By the time the thugs had finished with him, Calis Thorne was spitting blood. His knuckles were bloody from the fray, and his head was throbbing painfully. Staggering, he managed to trod warily out of town and down the road as far as he could go.

It did not end up being as far as he would have liked.

A small bridge caused him to stop and rest, seeking shelter beneath it's stone structure.

It had been another one of those days.

Touching his ribs with a shaking hand, he tried to figure out if anything in there was broken. It hurt, but no, didn't seem to be - OW.

Maybe there was a fracture. All right. He could manage.

Calis grimaced as he shifted his weight to pull off his shirt. It was a spring day, beautiful and only now chilling as the sun began to set. He let his thin cloak drop to his side, and he laboriously began to scrub himself down in the creek - throwing his now wet short and britches on the shore.

With that out of the way, he gingerly inspected his own face. His slender nose was broken, at a touch of an angle now. Thankfully he could still breathe through it, regardless of its bleeding. Upon further investigation, he seemed to have a nasty gash right in his hairline. The sand-colored hair now saturated with blood, dripping with water to his shoulders. It was only at the very most two inches long, and not horribly deep - but that would be the reason he was a touch wobbly now, he imagined.

He ached to the bone.

Once he felt cleaner, he pulled himself under the bridge and wrapped his cloak around him. After more effort, he managed to light some dry debris and leaves to have a tiny fire going. Hopefully that would speed the drying process. After mere moments of huddling close to the flames - he was asleep, and did not wake again until he felt the warmth of the sun.

And heard the clatter of a wagon and horse tromping over the bridge above his head.

Waking with a start, he almost thought he was back home - as he did sometimes. He was confused to not be among his brothers, in the dormitories of the College. But as it often did, the realization hit him, and his face turned cold and distant.

Calis dressed himself quickly and crept from beneath the bridge, once more making his way down the road and out of yet another town who did not appreciate of his background.

The College, you see, had been raided, and subsequently shut down. The students therein either Banished, as Calis was or... worse. Like his brothers had been. You cannot be a magicker these days without some punishment to thwart you, it seemed. For a long time the College of Ilranan had been a beacon of hope for all peoples, safeguarding those who had gifts from the Gods, teaching them control, and application, ways to do good with it...

But every school has their less then impressive - or more so, perhaps - student that ruins it for the rest of us. His name had been Antony Fobrian. He had assassinated the King's Son in a duel. And because he had used magic to do so, the land was in an uproar.

The only reason Calis Thorne had made it out alive was because his father was in the Military Guard. And even HE had disowned him.

Calis' footsteps were the only thing he heard for quite some time now - and he had been Banished from the great Province of Ilranan for only three months. The countryside was still raw with the hatred of his kindred kind, and he had passed two.... displays.... already.

He would have to be more careful upon entering this next village - he could see the smoke rising as the sun once again began to set on the horizon.

((I apologize if it is vague - please feel free to join me in town or on the road! YAys!))

Times where different now, since the death of the Kings son. Magic users became the bane of existance, however there was still those that had yet to decide if they were to hate magic users as well.

Arianna was one of those people, an orphan once long ago until the village doctar had taken her in off the street when she was barely five. Now the girl was now a young women, her messy curls as a child had smoothed and looked like red orange silk under the sun, her eyes glittering emeralds. With skills to treat the injured and sick, and her talent for making medicines had her traveling from many villages during the year, with barely a stop home.

Usually her travels were simple easy and meet with no problems. However tonight she was alone, no escorts this time and she had already been seen traveling by herself.

Which was now why the women was running, glad that she never wore a dress while traveling, clutching her leather satchel to her chest as she ran down the road. A sharp cry left her lips as she tripped, wincing in the process before scrambling to her feet, her dark cloak now full of dirt and dust but she continued running, well more like a limping run.

And that was what let the five banits catch up with her, she spun off the road into a near by tree and then was cornered. With the light dying and her ankle twisted she had no chance in the woods, so she did the only thing she could do...Scream into the dying light of the day.

Chuckles meet her scream before the bandits loud voices boomed into the night. Laughter and words mixed together as Arianna shook and clutched her bag and the tree bark behind her.

Calis Thorne walked through the night without halt. He was weary of walking and wanted nothing more then to stop... but the last town had been perfectly clear that he do not stop within sight of them.

Ignorant...

As he plodded down the road, a sound caught his ears - more like a noise. A clamor followed by running and a scream! From just up the road?

Breaking into a sprint, Calis tore down the road, hood flapping off of his head and cloak streaming behind him. His head still bore caked blood from yesterday, and his nose was still puffy and black and blue. His knuckles ached at the idea of getting into a fight... but what else could he do?

As he rounded the bend, he saw it. Five men cornering an unarmed woman. "Hey! Leave her alone!" He shouted, sandy brown hair flopping into his face and covering one shimmering grey eye.

One of the thugs laughed even harder and jerked his chin towards Calis - three others peeled off from the group and bore down on him.

Calis was hit a few times... But not before he got the opportunity to break one of their noses, dislocate a shoulder and slam the third into a tree. As he grabbed the shoulder of the man who laughed, the one whose nose he had broken gave him a shot to the ribs that sent him to his knees.

Oh no, this isn't good. Remain in control, remain in control... Calis tried to convince himself. He felt the power uncoiling within him and he felt it pulsating in his blood. It felt a live, and it felt needed and so raw...

One of the thugs said something unsavory, and two came to pummel him - but then they were sent back by a whipping tendril of darkness that sprouted from Calis' hand. They were flung into the woods, and the other three looked at him aghast.

"Lets get outta here, he's a blasted magicker!" One said
The other nodded emphatically and started to run. "I'll get the town guard!"

Calis chuckled, hunched over himself in pain. Lucky for me, that town already knows who I am and that I've already been sent away.

Once the thugs had gone, he pushed himself to his feet and looked over at the woman - careful not to step too close. "Are you all right, miss?" His voice was hoarse, and he tasted blood, but otherwise - meh, all in a day's work.

Arianna had closed her eyes tears threatening to gather as silence meet her scream, and then she heard them, pounding steps and a tall male coming up the bend. She couldn't stop herself from falling to the ground, her legs no longer able to hold her weight.

She closed her eyes and then felt the stirrings of something on the air, she opened her eyes to see magic coming from her saviour. She bite her lip and watched as all the male did was knock the other away instead of killing him. The grip on the tree was still there and her knuckles were white with how hard she was holding onto the bark.

Struggled to stand, holding onto the tree for balence and standing on one leg for she could already feel the swelling. Her voice when she answered was surprisingly naturally smooth and calm. "I'm alright, Sir." She answered him. She was then frowning slightly looking at his knuckles and face.

She lost the frown and a serious look came to her face, she was a healer first and for most, and there was an injured man; who happened to save her; standing before her. She moved toward him walking carefully, her hand lifted to touch his bruised face and she frowned even more. "A reward, for you sir. Lets get your injuries seen to." She lifted her bag to pull out a clean cloth and a canteen of water and pressed it into his hand so he could remove the blood from his face before she moved into the trees abit and soon red light filtered from the trees and the popping sound from kindling lifted into the air.

Arianna calmed her nerves before she set out the remedies and her tools around her. The glow of the fire causing her pale skin to glimmer.

((Hey i was thinking that Arianna had been abandoned because she had healing magic. Which explains why she has a talent for being a healer? But she doesn't know she has the magic, since its healing magic it barely registers to people without magic, thats she's using any. Her being an orphan from a small village would also explains why she was not at the college.))

Calis Thorne was surprised that the woman decided to approach. He eyed her with a cautious smile, and graciously accepted the cloth. He saw that she was limping - but she seemed to need a distraction more then anything so he did not mention it just yet. "Thank you..."

As she left to ready a fire and her supplies, he gently dabbed the blood off of his face, surprised at how much had accumulated during the night and this past day. He must really look a mess.

When he had it all cleared away, except for the slight angle of his nose, he had stunningly handsome, if angular features, and his sand-brown hair was finally out of his face and no longer in a nest about his head.

Calis slowly approached the woman and the fire, and took a seat nearby, patiently awaiting his turn. As she made things ready, he toyed with the now bloodied cloth she had given him and ventured to speak once more. "I ... cannot help but notice..." He started, glancing up at her just to see if she was listening. "...That you are not running and screaming from Me now."

His magic had been... controversial at the school, simply because of the unknown nature of it. SHadows and shadow wielding is a little traveled path on the road to mastery of magicka, so there were few to teach him properly. That is why most of it responds through stress or strong emotion. He has been able to harness some of its power, but ... well... lets just say Calis tended to get rather... emotional sometimes.

((I like it! WHen she starts to tend his wounds maybe he'll notice, but not say anything right away, more curious then anything! I like this so far :) ))

Arianna seemed to be murmuring to her self as she checked the little bottles of remedies, and looking the litte glass viles over as if checking for cracks. A slight tilt of her lips when the viles were considered perfect before she was looking up. Blinking for a moment at him, as if saying when did you sit down, before she tied her hair up with a leather tie.

Some long bangs fell on either side of her face, framing her aristrocartic features she moved toward him and tilted his face toward the light her fingers light as she touched his nose and winced before tilting his head gently another way to check on the small gash. She shook her head and muttered something under her breath before she turned to her things.

Arianna glanced back at him, when he finally spoke once more, she blinked her emerald eyes at him before shaking her head. It was if he kept stopping her train of thought and the blinking was her rearranging her thoughts once more. "I don't put much faith words that have yet to be proven." She grabbed a vile that was cream in colour, " I was taught to never let someone else decide for me how i should treat others."

Taking a small piece of bandage she smeared some of the remedy onto it before handing it to him. "I'm a healer first and foremost. Not a sheep to follow others. And..." she smiled ever so slightly and then shivered "you helped me."

With that she was in healer mode once more, "hold that to your nose, while i tend to the gash, the remedy will help the slight swelling and the heat from the fresh break go down." She was already grabbing another canteen and sitting on her knees, moving his hair and tilting his head into the light. "Doesn't look like it needs stitches, thats good." She was muttering to her self now, as she worked with smooth, quiet and gentle motions.

Ignoring her own injury for now as she tended to the ones on his face first.

Calis Thorne managed a smile and accepted the gauze with the stuff on it. He applied it to his nose, wincing only slightly at the pressure he added to it. It was... nice to see that some people were unaffected by the prejudices that had taken the country hostage.

When she approached him and started to examinethe wound on his head, Calis felt the barest of sensations from her fingertips. Imagining it was something she was applying to his wound, he ignored it for now. Otherwise, he was desperate to keep the conversation going and in good standing before some other zealots came by and changed the woman's mind. "My name is Calis, by the way. What is your name, My Lady?"

In school there had been more to his learning then magic and spells and control. He took all the customary courses as well - reading, writing, arithmetic and ettiquete to name a few. He had little occasion now a days to put them in use, but he found no harm in applying them here.

After a moment of holding the salve to his nose, he already felt the pain starting to ebb. He smiled again, trying to remain still so she could work. At first he was going to protest her assistance, seeing her limp - but he had to admit it felt really nice NOT to be beat up on for a change. The care of a healer was something he had not felt in some months, and it was comforting, if temporary.

"You are very gifted, this salve is already working wonders on whats left of my face." He chuckled, a tightness in his chest cutting off into a slight cough and a flinch. The jest harkened back to his university days and his smile began to falter.

Arianna's reply was slow to come for she was mumbling about which remedy to use but she answered after a moment of silence as she brushed off the last of the dirt and appiled the remedy, "Arianna." Her voice soft, even though there was a distracted note to it.

She looked down at him and blushed at his comment of being gifted, she shook her head and sat back when she was finished. Rubbing the remedy from her hand on a small black cloth.

She listened to his breathing for a minute, watching him in silence before she thought back to the fight and how he had bent over in pain after they had left.

"Are you having any pain with your rib bones?" She asked him, looking at her things and ruffling through them. She waited for a moment, before looking at him again, "Shirt off." Her tone was one of no nonsense, and no lies.

Arianna shifted off her ankle and put gauze in her hand with some of that onment that she had given him for his nose. "You can remove the guaze from your nose now by the way." She said, "wipe the excess off and then throw the guaze into the fire." Anna was back to grabbing stripes of bandages from her satchel.

Calis smiled as she gave him her name. Arianna. Lovely name. He watched her work, and tried to keep an eye on her ankle. She did not stress further that it was in pain, but she hadn't addressed it yet.

When she demanded that he remove his shirt, he hesitated. But after seeing the look in her eye, he started to unbutton and pull off the gray uniform shirt he always wore since he left. He flinched as he did so, now more fully conscious of the bruising and pain on his left side. As he removed his shirt, he turned to quickly fold it and drape it over a fallen branch. As he did so, She would see the brand on the back of his left shoulder. It was the outline of a scale and measures; on one side there was flame and it was outweighing the other empty side. It was to signify that magic wasn ot above the law, though they tried to be. Apparently. It was also a mockery of the crest of the College of Ilranen.

It was relatively fresh, too, but Calis had decided to ignore the dull throb. On his left side there was significant bruising.

He removed the excess salve from his nose and tossed the gauze into the fire. "...I'm sure it is not as bad as it looks, please don't trouble yourself..."

Her eyebrow raised at him and what he had said, before she moved closer to him, shifting really so her tools and medicines wouldn't end up on the ground. Her fingers where cool on his skin, as she brushed along his ribs. Murmuring a small sorry when she had to press on the bruised area.

Arianna frowned deeply when she came to the brand, the sides were slightly swollen and her cool fingers felt the heat as if it was just done. Shaking her head a little bit she decided to work on his ribs last. She cleaned her hands with some water, and since her fingers were cool she placed her palm over the brand.

As her hand rested on the inflamed area, she grabbed another vial and opened it. Removing her hand she cleaned the brand before putting the substance in the vial on it. Arianna spread it carefully, with gentle fingers before she was finished.

She was moving back to his ribs now, smearing the cream she had for his nose on his left side over his rib area. She turned and pulled a bowl out, and some flour.

She put flour into the bowl and then added water before mixing it to make a watery paste. She pulled a large square piece of bandage and dipped it in. Pressing it to his injured side before removing it slowly so that it took the shape of his side, she placed it close enough to the fire so that it could harden.

Turning she brushed the area off before wrapping a long bandage around his ribs. "This will be here until the flour paste dries. Then the bandage will offer support and a small amount of protection for your ribs. You can put your shirt back on for now." She explained as she moved away to put her things away and to toss the watery paste out, washing her hands once more and wipeing them on that black cloth before the black cloth was in the fire.

With that she returned to the fire and pulled up her trouser leg, and removed her boot. An angry redness making it self known and she winced, before she was begining to take care of her own ankle.

Calis watched her, marveling at the effectiveness of the salve as she deftly applied it. The tingle returned and he had a thought. And the more he thought about it, the more sense it made. Why else would she be travelling by herself out here? He kept his eye on her, but had nothing but a concerned smile on his face.

He did exactly as he was told and puled his shirt back on. Once he had carefully tucked it in, he turned his attention back to Arianna. "Do you need help? I don't know much about medicine, but I can take direction if you need an extra hand?" He approached, moving to sit beside her.

He watched her examine her ankle. He was also surprised she hadn't mentioned the brand. Or asked how he got so beat up - oh wait. His country hated magic users now, and he just used some right in front of her. He knew it had to be obvious. But that did nothing to sate his curiosity about the girl...

He had felt her do magic. Trace amounts, but it was there none the less. He wondered if she knew she was doing it? He had heard tales of people born with the gift and being unaware of it until certain awkward times. He smiled at her again, pushing his brown hair from his face, and hoping he didn't look too much of a mess.

Arianna could feel his body heat move closer to sit beside her and she looked up from her ankle to him. She smiled at him, "No, it's alright. Besides you should be resting and not moving around so much, its just a little sprain." She spoke quietly as she pulled the bandage to a medium tightness so that it could offer her some support before she was lowering the pant leg and leaving her boot off. She leaned back on her hands.

"Calis, really thanks for that. I usually have escorts, but this time i didn't and the bandits had seen me traveling alone." Arianna spoke after a few minutes of silence, before she was checking the bandage. Shaking her head slightly before sitting back again. She looked at him now, her emerald eyes catching the reflection of the flames in them.

Tucking her cloak around her before her emerald eyes were looking into the fire once more. Suddenly she was speaking again, "did a magic user really kill the kings son?" She asked him, her voice low a slight murmur but she wasnt looking at him.

Calis accepted it, and he sat back to relax as the fire crackled. After a minute, he heard her speak her thanks, and he offered her another smile with a care-free shrug. "I would hope any other traveller would have done the same to help you, Arianna." He hypothesized, then turning his gaze back to the fire.

Memories of the College of Ilranen dodged through his mind. He remembered the Autumn bonfires they used to have in the east Woods. He remembered his friends -Jeremy, Davies, Bryant... He still does not know what has become of them. He knew other students, better friends, saw them struck down before him by his father's own blade...

Calis quickly shunted those memories, glad that Arianna had interrupted his train of thought. Looking back up at her, he was silent. Did a magic user really kill the king's son?

Calis sighed, looking down at his hands. They were resting on his knees. All he had heard was that this Antony Fobrian fellow had bested the King's son in a duel with magic. He knew nothing else. So he looked back up at Arianna. "...That is what I have heard. That a magicker won a duel by use of magic..." He trailed off, shrugging helplessly. What else could he say?

As he felt the pain of recent memories start to flood back to his eyes, Calis looked back at the fire, and pushed his hair back behind his ears. His own father had come looking for him, and in order to get his son out alive (only to Banish him, mind you, and disown him) he cut down several of his son's best friends, who were only trying to protect Calis.

Worst day ever.

Arianna made a small noise from her throat as if in thought before the young woman yawned behind her slim fingers. She shifted to check the casting by the fire and nodded finding it dry. She turned to him, picking it up. "Shirt again." She murmured.

When he removed his shirt, she untied the bandages, and placed a clean patch of bandage on his skin then put the hard cast bandage above it. "Now, this can be removed at night, except for now because they are pretty fresh. I sugguest removing it and airing out your skin every once in a while for this will start to stink." She said as she reapplied the bandages over top of the casting.

"It will offer portection though during the day." To demonstraight she knocked on it gently to produce a slight loud sound before she finished with the bandages to hold them in place. Arianna moved back to her spot and looked at the night sky. Arianna settled by the fire and laid down. She looked at him, taking in his features now with the light from the fire before looking away slightly embaressed but she still smiled as if pleased with something.

"We should rest, the morning is not going to come any quicker if we stay awake." She said, grinning before curling up and tucking her satchel under her arm to protect it seemed to be a habbit she picked up.

"Good night Calis." She murmured softly, before she was out and into dreamland.

Calis did what he was told in silence. He was impressed with the fit of the mold that Arianna had made, and smiled to indicate as much. It was a bit restrictive, but it would help. He pulled his shirt back on and then his cloak about his shoulders as Arianna started to settle down for the night.

He caught her eyes for just a moment, and he too turned his eyes away with the slightest of smiled. She was lovely - and look at that, she wasn't a fanatic. How delightfully refreshing.

He settled down against the trunk of a wide tree, and soon he too was off to sleep. Not before murmuring his own 'good night' to the doctor.

As he slept, he dreampt of the College of Ilranen. It began as they all do - calm, pleasant, happy memories of his college friends... And then the shouting. He remembered the soldiers bursting through the gates of the campus. He remembered hails of arrows and crossbow bolts flying down at them. He remembered Jeffrey falling to some, and Calis felt his friends' blood on his hands as others dragged him away and into the keep.

He remembered the battering ram. The explosion of spells, the clashes of steel and then he remembered his father grabbing his arm and pulling him by force of bl;ade from his only two surviving friends.

He remembered his father's dark words. "Calis, you are henceforth banished from the lands of Ilranen. Go where you must I care not. You are no longer my son, abomination."

He tossed and turned in his sleep, restless and trapped in memories.

The sounds of shifting, a restless shifting, woke her from her sleep. Arianna turned and then sat up moving over to Calis, she hestitated at first but then placed a cool tender hand on his forehead, her other hand resting on one of his arms, fingers gently touching his skin releasing her healing magic.

Not that she knew she was doing it as she started to whisper softly, "Shhh, its alright. Your not there any more, your not in that now dark place of saddness." Arianna paused, her fingers on his arm started to move. "Your by a warm fire, your here with me." She didn't know what else to say.

But her voice was a soft caress as if she was a mother soothing a child, her hand on his forehead moved to run gently through his hair, being mindful of his injuries, she might not have had anymore words but she just repeated her shhs' until he calmed down.

Calis felt the dream begin to slide away and somehow he was falling softly back into the bliss of a dark sleep. He stopped shifting and grimacing, his brow unfurrowed and the lines of pain receeded. His hair was a touch damp from the cold sweat he had sprung out into, but after almost simply just a minute, Calis was calm and looked quite restful.

Throughout the night he slept in the blissful darkness. And when the first touches of the morning's light hit his face, he opened his eyes and peered around - at first concerned about his whereabouts - then settling as memories from the previous day attended him.

He felt marvelous.

Arianna didn't know when she had fallen asleep, but she had. Her sleeping figure leaning on the tree near him, it actually looked a little painful. Her hand was still on his arm, fingers still touching his skin, and healing magic going in and out as she breathed.

Her other arm was tucked between her knees and the tree, almost looking as if she was squishing the limb between her and the tree. She hadn't stirred at all even as he moved. The sunlight glittered over her skin as she shifted slightly before settling once more against the tree.

((Its all good, mine was short too))

Calis Thorne saw the young woman sleeping beside him against the tree and smiled. He shifted his weight ever so slightly and reached up to brush some hair from her face - it must have tumbled into her eyes as she slept, she did not look all that comfortable.

He moved his hand from her forehead to her forearm, taking it off of his and gently placing it on her leg. Then he gently put his hand on her shoulder and gave it a brief squeeze. "Arianna? Arianna it is morning. I'm going to get you something to eat."

He released her shoulder and got to his feet. As he stepped beyond the warmth of the embers, he gently moved his hand out before him, scrawling something in the air - it was a simple finding spell, and as he cast some energy into it, the tiniest flicker of light began to lead him towards his prize - a few eggs staying unattended.

He offered a prayer-spell to the bird in thanks for the breakfast and in hopes of future nests, and stole away with the eggs back to Arianna, where he proceeded to stoke up the fire, and cook the few eggs on a very small, flat metal pan he had procured on his journeys.

He felt amazing. He had noticed it when he first awoke, but now he was certain he felt absolutely amazing. While he had gathered the eggs, he had removed the brace, and tested, and to his emense surprise, he did not feel the least bit of pain from his ribs. There was still some light bruisiong, but he bent and twisted and felt no stabs or rends of pain.

She really was quite gifted... but how to ask her about it?

Arianna made a small sound and then groaned as the light bothered her, before her eyes were blinking open. When she looked at him, she nodded sleepily before her body was shifting almost painfully.

She murmured a small ow, as the bones of her body popped back into place as she stretched. She checked her ankle and then stood and stretched once more, running a hand through her hair to detangle it and release it from the leather tie.

When he came back she watched as he moved about, and then she sat by the fire once more, she brushed her hair behind her ears as she sighed then drew in the smells of breakfest, her stomache rumbling in agreenment with what was being made.
