Had the rise in "awareness" of transgender issues not happened in the last couple years in the country, this bill would not exist. It's not a response to an incident that happened, or even a rise of incidents. It's based solely on fear and people being uncomfortable with the realities of co-existing with trans people. Without that, this bill wouldn't be proposed. You can say that this isn't about trans people, rather pervs in restrooms, but pervs have always existed. Trans people have also always existed, but they were more stigmatized. The timing of this is curious. And it's one that leads me to have a hard time thinking that this isn't about discrimination based on one's insecurities. |

This literally did not deal with what I posted. I stated that assaults by men in women's restrooms where they are not allowed to go absolutely occurs. And it occurs because it's not the law of their entry that keeps them from going in...I don't see someone who believes that it is morally okay to sexually assault someone isn't going to the morally say that it isn't morally okay to go into a bathroom that they aren't supposed to go into. My end question was the important one, IMO....European countries have largely co-ed public bathrooms yet have much smaller rates of sexual assaults. The United States has the highest rate of sexual assault in the world.....the highest rate of sexual assault in Europe is in England, which is only fifth. In terms of throwing shade, if you come in here and say that people are ideologically blind and that no one has common sense, I wouldn't expect to be greeted with sunshine and lollipops. |

There are still some issues that I have....I see both sides of the issue and there are some inherent problems that I do see regardless of the decision. Let's use this as an example: let's say that a student identifies themselves as transgender. While the allowing of a student to go into the bathroom they identify with, it does seem that by allowing the student to feel where they are more comfortable it has in turn been met with many more individuals dealing with being uncomfortable. And I don't think the line of 'get over the discomfort' is applicable. I'm all for places making acommadations when they can by designating one bathroom as unisex (quite a few places do so with a single toilet bathroom) -- and I know that it logistically can't be done everywhere -- and it would seem to be sensitive to the needs of transgender people while also being sensitive to those who are using the designated bathroom. But it has been brought to my attention that in most places that provided a bathroom designated for use by either sex does not legally prevent a transgender person from choosing to instead use the bathroom they feel they identify with. I don't think that is right. |

I'm in the "get over it" category. Sorry. People have shared restrooms with trans people forever and ever and it was never an issue. The law should (and will) be overturned and we should continue on with how we always have. There is no issue here. |

Then why aren't you saying that someone who is transgender should 'get over ' using the bathroom with people that have the same sexual organs as they have? I agree that the law is a lot about nothing and that we have been using bathrooms with transgender people and I think that it's a pretty unnecessary law. At the same time, laws like Philly and Portland that have been made in which -- which seem to be forward looking in the respect that they are looking to respect those who are transgender by looking to have a unisex bathroom in public buildings -- could be told that they are illegal despite doing what I consider to be sensitive to everyone. Identifying with a sexuality doesn't ,make someone actual be a member of the opposite sex. A male who is transgender is not going to be giving auto insurance rates for a female, be eligible for scholarships that are intended for women, etc. |

Because forcing trans people to do that puts them in danger. There are numerous documented instances of transphobic violence, including those in restrooms. |

I don't think I can convinced that a transgender woman going into a male restroom is less likely to be assaulted than a transgender women going into a women's restroom. |

Yer always going to offend someone, which is really why the law makes zero sense. The best situation for all parties involved is to allow people to go into the bathroom they feel is most appropriate. |

Recent developments that have made it more of a relevant situation. Biggest issue to me is that Philly and Portland laws -- IMO, good laws -- could possibly be struck down when they are in fact a very fair solution, IMO. |

I support unisex or family bathrooms myself. I have used coed bathrooms in South Africa that did not even have stall walls and after awhile it became a non event... the shock we register is because Americans are so friggin uptight. I like what Kroger posted on their unisex bathroom in Athens Georgia: We have a UNISEX bathroom because sometimes gender specific toilets put others into uncomfortable situations. And since we have a lot of friends coming to see us, we want provide a place for our friends who are: Dads with daughters Moms with sons Parents with disabled children Those in the LGBTQ community Adults with aging parents who may be mentally or physically disabled THANK YOU for helping us to provide a safe environment for EVERYONE! |

And I'd be a Libertarian, if they weren't all a bunch of tax-dodging professional whiners." - Berkeley Breathed Meat is Murder. Sweet, delicious murder. | |
