Not really sure what the point was with throwing at Harper. Hamels says he did it because he's "old school". Huh? There was no retaliation in order at that point, it was the bottom of the 1st with two outs. Apparently the rest of the Phillies staff didn't even know he was going to do it. Why put a guy on 1st for no reason whatsoever? What a dumbass. And then to go on national tv afterwards and admit you did it on purpose. Either way, Harper got his own retaliation when he stole home after the HBP. He should have thrown that classless bastard a kiss, and then when he got hit the next time, at least he may have deserved it. |

BTW, here's (Washington Manger) Mike Rizzo's comments after the game: "Players take care of themselves," Rizzo said after I called him this morning. "I’ve never seen a more classless, gutless chicken shit act in my 30 years in baseball." "Cole Hamels says he’s old school? He’s the polar opposite of old school. He’s fake tough. He thinks he’s going to intimidate us after hitting our 19-year rookie who’s eight games into the big leagues? He doesn’t know who he’s dealing with." Hamels got plunked later on, but I still can't figure out why this started in the first place. Edited by Jazen, May 8 2012, 03:40 PM.

I have no problem with the "welcome to the big leagues" plunking. But talking about it afterwards is the opposite of old school. Hit him and shut your mouth. |

I didn't understand it either. Because he's so young he needs to be broken into the league like they did in the old days? And who the fuck made Cole Hamels the MLB sheriff? |

I didn't understand the purpose of it either, however, if you are going to do it, I agree with cam; talking about it afterwards is the opposite of old school. It's just plain stupid to put a guy, rookie or not, on 1st base for absolutely no reason at all. Harper ultimately scored. As a seasoned MLB pitcher, I didn't see it as a "welcome to the Big Leagues plunk", I saw it as a "you're really fucking good and I'm not going to let you show me up", plunk. Can you imagine doing something so dumb, for no reason at all, and losing $400,000? I know that kind of cash means literally nothing to these guys, but still..why? It doesn't serve a purpose. It's more like a hazing. And Jaz, you just called me "cam". You are not forgiven. |

I just can't imagine the old school guys plunking someone because they were really young and really good. If so the old school way is a farce and makes you look like an asshole. Why would anyone like to emulate that? I agree, it seems a bit like hazing to me. However, hazing is an awful practice. In addition what if he would have missed his back and hit him in the eye socket or some place like that? You could not only end a kid's career, but ruin his opportunity to provide for his family. Absolute bush league, IMO. If he would have hit a homer and admired it while flipping his bat...absolutely hit his ass the next time because he deserves it, but that's not the case here. I've always enjoyed watching Hamels pitch, but I hope he throws out his shoulder the next time out. Fuck him, and fuck the Phillies. |

I agree, not to mention the Phillies fans that were heckling Werth after he broke his wrist in RF, especially after he gave them 3 great years and was always a class act in Philly. I'm not sure I understand that mentality. In reference to "old school", I can't remember rookie hitters getting hit merely because they are rookies, or are just plain talented, or both. I've seen guys get hit because they were mouthing off in the media, showed up a pitcher or a pitcher's teammate, the opposing team hit one of your guys first, or you were John Rocker talking about the opposing team's hometown. My dad used to tell me that if you hit a HR off of Bob Gibson, the next guy up was going to get beaned. Not sure if that's true or not, but I do know Gibson was intimidating, I remember very little about watching the guy. He was a scary dude. I realize it's a part of the game, and always has been. Don't know why, but it just is. What Hamels did last night served absolutely no purpose at all. |

Almost forgot about John Rocker....a very racist, and sometimes funny, hothead. |

Bitch move. This reminds me of people who foul Blake Griffin (And I do not like BG) hard because he's young and dunks all over their team. Since when is it okay to foul/hit someone hard because they're young and good? If you really wanted to assert your veteran dominance you'd strike them out, block their dunk attempt, etc. |

Agree with Boat, Jaz and Btown. The bad thing is that Harper by all accounts plays hard every game and I have yet to hear him say something stupid in the media. Love the fact that he stole home. If it was me after I slide into home I would have just eyed Hamels and gave him a shit eating grin and tipped my cap as if to say "hey thanks for putting me on base douchebag" |

At least IMO, this is the definition of old school. If you want to "hurt someone", do it in the context of the game. I remember Larry Bird would always laugh at the other team for putting a white guy on him, he would flat out tell the other team they had no chance, and he'd drop 40 on him. Nothing personal, just in the context of the game, and it was true. I have no idea how Shaq took it for all of those years without literally killing someone. |

Because he used to stick his off arm down the other players' throat while he dunked on them. I thought he was going to kill Dikembe Mutombo in the 2001 NBA Finals. |

“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves." "I’d take him to the ends of the earth — I’d want him playing for me.” - Bo Ryan on Robbie Hummel
