Welcome to Our Hoosier Board!

Most of the posters here have been around for nearly a decade now. You'll find their knowledge and insight to be second to none. We have a really strong community and value everyone's opinions.

Feel free to jump into any thread and voice your opinion with conviction. We love heated debates and even some fanbase ribbing from time to time. We pride ourselves on the lack of moderation needed to make this board successful.

Please remember that we have been around many years and have an astute ability to tell the difference between an immature, childish, trash-talking troll and a passionate fan voicing his or her opinion. It is at the discretion of Jazen and myself whether any moderating actions should be taken at any given time. It's a very, very rare thing. In other words, no worries....you'll be fine!

Cheers,
sirbrianwilson

Seems like we could cut back some. Here's another link with similar numbers:

2nd place spends $145 billlion. If we spent $145 billion MORE than 2nd place (so $290 billion total), we would still cut our budget by more than half.

Maybe, but if I remember correctly he wasn't really a war hawk....I don't believe he had any problem with cutting spending across the board. The war hawk is Lars.

Yeah that's true. But I kinda assume he'd take the opposite position of us regardless

So what would you cut?

Benefits
Salaries
Technology
Cut forces even Lower

What effect would you have on the economy if you slashed the defense budget by 50%?? How many people would lose their job?

Keep in my after the sequester the defense budget has already been cut by over 10%
Nothing beats an Astronaut

Technology and overall forces.

We research, develop, and build $10 million solutions to $100 problems. We bloat procurement and development staffs to provide oversight on these huge contracts and projects. We build so much shelfware that never sees the light of day. When it does, it's so specialized it can't find a use in the real world. Or it's so damn expensive we don't want to risk it.

We maintain a global presence so we can reach out and touch any spot on the globe in minutes, which costs way more than the bases and active duty deployed soldiers. We have to continually train, provide benefits after they're done, and outfit them in the latest overpriced tech.

I don't consider myself a "war hawk."

Maker makes some good points. I'm willing to tolerate more military R&D than some because it helps provide more engineering and tech jobs, and there have been some significant peaceful benefits from military spending, e.g. the electronics industry.
