Don't forget this last paragraph of the article: "Overall opinions of him, not just his job performance ratings, are favorable in Indiana, with slightly more people saying they have a favorable opinion of him than an unfavorable one. His net favorability rating stands in sharp contrast to that of Mr. Trump and Hillary Clinton, who both have deeply unfavorable ratings nationally." |

yes, and he's more favorable than both Trump and Hillary......so by your measure I guess he would be better than them right? |

Yeah I'm done. If people actually want to defend Mike Pence knock yourselves out. |

LOL....you're the one that related his popularity as a measure of whether or not he was better than Hillary or Trump..... |

are you talking about the party that is running a corrupt inside dealing life-long politician who put our national security at risk by using her own private email server and then tried to cover it up by destroying all of the evidence? If so, then I agree |

I was asked if he'd be worse than Hillary or trump. I said hes a very conservative governor not even popular in his own very conservative state. You brought back stats that showed his approval rating was higher than I expected but he still ranks in the bottom third of all governors in terms of popularity. If he polls that low in already very red Indiana nationally is favorability would be much lower. I was answering a question. |

Big problem with the conclusion: Trump and Clinton are being rated by pretty much a split between democrats and republicans. Pence is a republican in a highly republican state, thus his favorable/unfavorable are tilted toward members of his own party. Take the Indiana presidential primary, for instance......almost twice as many republicans voting as democrats. If governor favorable ratings in their own state translated to presidential ratings, then I'd expect Charlie Baker and Jack Markell to be prominent national figures instead of hearing of them for the first time from the article. The bottom line is that a republican governor in a very red state (or democratic governor in a very blue state) is really not that favorable with a +9 within their own state. With a +9 favorability ratings, he was running neck and neck with his democratic opponent in Indiana. Once Pence stepped down, his replacement, Eric Holcomb, still is running a very tight race with his democratic opponent despite being a very big unknown in Indiana. While I would agree that Pence's favorability ratings are probably a little better than Trump or Clinton, he also hasn't faced the same scrutiny. I think probably the best rating isn't their ratings as governors, but on the ratings on them when they were announced. Unfortunately, vice presidential candidates rarely move the needle at all. But in terms of the reactions, both Pence and Kaine were lukewarm to voters. Here is Gallup information after they were picked. Pence and Kaine pretty much mirrored each other, both with more fair/poor reactions than good/excellent ones to their selections (Kaine was -14, Pence -8); no real effect on it changing people's votes (12% said they were more likely now to vote for Hillary with the Kaine pick, 9% said less likely, rest said no change or undecided; Pence was at 14 and 10%); whether they were qualified to be president was similar (Kaine +15, Pence +13). A good chunk of people surveyed 40%+ said they hadn't heard of either one before they were announced. I think the biggest effect is that Kaine seems to have locked up Virginia, while the pick of Pence didn't really cause any kind of significant movement in any state. Indiana was going for Trump before Pence. |

Brum, you should really consider making some Side cash in political analysis reporting. Probably would get in trouble being a public school employee and all, but I think you'd be great. |

Apples and oranges. Random samples of Indiana are from much more republican voters (Indiana is +7 republican on the Cook Partisan voting index). Random sample polls of Trump and Clinton are coming from a mixed sample, relatively 50/50. |
