I think we live in a culture of conformity.

I keep trying to figure out why I don't usually fit in. It's because I noticed at a young age that most people are very same-like. I've observed how people follow trends, listen to the same music, wear the same clothing styles, hold the same political viewpoints, and rarely question society's way of doing things. It's just this deplorable lack of human individuality and creative expression. How could such a diverse species be so cognate?

Seems that everyone is trying to fit themselves into what society deems as trendy, instead of evincing their own style. There's nothing really wrong with that, but I wonder if that's how people really want to live their lives or if they feel they won't fit in if they deviate from the insistent pool of normality. I declared a long time ago that I wasn't going to do what everyone else was doing. I look around when I'm out and I just know how people are going to act. It's as if they're all following a doctrine.

I know it's human nature to want to fit in. If you were to see me, you would think I was normal. But when you get to know me on a deep personal level, you will realize that I'm further from normal than most people, and I'm not saying that to sound pretentious. So my question to all of you is this: Would you consider yourself trendy, popular, normal? Do you conform to society's trends and behaviors, or do you do your own thing? How do people perceive you? Tell your story and I will definitely give you a thumbs up, thanks.

Welllllll. I'd love it if I could say I was a normal popular kid, but I kinda wasn't?? Well let me tell you this, the question it's sorta hard to answer. :P In middle school I was pretty demure- I couldn't speak English fluently yet, and I suffered from mild social anxiety which caused me to isolate myself from other people, so I didn't really have any friends. It actually took me quite some time to convert and adapt to the cultural shift I experienced moving to the U.S from lebanon, which resulted in me being really shy, timid and awkward up until my late teens! :P

Pertaining to the whole conformism bit - it's only natural for people to conform in some ways. If we're talking dress codes (which I felt existed not only to prevent students from wearing inappropriate clothing, but also help prevent bullying that can happen to those who don't fit in by conforming to fashion trends), I never felt like I had to wear all the expensive popular/trendy brands. If I wasn't in a school that required uniforms, you'd probably see me in something cute and casual like a baseball tee, ripped skinny jeans, and maybe a choker necklace and a bracelet.

I also didn't really follow any of the social trends, even in high school. I've always been a rocker chick, never really cared too much about popular music. I've also been known to spend all day in my room studying and learning, opposed to playing games and going out partying with friends. I was always a bit different, but if I "conformed" to anything in particular it's because I like that particular thing, not because I feel pressured or something into it.

That's what I dislike about our generation. Everybody is just following the crowd, it's like individuality doesn't even exist anymore.

Well you're right, a lot of people conform against who they really are. I mean it's probably safe to say that EVERYONE conforms to at least some social norms.

But what is more annoying that conformists are people who intentionally find ways to be non-conforming and act like they're above conformists.

But since you said that you're naturally different, then I guess you win.

Wow I started this thread last January. Someone bumped it. It's still true for me. It's built into me. I can't help getting annoyed when I walk around my campus and see the guys with their flat bill hats say "YOOO a hahaha" and the ****ty girls acting more outgoing just for the sake of looking like they're outgoing.

I get that everyone conforms in some way or another. I guess for most people they do it just to fit in. They want to be part of something. I just wish it didn't bug me so much.

Zach everyone wants to be accepted. If someone told you that you need to dress differently, or do anything you don't want to do that has been adapted by the majority thee is no way you would not take kindly to it. It's not only schools that have dress codes, it's society too.

Everything is conformable so the question is a bit vague... like idk how to put this but even thoughts can be a form of conformity. Your probably talking about social conformity so like trying to fit into a mold constructed by society and all that. I'm like Winter in that I just like what I like really and I don't have a reason to change who I am for other people's sake.

I dress like a tomboy and people try to get me to wear more girly vibrant clothes but it's just not my thing. Guys clothes is looser, more flowing, and cut for comfort not accentuation. In my school people don't really care what you wear and if your like super shallow and materialstic people will actually dislike you.

Meh, people like the same things, it's not a problem unless people are being pushy or shoving it in other people's faces.

Subliminal, conformity impacts our lives on a level you haven't seen to notice. It's deeply ingrained and socialized into us.
