Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

You have one of the shortest players in NBA history going to coach a 7 foot center. I wonder how Bogues can teach post up moves, jump hooks, blocking out, etc.. that is required for a big man of Jurkin's size.

Maybe he will bring is some talented assistant coaches or something. Maybe it will be good, but this seems like Mutt and Jeff.

Here is the article posted on ITH about Bogues coaching Jurkin.

Bogues to coach Peter Jurkin at United Faith Christian
by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | September 19th, 2011

Peter Jurkin will have a new coach for his final high school season at United Faith Christian Academy: Tyrone Muggsy Bogues.

The Charlotte Observer is reporting that Shaun Wiseman has stepped down as the coach at UFCA and will be replaced by Bogues, who played 14 seasons in the NBA with the Washington Bullets, Charlotte Hornets, Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors.

The Observer’s report mentions Jurkin’s development as a primary reason for Bogues’ interest in taking the job:

Bogues was an assistant on Wiseman’s first state championship team at United Faith in 2009, which featured one of the players Bogues mentors and coaches, Ian Miller, now a sophomore point guard at Florida State. Bogues is likewise close to another current Falcon, 7-foot senior center Peter Jurkin, who has committed to Indiana.

“The reason I did this mainly was because of Peter’s situation,” Bogues said. “When I got a phone call from the school, I was kind of shocked. High school coaching wasn’t something I was looking for and I thought Shaun was doing a really good job. The time I spent with him, he had the program going in the right direction. I don’t know what all took place, but I want to make sure the guys continue to get the attention and development I think they should.”

Jurkin recently tweeted about working out with Bogues and getting a chance to work with a former NBA veteran should be a positive experience for the future IU big man.

Red Auerbach was 5'10". How in the hell could he coach being that short? The Celtics probably wish they had someone like Mark Eaton coaching them.

I don't know if you ever taken a look at many high school coaches, but if you are going to compare them to the players they are coaching I have to say I've never seen a 65 year old out of shape high school kid.

Anyway, Bogues was hired to be Peter Jurkin's personal coach. He was hired to be the head coach of a team.

And I'll have to say I may be short and occasionally stupid, but the aspects of blocking out, post up moves, and a jump hook aren't exactly rocket science.

It just seems odd that a 5'4" guy coaching a 7 footer. Seems sort of funny and hilarious if you ask me. But I was more intriqued about how he coaches him because of their big height issue, not saying he isn't capable of doing because he most likely is. It just strikes me as odd.

I just have a vision of Jurkin holding the ball up and Bogues trying to jump up to get it. Freaking hilarious.

Bogues likely knows more in his pinky about how a big man should play than Jurkin knows in his whole body.

Yep.......and playing in the post isn't all about height. The great post players often have to beat guys taller than them. They do it with position and fundamentals....things a coach can teach, no matter how tall he is.

He'll train him to have a 42inch vertical leap. Can you say intimidating?

Interesting note --

Bogues averaged a rebound every 11 minutes in the NBA; 6'7" Reggie Miller averaged one every 12 minutes.

This actually made me go to ITH's website, which rarely happens, and I saw an interesting Q&A with Hollowell.

"Who is the best player you’ve ever teamed up with?

“Ronnie Johnson.”
“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves."

"I’d take him to the ends of the earth — I’d want him playing for me.” - Bo Ryan on Robbie Hummel

You must have been quite enthralled with the website to make it all the way to the 4th page and read the entire interview. Good to know ITH has a new fan!
