Don't have ESPN insider, but this what he put as the first takeaway from the IU/Michigan game. "1. Victor Oladipo is a dynamic weapon at both ends. His defense on the ball and his drives finishing at the rim give IU its only real athletic presence on the perimeter. His jumper, on the other hand, seems to have regressed and he has lost his confidence from the 3-point line. In IU's win over North Carolina State, he hit two 3s, but he looked very hesitant at times on Thursday night. IU cannot win without him on the floor, but his lack of shooting clogs the floor and stagnates the offense." Now let's look at the actual facts: 1. Victor Oladipo has never been a three point shooter. Not only did he NOT hit two three pointers against NC State (he was 0 of 1) -- which Gottleib said he did -- he has not had a single game this year where has hit two three pointers and only had one such game last year. In fact, after the NC State game he was two of nine from the three point line....since then he's hit 4 of 15. Regressed so badly that his poor three point percentage has actually went up. 2. 'he looked very hesitant at times'....he put up 10 shots in 24 minutes and other than Abell (who only played five minutes) put up more shots per minute than anyone. This is after two games where he put up 13 shots in each, a career high. Yet Gottleib says he's hesitant? 3. He's the only athletic perimeter player? Really? Somebody better tell Watford. and Jones. and when he gets back, Sheehey. He sure as hell must not have been watching Watford pop up from three, or when they came out to guard him, take them off the dribble and get his shot. Seriously, how does an ass clown like this not only get a job but keep it as well? |

ESPN is in a sad, sad state. After the early years of Dan Patrick and Keith Olberman, I would have never expected it (ESPN) to come to this. Even Karl Ravech can't prounce Oladipo. I mean, how sad is that? Gottlieb is an uninformed (self imposed) idiot, and I think everyone knows it. Such a promising future for an all sports program -- such a sad situation here and now. |

douggottlieb@espnradio.com someone should inform him from wiki if anyone hasnt looked or didnt know.... he went to Notre Dame first and then this happened...."Gottlieb's freshman year, he was charged with stealing credit cards from a roommate and fraudulently charging over $900 to those cards; Gottlieb has since stated that, after paying back the $900, he was allowed to leave Notre Dame under the guise of being homesick instead of being expelled." douchebaggery |

And his insistence that IU has to win on the road to prove anything is a strange one as well. IU is going to lose on the road. Know why? Cuz winning on the road is hard. In fact, the last 2 national champions both went 5-5 on the road the year they won the NC. IU doesn't have be some sort of dominant road team to prove anything, they just have to not get waxed every game.

For the Indiana Hoosiers, Thursday night marked another good home win over a ranked team, this time the Michigan Wolverines. Until they can snag more than a single Big Ten road win under Tom Crean, many -- including myself -- are going to doubt the championship viability of IU. Still, even a blind man can see that this Hoosiers team has turned the corner into relevancy again. Here are my five takeaways from the IU-Michigan game: 1. IU cannot win without him on the floor, but his lack of shooting clogs the floor and stagnates the offense. 2. Evan Smotrycz has really improved as a player for Michigan, but he simply could not guard Cody Zeller in the low post. Jordan Morgan, on the other hand, did an excellent job of fronting Zeller and using his size to "build a wall." Zeller, like all IU big men, seals off his defender in low post position when IU runs its ball screen motion -- a la Butler. Morgan was the only Michigan big man to do a solid job of not getting sealed. In order for Michigan to be more effective with its man-to-man defense (the Wolverines play much less 1-3-1 every season under John Beilein), it needs its big men to defend and rebound better, as well as get its wings to cover for teammates that step up as help defenders on drives and double-teams. 3. A huge momentum change in the game was when Michigan tied the score at 68 with three minutes left and Stu Douglass committed a really dumb foul, being overly aggressive on the ball defensively. Michigan did a very good job in the second half of making IU make shots and keeping the Hoosiers off the free throw line, but in the bonus -- all tied up after trailing by double figures -- Douglass clearly got too aggressive and it was a good call that killed Michigan's momentum. 4. IU still doesn't utilize Zeller enough. Indiana likes to run ball screen motion to open the lane for Zeller, but the Hoosiers do not have great post feeders and Zeller is not open often enough. Additionally, IU runs a ton of quick hitting sets like Michigan State (Crean is a former MSU assistant), but it seems to run most of its sets for jumpers and ball screens. Zeller might be more effective, or just get the ball more, off some cross-screen action from Matt Roth or Jordan Hulls. 5. Though much is made of Michigan's offense and the complexity of Beilein's system, Indiana did a good job of containing Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr. on ball screens and made them shoot a couple too many jumpers. (They combined for seven turnovers and a 2-of-12 3-point shooting performance -- and one of those was a banked-in 3 by Burke in the first half.) If you are going to beat Michigan, you must have a plan for how to contain those two in a two-man game, while also contesting the 3-point shooters around them. And the bonus: Something you might not know -- Matt Roth, who started for Crean in his first year at IU, has become a designated sniper off the bench. Roth has taken 27 shots all season, and 25 are 3s. It is never easy to go backwards in minutes and importance on a team, even when winning, but Roth seems to have bought into a pro-like "specialist" role. Edited by tkeena33, Jan 8 2012, 10:24 AM.
