Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

Both are free agents this coming year and both will attract huge dollars. Who do you think is going to get a bigger deal, and who would you rather sign?

Is this supposed to be a joke?
“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves."

Yes, and I'll take Albert Pujols 11 times out of 10.

When you consider their age, respective 2011 campaigns, and Pujols' injury woes this year, I think it's more than a fair question.

We are talking about which player we would sign to play baseball right....not a pie eating contest?

The body knows what fighters don't: how to protect itself. A neck can only twist so far. Twist it just a hair more and the body says, "Hey, I'll take it from here because you obviously don't know what you're doing... Lie down now, rest, and we'll talk about this when you regain your senses." It's called the knockout mechanism.

I know, right? You are apparently not very knowledgeable for asking this question.

I was expecting the trolling comments to come from ColtFan in this thread. You're in elite company!

I would say Cam is pretty knowledgeable on baseball and probably factored in the age and bad year thing.

So do I when I say that if we are talking from a strictly hypothetical who would you rather have. I would take Pujols. Pujols, by his standards is having a really bad year, and yet the only category that Fielder is substantially out preforming Pujols is RBI. Everything is is pretty darn close. And this is in Pujols worst year. I understand that he is older and his game is most likely going to decline, but even at 80% Pujols is going to give you similar batting numbers AND play a better first base and run the bases better and not strike out nearly as much. And I personally believe he has several good years left.
Now when you start bringing contracts into play that is when it gets interesting, but honestly I haven't paid attention enough to know what kind of money and over what period of time Fielder is gonna command.

Its a ridiculous question. Only 4 years difference in age. And I know Fielder is having a career year, but its not even going to be as good as Pujols' 162 game averages for his career. And Pujols is a better defensive player and a better person to have in the locker room. And he's a proven postseason hitter.

And its not like Pujols' injuries are of the longterm variety.

There isn't a hitter in baseball I'd take over Pujols.

Fielder has a decent lead in batting average (.303 to .279) and slugging (.567 to .531) and huge advantages in OBP (.418 to .345) and OPS (.985 to .876).

He also has a WAR of 4.2 compared to Albert's 3.4

Albert is arguably the best player of our generation, but it's not absurd to think his best years could be behind him. His batting average has went down 3 straight years, including a huge dip this year. Maybe it's just a fluke and his career averages will come back next year, but maybe that's a trend as well. Once players reach a certain age, career averages don't mean squat: see Derek Jeter.

On the contrary, Fielder is having a career year, although he hasn't exactly been a slouch either in the past. Maybe he's just hitting his stride and will continue to produce.

Personally, if they were both going to get 4-5 year deals, I'd take Pujols. However, if we're talking 7+ years, then I think I'd lean towards Fielder.

It's not the most ridiculous question in the world.

1) Prince Fielder will come cheaper than Pujols. Pujols is looking at 10 years, 275-300 mil. I think Fielder gets a shorter contract and worth less. Something like 8 years and 200 mil. Think about this. The Yankees have to pay Arod 30mil/year for SIX more years. Any team not the Yankees that signs Pujols can't afford to be caught in the same situation or their whole franchise will suffer greatly.

2) Fielder can go to the AL. If you are an AL team, Fielder becomes a DH and he becomes much more effective later in his career. I don't think there is any chance Pujols goes to the AL. He is a ridiculously good 1st basemen and enjoys playing the field.

The question isn't who is the better player. Albert Pujols is a phenom. He's the best player in baseball and one of the top 5 of all time. He is a far and away a better player than Fielder. But if you are any team besides the Yanks or Sawx, you think long and hard before giving him the kind of contract that he is worth.
