This is the first I have heard about Creek. Sounds like he is in about the same place he was last year. Unless his recovery speeds up, I think Crean should consider redshirting him, IMO. That probably isn't going to happen. Here is what he had to say in his Q & A segment on Creek and about the losing streak last year. Yahoo! Sports: Q-and-A with Indiana coach Tom Crean Q: How is Maurice Creek coming along after last year’s season-ending knee injury? A: “He’s not 100 percent. He’s not ready to practice. He’s done some one-on-one in limited settings but it hasn’t been with his teammates, unless he’s sneaking in here late at night and doing that along with his shooting drills, which I don’t think he is. He’s smarter than that. We’re not in a rush with him. His rehabilitation has been fantastic. He’s getting stronger. Right now he’s doing things in controlled settings with managers and coaches. We haven’t put him into live action drills yet. There’s not a time period on that just yet. He was evaluated at length again [on Friday]. He’s definitely doing the right things. The mental part was the biggest hurdle for him last year, as far as overcoming that injury. As a coach I’m more concerned with that than the physical aspect, because we’re certainly not going to put him out there and ask him to do things that the doctors and trainers tell him he can’t do.” Q: You lost the final nine games of the 2010-11 season. What was the most frustrating aspect of that streak? A: “l look at those losses and say, “What’s the common denominator in those games?” That’s what we’re focused on more than anything. We’ve got to cut down our fouling in a big way. We averaged 22 fouls a game last season and finished last. Ohio State averaged 15 fouls a game and won the league. Right there, that statistic alone, you put a bright light on that, because that’s a big deal. You know injuries play into it and you know that not having enough scoring threats plays into it. But when the new year comes, you don’t focus on any of that. You just focus on what you can do to get better and what you can eliminate that has been getting you beat. It’s time for us to string some successes together, not just one here and there.” |

I do not see redshirting Creek as a legit option. |

He's got a LONG road back and this entire year will be spent simply getting back his legs. I wouldn't expect any sort of significant production from him at all this year. |

That whole Q&A was a good read. |

“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves." "I’d take him to the ends of the earth — I’d want him playing for me.” - Bo Ryan on Robbie Hummel

Hypothetically, if he's not going to play or contribute meaningfully this year, you redshirt him because it's what's best for him. No reason not too. Gives him another year to improve and get his legs back without wasting a year of eligibility. He can always graduate early if he wants and even do the one-year senior transfer thing if he so desires. At least we wouldn't just be wasting a year of eligibility for him for a couple minutes here or there at the end of the season. The scholarship situation is looking pretty loaded, but you never know when you have a transfer or a guy head to the draft that will leave a scholarship unused. Bottom line: I wouldn't waste a year of his eligibility if you're not truly going to use it. |

If you redshirt him yer lookin at nearly 3 full years of not playing competitive basketball. When he's healthy, he needs to play. It's the only way he can get back into game condition. Can't simulate that at practice. |

His problem now is that he hasn't even practiced at full speed, or even played in a pick-up game in almost in a year. I would say that, knowing that, his biggest problem is that he won't have his legs back. Last year, it looked like he tried to come back too early and it didn't work. He was ineffective, a step or two slow, didn't have his shot, and ended up getting hurt. I would rather have him redshirt and save the year of eligibility and at least have 2 full healthy seasons left than have a repeat performance. |
