Most government programs work with the fact that people will receive government benefits of varying amounts if they ate below anywhere from 125 to 185 percent the poverty level. Currently working at a $7.25 you will be at around 125% poverty level as a single person, so you are going to receive benefits. My suggestion is to raise the minimum wage to the point where those costs are getting shifted away from government and tied to ctual employment -- if it were at 150% poverty, which would be about a25% increase in the minimum wage, then the benefits received from the government would start dropping off. And don't assume that you would see a 25% in prices at these places, because you won't......wages are but a fraction of their expenses, so a 25% increase in wages is nowhere near a 25% increase in costs. The bottom line is government is supplementing the lack of wages that companies pay. In the end, we are already paying for those so called $6 Big Macs you were talking about, just not at the drive through window. Insted, it was coming right from your paycheck where you didn't even have a choice. |

So you are saying the minimum wage should be at approximately $9/hour? |

Wrong. Higher minimum wage, less government services needed to supplement those working minimum wage jobs. |

That's what 25% would amount to. |

As long as we are changing the world, can we also require restaurants to pay a living wage and eliminate tipping? It works in Japan. |

Do any of these calculations take into consideration the tax returns these singles/families get? Is that not considered income? |

Brum, haven't we shown now that government welfare isn't necessary for survival at current minimum wage? That defies your statement here. |

BTW, here is what you get with McDonald's lowest medical pan: up to $2,000 of medical coverage/year. Their best plan ($155 per month) caps benefits out at $10,000 but only $2,000 for anything outpatient. Any stay in a hospital and you might as well not have had insurance to begin with. Anyone who has had even a couple day stay in a hospital an tell you what the bills are. And God forbid you have to surgery. http://money.cnn.com/2010/10/05/news/companies/mini_meds_insurance_mcdonalds.fortune/index.htm |

I am 100% for that. IMO, bad service reflects on the restaurant, not just the server.....if the service is bad, I can take my service elsewhere. The restaurant hires their servers. |

So these people never get sick? Secondly, how many workers actually are able to get 40 hours at McDonald's? Edited by brumdog44, Jul 22 2013, 10:55 AM.

I ran the numbers on h and r's tax calculator for a single person earning $15,000 per year with nothing withheld and it came out with him owing $525, or $44 per month....so I believe it has been accounted for. |

When I looked at Oklahoma for minimum wage, they can pay as low as $2/hour, I assume for employees that receive tips. As I said previously, I am wholeheartedly in agreement with you on the tipping aspect. It seems to me that we invent things for servers to do to justify tips......you know, I don't need someone to top off my glass of water after I've taken a few sips. Put a damn pitcher on the table. |

I think you made a reasonable point about the relationship between minimum wage and government assistance. Have you wondered what will happen when investors lose their appetite for US government debt, and the Fed stops printing money? I think most people believe this will end badly, but don't know when and how bad it will get. I predict it will make the $7.25 vs 9$/hr minimum wage argument mute. |

yes, they get sick. If someone is more prone to illness, I suggest they use the extra money in the budget(s) I did to purchase a supplemental insurance plan. If their condition makes for more expensive insurance, they may want to look at increasing their hours on the 2nd job, or looking at another employer who offers a better insurance plan. And regarding "40 hours"....are you now suggesting that employers also need to pay their part time employees a high enough wage so that they may live off of it? In what world does anyone expect to live comfortably on their own working part time at McDonalds? I think you are taking this beyond extreme, to the point of absurdity. |
