Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

First of all, this isn't meant to bash Jones, or anyone else on the team. Just some observations and some numbers, that for me, bring some things to light in the VJIII turning the ball over "controversy".

It's no secret that he has been prone to turn the ball over, at least in the past, but after going through his numbers THIS year, it really isn't about the number of turnovers, it's about when he turns it over.

Through 15 games this season, VJIII has a total of 44 turnovers, which obviously equals around 3 per game. The team has a total of 193 turnovers to this point, which total out to 12.8 per game, which lends to the fact that he essentially doesn't turn the ball over more than anyone else on the team, not to mention, he's scoring almost 11 points per game.

I'm convinced now that it's all about timing. Jones turns the ball over, or forces "things" in pressure situations. He tries to make things happen at crucial times; driving the lane into heavy traffic, putting up a forced shot, or just making bad passes (ask Zeller).

That all being said, he also has the ability to make shots when we need them, and has helped the team this year more than he has hurt them. Not only that, but I believe he is accepting his role (not having to score 25 ppg) more and more this season, and has really become a key piece to our offense.

Ultimately, I'm proud of Verdell and what he's meant to the team. As a senior that's been through some of the worst times at Indiana (losing ball games), he's hung in there and is finally tasting success.

I'm putting my woes to rest with VJIII, he's wound up on his feet in almost every game this year, and I think it will continue.

Good for him.

Your conclusion regarding those stats is not correct. Verdell leads the team in turnovers per game by 0.8 turnovers. He has 22.4% of the team's turnovers this year despite only accounting for 13.5% of the team's minutes.

But I do agree with you on the timing thing. His turnovers seem worse because of the timing, and it is because he tries to make things happen down the stretch. I don't mind him trying to score down the stretch of a game, but he needs to be smarter. If he has the ball with 7 seconds left on the shot clock I don't mind him trying to go one-on-one. Otherwise, I'd like to see us stay within our offense and try to get the best shot we can. Our team plays our best offense when we move the ball and take open shots. We play the worst when we try to play one-on-one basketball. In my mind, that's where Verdell's decision making needs to change. I don't mind him taking open mid-range jumpers or driving the lane WHEN IT'S THERE. That's his game. Not driving into 3 defenders.
