Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

I think he would have gotten a nice pay hike compared to what Bruce was making. At least in the 2s.
An instant pay hike above what they had budgeted before? I dunno...
I would expect Illinois to shell out at least $2 million to get a high-level coach. Then again, I know Illinois is not in the greatest financial situation since they've fired all 3 major coaches in a single year.
Zook, Weber, and ????
Women's bball

Obviously nowhere near the scale of men's bball or football, but still. Found it interesting they went for all three at once.

And Illinois reportedly offered Smart $2.5 million

Surprised you know that, but I guess you don't live that far away from Chi-town. She couldn't have been making that much though, right?

Reasons Illinois Sucks:

1) the obvious
2) following a legend (ha)
3) high pressure despite having 0 championships
4) no practice facility to my knowledge
5) chicago recruits haven't really gone there lately, so you'd have to duke it out with established schools in that area anyways
6) your border states with decent basketball talent (notably Indiana, Michigan, and to an extent, Ohio) are locked down already
7) new athletic director
8) big ten competition

Wow. $2.5 would make him the 2nd or 3rd highest coach in the BIG. If Illinois is going to pay someone more than Crean, Painter or Ryan then they better get someone who can produce like those guys.

This isn't a big surprise. I'm sure better schools and better situations will come his way this off-season.

Smart's contract is going to be redone with VCU...rumored amount is that it will be in excess of $2 million per year.

Some other notes about the previous deal he had renogiated last year:

He has $10,000 for courtside attire.
If he were to have left by April 30th this year, either he or the school that hires him would owe VCU $800,000
If he left after April 30th, it would be $700,000.
Smart has deferred compensation of $180,000 that he would lose if he left before April 15th; before April 30th, it's $90,000.
Finally, if Smart leaves for another school, then the school hiring him would be obligated to schedule a home-and-home with VCU or pay a $250,000 buyout.

He either needs a new agent or he has no plans to leave anytime soon. That's a very VCU friendly contract.
“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves."

"I’d take him to the ends of the earth — I’d want him playing for me.” - Bo Ryan on Robbie Hummel

That was after last year. The new deal will put him over $2 million per year. By 2011-2 numbers, that puts him in the top ten of all D1 coaches and the only mid major to crack the field. I'd say if that he's okay with his agent at this point.

There are rumors that Brad Stevens could be going to Illinois. I didn't think he would leave Butler.

I have a buddy who lives in Central Illinois and the rumor on the radio down there is Stevens might be getting the same offer Smart got and if he does get that same offer he will take it.
