#Start disclaimer ~~ Prone to changes at my whim ~~ #End Senatus Populusque Austis et Socci Austis, a word used to detail the entire southern coastal region, is a cold, forested region. Filled with massive mountanous regions to the north and unforgivable dense woodlands to the south. Those inhospitable wastes are filled with mineral riches, rivers, cliffs, dense cold forests and the diverse, murderous creatures that inhabit those remote places. The senate seats primarily in the Capital of Ferra, a growing fortress metropolis settles on the edge of a wide river, marked by fleets of fishermen, river traders and even a handful of warships sailing across the wide river to and from the sea. Its ancient walls, dating back to the Imperial times, remind the people of more civilised, prosperous times. The city has grown, against all odds, since the imperial collapse, but slowly. Progress in Austis is steady, but slow. With armies that can only dream of the numbers the empire could bring to bear the legions where hard pressed to succeed in their duties. Fighting off orcish raids, policing the roads, guarding trade, the endless requests for aid of the senate's allies... A legionaries work was never done. Progress is made every year, but slower then most would wish for and at higher cost. The cities combined under the senate are almost all citizen cities, walled off, orderly, protected by stone and garrison. These the senate declares to be so called beacons of culture and learning, the centers of its nation. Many flock behind their walls for security, employment, education, sanitation... These cities often have ancient Imperial roots and their maintenance is difficult, but managable. The aquaducts, wells and ancient sewers are known as the hallmark of Imperial civilisation, but these are only truly prevelant in the older cities. Newer settlements build since often lack the means and funds to construct such massive works. Yet, construction and maintenance of them, atleast the knowledge to do so, has not yet been forgotten. Ancient Imperial roads, even older forests, legionary forts turned castle, Stronghold mansions keeping watch over vast fields of grain and husbandry, aging Imperial cities with thick walls fighting off the cold southern winds, wolves and more terrifying creatures stalking the edges of civilisation, the sight of a lone legionair standing watch across the border, Republican ships departing the ports of Ferra only to return with wealth of faraway lands, such are the hallmarks of life in the lands governed by the senate. ~~History~~ The Imperial colonies of Minernias were established after the legion's pushed back score after score of orcish horde and barbarian human settlement in the south. Whenever victory was gained, the enemy returned merely years later, so permenant colonies where required to pacify the region proper. Those permanent colonies, established by veterans of the legion where intrensicly loyal and centers of Tezzaria culture and power. Legions in the region where nearly continously deployed to keep the orcish population low, force more "barbarians" to join the empire and other duties that would befal an army in such an inhospitable place. During the collapse, the Military colonies across Minernias were in perpetual choas, fighting off rebellions, disease and orcs and other fae that crawled out from the holes in which the empire had chased them. Many cities where lost to the empire quickly, often in independance, others in plague or war. With the influence of the empire ever fading, the strongest and largest of the colonies, Ferra, used its influence and strategic location of trade and supply to broker alliances and wage short, succesful wars of reconquest in the name of the empire. It carved out an area in which it could keep order and kept it as everything else collapsed around it. A beacon of power, culture and hope, if one is to believe the historians. After years with no communication to the empire itself, Ferra and its allies created its own senate, in abscence of word of the imperial throne. Decades more passed and the lands around Ferra stabilised somewhat. Yet without bountiful trade, maintaining proper supply of food and other neccesary supplies, was difficult at best. Whenever communication with what remained of the empire was possible, no help could be granted. Loyalty faded and in the end, SPQA declared that it considered itself the legal succesor, not of the empire, but of the old republic. Harsh words where used to describe the empire and its political tendencies for corruption and Failure. Communication with the empire became colder and even more distant as a result, at no large cost to the SPQA or the Imperial Remenant as trade had been minimal and the distance was too great for conflict. ~~ ~~ Edited by pax_romana, Jan 14 2016, 04:53 AM.

+++ Culture +++ +++ Military +++ ++ Legions ++ The majority of the defensive and offensive power is centered around the "legions", military formations centered around 4000, 5000 Legionairies strong. These forces are defined as a volunteer military with fixed rates of pay added with other benifits, such as a pension. A military pension can be aquired if one completes a full term of 8 years, which can be doubled if one performes another 8 years of service. A citizen who serves a term is called a "legionair" and will serve mostly as heavy infantry or cavalry, considered the most important branches of the legions. Military service in the legion must be completed to either achieve voting or citizenship rights. Per term, one of these rights can be aquired. Citizenship is heriditary, so most people serving are already citizens under the senate and serve either for the work, the pension, the voting rights or combination of these. Non-citizens serving to aquire citizenship rights are said to be part of the Auxiliary portion of a legion, often archers, skirmishers or light-cavalry. On occation, auxiliary forces may be combined into specialised forces, such as Hermites Heavy cavalry, originating from one of the socii states. On occation, legions serving in long military campaigns will recieve extra benifits, such as land grants or extra pay. These extra grants are allways approved by the senate, leading officers, generals and consuls are forbidden to distribute war profits and lands on their own accord. ++ Limitanei ++ Citizens can be conscripted or called to volunteer to protect border settlements and forts for a temporary amount of time or in fixed terms of 4 years. These limitanei can not serve in offensive campaigns by law and serve to garrison forts, cities in danger and possibly to amass armies to fight or stave off invasions before the legions can be amassed. Their pay is much less and training along with equipment does not come close to that of the legion. To the senate, with the limit funds at its disposal, the Limitanei are a vital portion of the defense of the nation. Protecting borders and remote regions against all kinds of incursions, untill a legion can arrive to deal with the situation. Limitanei are often comprised of local land owners and townspeople, trained and prepared to defend their own lands and families. ++ Socii ++ The tribes and cities that allied themselves with the senate are few. Most have been incorporated into the Senate and it citizenship itself over the years, but some remain. These pay tribute in coin and soldiers to the Senate, in return for protection of the Legion and access to the markets and ports of the Senate. Most often, Socii forces act as Auxiliaries to the Legions. But on few occations the Socii can raise an army of their own, but it has not occurred in a long time. +++ Trade / Economy +++ +++ General Foreign politics +++ Edited by pax_romana, Jan 17 2016, 09:58 AM.

+++ The collegium magus +++ After the fall of the Empire, many blamed mages, magic and their power in society. In some regions they where hunted, killed or worse, elsewhere they where excommunicated, expelled... For a long time, especially during the first few decades since the collapse, the magi had it bad. Once the Austisian republic and senate began to properly form and exert power, the question of what to do with the mages was a rising concern. Without the magi, solving many issues troubling the land, such as certain plagues, diseases and hunting certain marauding creatures would become very difficult to do, so having magi at their disposal would aid them greatly. But even then the senate was scared of repeating the issues of the magi gaining power. As such, the senate declared that any magi living under the senate had two choices. Joining the Ordo Magus or otherwise colled the Collegium Magus was the primary choice, a vast guild centering all accepted form of magic and centered around a handful of guild houses and one major "collegium" Near the capital. This place teached magic in the first place, added by teaching the mages their sins and involvement with the collapse of the empire. Magi are made to understand that they have a duty to the senate and its people, to use their 'curse' to protect mankind. The other option is the eiectio, a dangerous procedure in which the magical essence of a person is sealed away, beyond his own ability to regain it. Such a procedure takes a long time and much preperation. To unlock his magical essence after such an eiectio ritual, would likely mean death, in theory it is possible, but the Ordo Magus knowns of no man that has survived the attempt. Most that join the Collegium end up joining one of many guilds, the primary of which are the Ordo Curatio and the Ordo Militia. Centered around healing and treating illness and otherwise in combating and understanding those otherworldy things that would cause harm and destruction to the people who live under the Senate. For those that join the Ordo Militia, the branch that aids the Senate with magical research and spells to combat forms of otherworldy creatures and mages. A handfull are attached to all Legions to aid them in advice and practical matters. Others travel the countryside to investigate and combat rumors of rogue magi, deamonic creature and other such ills. Those that join the Ordo Curatio spend the majority of their lives in the grand hospises of the cities, researching ills and attempting to cure and save lives along with their non-magically cursed counterparts, such as doctors and surgeons. As the Ordo Militia, some are allways attached to the Legions, to spot otherworldy ills and threats and if possible, combat them. Their are other, smaller guilds in the Collegium, but all pale in comparison to the Ordo Militia and the Ordo Curatio. |
