job in all facets except for court performance, which I believe will come with time. Crean's class is the 2012 kids, once he brings them in if the team is still faltering, at that time you start to wonder about replacements. But in this era, where IU has tried and failed with so many coaches, you literally have no other choice but to give him a fair crack, and 2.5 seasons is nowhere close to fair. |

I don't know if this is clear enough. If you know the situation with the athletic department and Fred Glass, you know that termination isn't anywhere close to his vocabulary with the basketball program. Glass is going to be very, very patient on this one, as well he should be. So basically, what I'm saying is that termination will absolutely not happen, so there's really no point in even talking about it. |

Yep, gotta give him some time. Next year will be telling. With Zellar he'll at least have a capable big man, albeit a young one. BTW, some IU fans are really going to have to temper their expectations of Cody. Freshmen centers in the BT rarely excel right away. The class with Hulls, Elston, etc. will be juniors. That's when things should start to click. If I were an IU fan, I just want to see some players improve from year to year. You can't just look at wins and losses. The strength of schedule can change greatly from year to year. Are the players, and the team as a whole, playing up to their potential ? You can talk about talent level all day but the point is you have to get the most out of what you've got. That's the true measuring stick for a coach IMO. |

I really like what you said bob. I think we've seen a lot of individual improvement: Hulls is a lot better, Watford too, Verdell has gotten leaps and bounds better since coming to IU, I think Rivers has become a lot better of a player, and in the time he's had I think Roth has become better but just hasn't really had the chance to show it. What we haven't seen is the team improvement that I think some expected. As much individual growth as there has been, I think some people expected that to translate to exponential team growth, which just hasn't happened. For one, I think we took care of a lot of teams in the pre-season that we simply wouldn't have in previous two seasons (Lipscomb, Northeastern, or Loyola anybody?); and for two, we still have the same matchup problems that we had the previous two seasons (actually taber was the most talented big guy we've had the last three seasons) which makes our team unbalanced against teams with a big guy. It takes a large pool of EXPERIENCED talent to make up for being unbalanced. |

I don't see how anyone that knows anything about basketball can argue that the lack of a true, serviceable 5 greatly affects what Crean can do, on both ends of the court. |

I think you stated that wrong, but I completely agree if you mean that the lack of a five makes it very difficult to do much of anything against teams that have one. like i said before, it takes a very deep bench of experienced (key word) talent to make up for being as unbalanced as IU is. I don't care who your coach is. |

Tom Crean is the man. Next year we'll be leaps and bounds better. I just hope all of our commits stick with it. They're all friends with each other for the most part so hopefully that translates to wanting to start the dynasty back up. |
