Agreed. All I heard about was how he had overtaken Phelps as the best swimmer in the world. I think he's been disappointing thus far. |

They just announced the splits of the relay and Phelps again had a faster split than Lochte. Agnel beat them both. |

Do you have a link for the splits by chance? FWIW, I think Missy Franklin would have beat them all. :P |

Having a really hard time finding the signal in some of those pictures. |

“He’s always been a guy — maybe to a fault — he would always try to do what I said. That seems like something simple in coaching, but those are the guys I hang my hat on. We’ve had some guys in our program, we had a couple guys that felt I had a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. And they were right — I do have a bias towards E’Twaun Moore. I like guys that go to class, that are academic All-Americans, that come early, that stay late, that love the game of basketball. I am biased towards those guys. And I’m biased towards Rob Hummel. But I’m also biased towards their habits, their work ethic, and how they carry themselves." "I’d take him to the ends of the earth — I’d want him playing for me.” - Bo Ryan on Robbie Hummel

You guys are talking about someone walking in and replacing the most dominant swimmer and olympic athlete of all time. It is an unfair to Lochte to wonder why he is not as dominant as Phelps was. That's like comparing 2005 Tiger woods win at the Masters to Bubba Watson's win this year, and then thinking less of Bubba because he does not win every tornament he enters by 10-20 strokes. Lochte may(or may not) be the best swimmer now, but it is a hell of a thing to say he has been disappointing. |

I've never heard anyone say they thought he'll be as dominant as Michael Phelps was. Like Dreach said, I think the speculation going in was that he's the best swimmer in the world today. Of course, everyone will get compared to MP going forward (which isn't fair). Regardless of that, and it's just my opinion, his performances have been disappointing compared to what I read about him coming in. Edited by obatskii, Aug 1 2012, 08:21 AM.

I think Bat said it right that we didn't expect him to BE Michael Phelps and win everything he enters. But there is a difference between not winning everything and being handed a half body length lead in the 100 and losing by a full body length. Not knowing anything about Lochte going into the Olympics, I'm questioning why any of the news outlets were making such a big deal out of him in the first place. Not only does it appear he's not the best swimmer in the world (which was the claim), I'm not even sure he's better than Phelps yet. I think we were either misled, or he is not performed up to par. |

Man one of the cyclists just started a half second to early and the contraption snapped his chain. Pretty cool. I didn't even know there was anything holding the bike in place. What a wicked punishment. |

Wait, you trusted the same media that last year said in college basketball there was UNC and then everyone else, that LSU would easily win the NC in football, and that Rory Mciilroy Jason Dufner Zack Johnson and Rickie Fowler were the next Tiger Woods? Yes there were expectations, but let him finish his olympics before you dismiss him. Of course the media pimped him. NBC paid double boatloads of cash for the rights, mostly for the prestige because they are not breaking even, but they do have to stuff the broadcast full of this kind of shit to increase viewership and try to keep the loss to reasonable levels. If networks covered the world series, super bowl, or NCAA BB championship the same way, there would be rioting in the streets. They can't even decide wether to cover the Olympics as an entertainment event or as a sporting event. Don't buy into that crap. I am sick of the athletes having to apologize for getting a silver medal. It is bullshit. |

You are right on everything you said. The problem is just that I don't follow swimming between Olympics. I don't listen to the media about mainstream American sports because I watch those sports. I form my own opinions. But when it comes to Olympic events there is really no other place to turn to find out info on these guys before the games. Lochte absolutely shouldn't have to apologize for anything. I'm not saying that at all. But I'm also fully willing to acknowledge that being handed a big lead with our "best" swimmer up and just 100m to go, I was disappointed when we ended with silver. I can't change that feeling. |
