http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/seattle-welfare-recipient-lives-million-dollar-home-161252749.html Does anyone out there really think that crap like this is a mere "exception"? |

No, I think 99% of all welfare recipients live in million+ dollar lake front homes. |

I will bet that million dollar home that you could find thousands, or tens of thousands of similar situations. |

I know I am preaching to the choir, but go compare the budgetary welfare increases in the last decade to the budgetary defense increases. There is planety of places in the budget to cut spending. Stopping 1 person in Seattle from getting welfare is not going to change anything. Stopping 10,000 will not either. The change needs to go much deeper. |

The fact that a news story was written about it BECAUSE of how absurd it is would lend support to the belief that, yes, this is an exception to the rule. |

Unrelated, but I enjoyed this from the comments section: " #$%$ PURE #$%$ while the rest of US work OUR #$%$ OFF TO KEEP WHAT WE HAVE! TIME FOR WELFARE REFORM. I DON'T CARE "WHAT" COLOR YOU ARE, WRONG IS WRONG! I am tired of these Welfare cheats getting away with it. The ONES that need it cant get it and we take care of the YOUNG ONES before the Seniors get ANYTHING. Seems to me we are taking from the Older and giving to the Young so they can sit home and Make ALL kind of Babies. Time to get "fingerprint ID". When you apply for Welfare your fingerprint is on file so when you go back with another Alias, your print is already on file SO NO 2nd and 3rd DIPPING. YOU ALL KNOW WHO YOU ARE." I hope the above commenter said this as he or she cashed a Social Security check. |

welfare fraud of this level is rampant....the fact is, most people don't get caught and the news media never catches wind of it. I could post hundreds of stories on here, and you still wouldn't agree, so whatever. How about the billions of dollars found every year in medicare/medicaid scams? There are plenty of people living large on this type of fraud, most of which will not get caught. |

Oh come on now that is just an absurd statement. I am sure there are a lot of people that outright abuse the system, but to say that "fraud to this level is rampant" is completely ridiculous. |

You keep saying "the fact is" followed by something without evidence. If you're going to claim something as a fact, at least provide a source. Not saying you're wrong, but as Wikipedia would say "[citation needed]". |

I don't think so hog...I think it is a very very easy system to abuse, and there are plenty of wealthy people who figured it out a long time ago. I believe that to think otherwise is ridiculous. |

I have held a job since I was 13 that required me to pay taxes. When I finally retire at 65 (probably more like 75), should I feel guilty about getting a social security check? Do you really consider that welfare? For some it may be welfare but for those of us who have worked and are forced to pay into the system our entire lives, it is definitely not. |

You shouldn't feel guilty. But I don't expect to get anything back from the SS payments I'll be making when I graduate. I just think it's ironic that he or she thinks the young are stealing from the old when this generation will likely pay into SS but never get anything back. |

My first thought was that it is an exception, but Aaron might be right if you look past the $1 million home and focus on the scenario. There's a lot of programs that look at income only regardless of assets. Combine this with individuals making nothing qualifying for more than those working at low-paying jobs, and the individuals that fit that criteria is an interesting mix. Personally, I try hard to avoid looking for friends and family that take advantage of the system, yet off the top of my head I know 6 that bragged to me about it. Out of those, all are not working by choice. |

I have 3 close family members, 4 neighbors, and 2 business associates that I know for a fact are living very well....multiple cars, nice home, vacations...etc, and all of them are doing so while taking liberally from the government dime....the further I look, the more I find it. I personally believe that ALL welfare should be handled at the local level where it would be obvious to the administrator that someone is gaming the system....they would recognize the address, or see them driving a Corvette one day....etc. Small local government works better at nearly everything, with the exception of national defense. |
