Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

"The "separate sovereigns" exception to double jeopardy arises from the dual nature of the American Federal-State system, one in which states are sovereigns with plenary power that have relinquished a number of enumerated powers to the Federal government. Double jeopardy attaches only to prosecutions for the same criminal act by the same sovereign, but as separate sovereigns, both the federal and state governments can bring separate prosecutions for the same act."

In the 1960s, some defendants who were found not guilty in a local court were later brought up on federal civil rights violations for their offenses to their victims. In this case, the intent was to keep local judges and juries from simply ignoring and not applying new federal laws. That, though, is a very different case than what occurred in the Zimmerman case....I don't see any laws that were ignored, the jury's decision was based on their interpretation of the laws.

So then it is possible to be tried twice for the same crime twice, as long as it's from a different sovereignty.

Learn something every day.

I will say this: the concept of the federal DOJ doing a full investigation on Martin's death as well as the thought that federal charges could be filed are both BS, IMO. The trial is done and there wasn't anything nefarious about how the trial went.
I've never paid much attention to the DOJ in the past, so I have no frame of reference, but this one under Holder is horrendous.
The DOJ is supposed to be like the refs in a game--you don't really think about them being there.

No, it would be a separate crime, like violating someones civil rights.

Edit: just saw Brum's post, and didn't know that was possible. WTF?

If the Feds thought it was a civil rights case, why not include that in the original charges and have the Feds prosecute? It amazes me that they are even doing it but setting up a snitch hotline is beyond ridiculous. They are sitting around hoping to get a call from a high school classmate that once heard Zimmerman tell an off-color joke? Wtf? This reeks badly....

This is a PR move and that is all. "look people don't riot we really do care" they know nothing will come from this at all.

The sad part is that none of them really give a shit about Trayvon Martin anyway.

"Liberal, shmiberal. That should be a new word. Shmiberal: one who is assumed liberal, just because he's a professional whiner in the newspaper. If you'll read the subtext for many of those old strips, you'll find the heart of an old-fashioned Libertarian. And I'd be a Libertarian, if they weren't all a bunch of tax-dodging professional whiners." - Berkeley Breathed

Sounds to me like they may be making some (appeasing) noise and hope this blows over. Not quite sure it will though -- I mean, public outcry got him arrested after the police let him walk out of jail in the first place.

I once rode in a police car with a friend of mine (a cop), and he went down main street here in town the wrong way down a one way street. I asked him WTF he was doing, and he laughed, raised his right hand, and said "but I am the law".

This all smells a bit odd to me.

I once rode in a police car too. Unfortunately, he was not a friend of mine.

Damn college parties....

Jesse Jackson trumps at least 3 Ted Nugents and an Anne coulter!

The body knows what fighters don't: how to protect itself. A neck can only twist so far. Twist it just a hair more and the body says, "Hey, I'll take it from here because you obviously don't know what you're doing... Lie down now, rest, and we'll talk about this when you regain your senses." It's called the knockout mechanism.

I was expecting this to announce he was on the case to investigate the Hispanic man beaten by a group of black men. :sarcasm:
