Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

I'm not quite sure I understand the love for Kerry Wood. Quality guy? Loyal to the Cubs? Sure. Great player? No. Never lived up to his full potential, even before injury. He was exciting in that he struck out a lot of guys, but that hardly made him a great pitcher. I'm just not sure I've ever cared that much for a middle of the road guy who was supposed to be great but never was.

He WAS great his first year, rookie of the year. Had Tommy John his second. How much potential do you want in one year?

10.3 Ks per 9, second all time to Randy Johnson. Also a major league record 16 stints on the disabled list. He had a fatal flaw in his throwing motion that kept putting him down.

At least twice he gave up significant pay increases to stay a Cub. His community work is well known in Chicago.

He epitomizes Chicago Cubs baseball to a T. Maybe you have to be a Cub fan to understand that.

I don't reserve my love only for players who were great. Do you?

Was his surgery that early in his career? Huh. Thought he had 3 or 4 healthy years before he went down for the first time. That's my bad. I think Tim made a good point though. Did Jeff Foster get a standing O and have people say what a sad day it was for the Pacers when he retired?

It's not that I only reserve those things for great players, but I just never recall having that kind of emotional attachment for a guy like that. I could be wrong though. Maybe I just can't think of one right now.

Cubs' bullpen received good news today with the announcement that Kerry Wood is set to retire after his next outing.
Classy.

He had a lot of promise but never was able to keep it together, injuries didn't help. The 20 K game was incredible........more than a lot of no hitters I've seen.
I wasn't even trying to be a smart ass. It was a factual statement as he's been absolutely awful this year.

Yea, I know how he's pitched. I kinda follow the team.

Factual statements can still be smartassish.

He's been a fan favorite in Chicago since day one......and VERY loyal to the organization and the city. The Cubs are going nowhere this year.... so I'm not too worried about the quality of the bullpen in comparison to the retirement of Kerry Wood.

He just came in for his final appearance as a Cub.
Hard to keep track of who all are Cubs fans with all the chatter going on in this thread!

See, that's me being a smart ass, kinda like your first remark.

Anyways, why did they decide to play him one more game if he's going to retire? I'm assuming that's just so the fans can acknowledge him one last time?

The fact that I started the thread could be a clue.

One batter. Strikeout. Retire. Long standing ovation.

When nobody has commented in a thread in a week, I always make sure to check who started the thread. Sorry, I'll try and not comment on your lovable losers without permission from now on!

Take it easy man...I just saw he was retiring and posted it. I wasn't intending on ruffling any feathers.

Not very good? Sorry, I couldn't resist.

He pitched with the inverted W pitching motion. There is a lot of documentation that it's not good for your arm/shoulder. He was electric when healthy though.

If it was a Braves player or your man crush you'd be having a major hissy. But it's always OK for you to say something negative, whether you're trying to be funny or not, and then apologize later. Your intent is irrelevant because you don't think about it before you post it.

It's sad to think about what he could have been if he wasn't plagued by injuries. I hope he has a great retirement. Maybe a coaching career will happen for him.

We're all biased....

I'm telling you though, I didn't post anything negative initially. If you took it that way, then you took it wrong. And if you don't want to believe me, then that's your prerogative.

So your post of "the Cubs' bullpen received good news today..." wasn't meant to cause a flame?

If you follow baseball at all, you know how Cubs fans feel about Kerry Wood. It's our prerogative to know you act like a douche from time to time. So I'm not really surprised
“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves."

Wood made $70,135,000.00 for 1380 innings of work.....thats $50,822.46 per inning.

The guy was good when healthy and even occasionally showed that he could be dominant. I can understand him being a crowd favorite and have zero problem with the Cubs fan liking him so much.

My question would be this: If Wood doesn't have the 20 strike out game early on and isn't judged on his potential, does his career last as long as it did? Does he ever make $70 million? Not many guys coming thru the late 90's ever made that kind of scratch especially considering all the injuries. Most would have been relaesed and forgotten about, Kerry was treated more than fair imo. If I were Wood, I'd consider myself very lucky and enjoy my retirement. I always liked Wood and wanted him to do well, I hope he has a good retirement. Retiring at 34 after have made $70 million.......DAMN thats gotta be nice.

He didn't pitch his entire career there so I didn't realize he was so revered, especially since he wasn't that good.

I don't know if you guys know this, but the Cubs have been mostly irrelevant the last decade so it's easy for a non Cub fan such as myself not to realize the mystique and lore associated with your beloved Kerry Wood.

How many times do you want me to say it? No, it wasn't. Looking back on it, I can see how it may have, but those weren't my intentions. If you don't believe me, then you kindly fuck off.

I can understand the fan favorite sentiment. I can't understand the "Kerry Wood was a good pitcher" sentiment. He had a pretty good rookie season but the only positive statistical category that he was even in the top 10 (in just the National League) was SO/9. He also had the 3rd worst (in the NL) BB/9...which pretty much cancels out the SO/9.

Had he not had a 20K game, he probably would be just another casualty of the game.

Excellent post, Bri.

Exactly why I didn't realize how much the fans love him.

Yeah, baseball-wise, he definitely hurt the cubs more than he helped them...especially when you consider how much he's been paid compared to his level of productivity.

But, in terms of being a fan-favorite, I completely understand. I've been a fan of many long-term mediocre players over the years.
