Major types of faeries:

  • Elves

Elves are tall, lithe, beautiful humanoids who resemble humans. They live an extremely long time and are incredibly in-tun with nature, with great magical ability in a few of them. The most powerful faeries are generally ascended Elves, though there have been other incredibly powerful members of the other races in the past to rival them. Elves are generally wise, but unstable and fickle, tending dangerously towards boredom and taking violent means to solve that problem, often going far outside of native lands or joining passing bands of elves as they go to maraud through the hapless countryside.

They are skilled craftsmen but lack the ability to focus long enough on one thing to preform more menial labor such as farming. They thus generally live in uncultivated land and trade their crafts for food and basic supplies, generally at very low cost, seeing as once a project is finished they are unlikely to see much value in it.

It is in such a way that elves have often crafted great masterpieces of silver and gold and exchanged them with a passing group of gnomes for a basket of bread and a bag of flour.

  • Pixie

Pixies are an incredibly numerous race of tiny winged humanoids with very childish demeanor, even the most wise among them isn't half as wise as the average elf. They have few needs, living in the trees and harvesting berries for food, and with the rest of their time they generally play pranks on whatever humanoid settlements are nearby to them or playing among themselves.

They are, however, numerous enough to exist in swarms, entire kingdoms existing in small copses of trees, not that there is much conflict among them. Were they less self regulated they would quickly become a worse problem than locust (And some groups of pixies quickly begin to act as such).

When called upon by the Lords of the Fae (Which they rarely are) it can be trusted that even should each tribe send even a paltry sum that they would exist as a practical miasma above the Realm's armies, tens of thousands of pixies flying in clouds and descending as such upon any enemy they encounter.

  • Troll

Trolls are an odd sort, less psychotic than Elves but much less social as well, generally living in solitude with agreed upon boundaries between each of them, only occasionally clashing titanically to determine whose territory goes where, and even then these conflicts are rarely personal. Trolls are made of of stone, generally speaking, having little by way of internal organs or circulatory system. Their joints are the closest they get to being vulnerable, and even those are covered in highly complex articulated plates.

Whenever a decision needs to be made among them collectively they generally take a vote between any troll that the decision might effect, using pixies residing within their territories as messengers between them, though they still answer unfailingly to the Lords of the Fae.

Trolls are fiercely territorial and do not tolerate major violations, not above eating other humanoids for nourishment.

  • Nymph

Nymphs are an odd sort, being a race of purely female humanoids who frequently kidnap or seduce males of other humanoid races into being breeding stock for them. Nymphs generally prefer aquatic foods and berries, living in settlements focused around lakes and coasts and spending much of their time in the water either fishing or bathing.

They are not a militaristic group and as a result generally live in areas with an abundance of other fae races, with Trolls and Elves tolerating them so long as they don't become inconvenient and Gnomes trading with them frequently for resources that the other produces that they are less equip to extract.

Even when called upon by the Fae Lords to produce troops for an army they will never send anyone who is not incredibly skilled in magic, and even then they are generally only used as scouts and foragers.

  • Gnomes

Gnomes live in and around foothills and forests, and are about half as tall as the average human. They are industrious and patient, unlike most of their fae brethren, but they are nonetheless fickle and more than willing to turn their expertise to more warlike means. Gnomes are the only of the Fae races that interact with goblins on a regular basis, seeing the merit in having friends among the subterranean race as the trade of raw metals for food and manufactured goods is quite a lucrative one.

Gnomes are, needless to say, not very good in combat, mostly useful for logistics purposes and strategic management; Most elven commanders keep a high ranked gnome with them to point out where their lack of attention to fine detail has left out a key detail.

  • Goblins

Goblins are strange creatures; They are not evil by nature, but they do tend more towards savagery than the very similar gnomes, not having the minds for intricate works of craftsmanship. Goblins live almost purely underground in tunnels, which they are constantly expanding to improve their standards of living and to take into account the expanding population. They normally subsist on underground flora and fauna, rarely clearing a large enough area to keep agriculture; They also trade the materials they extract from their constant subterranean expansions for food with the gnomes and elves of the surface.

Goblins are humanoid, but look as if somewhere in their recent ancestry they were crossbred with bats and lost the wings, their faces flat and their eyes wideset. When provoked they will rarely stop destroying things until they are sure that they will be safe for the near future, and when sent to war are enthusiastic, if not particularly skilled warriors, generally arming and armoring themselves with products of Gnomic industry.

Influential and important Fae

Mab

Mab, Queen of the Faeries, was once more powerful than she is. She was once the next best thing to a goddess in fact, and yet still might be so, but she no longer possesses the sort of transcendental power required for such an act. Like her Siblings, she commands a mere facet of Fae society, primarily Elves and Nymphs, with the odd nod of recognition from Gnomes and Trolls. She rules them from a great city on one of the many islands the Fey hold sway over, one of the only cities of the Fae that still remain since the ages of their Empire.

She is the only of the four of the great faeries that could be said to wield supreme executive power after her sister took to residing more in a higher plane.

Previous to the Faerie Empire's collapse she ruled over the Southern portion of the Empire in the greatest city the Elves ever possessed, on a great island that now serves as the last vestige of Faerie presence in the south, and even they have turned to primitive activities. Once known as Arctis Tor, the city served as her prison until recently, released by the wane of the Tezzarian Empire's power. Following her release she has taken her husband's throne, ruling in the North in the last vestige of Faerie power.

Mab is insane, but not much more than the average Elf could be called such, she's dangerous and sociopathic, but calm and always collected, her grace is one of the only reminders of the old Winter Elves, who are rare in the Contemporary Realm, having either fled there or turned to barbarism. She is willing to use every power in her inventory, including her perfect appearance all the way down to violent disembowelment, in order to get what she wants.

She's generally seen as a tall, extremely pale woman with blonde hair and ice blue eyes, her lips permanently tinted blue, bleach-white and light blue, antler like structures growing a few inches out of her head just above her pointed ears which look for all the world like formations of opaque ice.

Erlking

The Erlking is the former King of Wood Elves, in the North of the former Faerie Empire, the area which now is the only remaining vestige of Elven power. He too was imprisoned by the old Empire in the city that he commanded his people from, but it was much smaller than Mab's domain of Arctis Tor. It was one of the only cities that didn't fall to ruin and disorder in the wake of the Tezzarian Empire's invasion.

However, the Erlking has largely abdicated his throne in favor of taking to the underground, always having had more of an affinity with the Goblins and Trolls; Mab, his sister has taken his throne above ground. He is generally more bestial and intune with nature than Mab, though strangely he is also possesses far more temperance than her, brutal but not quite insane and holding the respect of all facets of Faerie society.

However, it shouldn't be said that he is any less willing to use whatever is in his power to get what he wants, he is just much more inclined to use the more peaceful methods in order to solve problems, and it is thus the result that while Goblins are far more savage and willing to stoop to lower levels, they are more organized and less prone to violence than Elves. The Erlking only has slightly less power than his wife and is a much better planner.

The Erlking is rarely seen without a heavy cloak, which hides an incredibly large frame. The Erlking is much more strong than any elf and is no less tall than the average elf, massive, 30 point antlers sprouting from his head making him absolutely unmistakable in appearance no matter where he goes.

Herne

Herne the Hunter is the third sibling and youngest brother of the four major Faerie Lords and Ladies, though he shares a father with Nivian rather than Erlking or Mab, only being the half-brother of the latter two. He has arguably the smallest role in any of their exploits; Simply being the leader of the Wild Hunt, which is a rare event to be sure. Herne can be expected at all times to be in some part of the great wildernesses that cover the Eastern parts of the continent, frequently being found in the far south where Faeries are quite rare now.

Unlike his brothers and sisters he has rarely held any position of power, preferring a life of adventure and excitement over anything so dull as life as a sovereign. Regardless, wherever he goes he commands the utmost respect for his role in Fae culture, regardless of the mixed feelings surrounding the outcome.

Herne is as bestial as his brother and as violently inclined as his eldest sister, but he holds quite a great deal more whimsy and cheerful naivete than any of his siblings. Unlike his eldest siblings he is just as inclined to find enjoyment in the company of others and in merriment as he is in violent exploits.

Herne is also far less recognizable than his elder siblings, being short for an Elf and of much softer appearance, features meaning that for those unfamiliar with faeries he could easily pass for a tall particularly handsome human.

Nivian

Nivian is the youngest of the Faerie Lords and Ladies and shares both parents with Herne, like him only being half related to Mab and the Erlking. She is far and away the most sane and passive of the lot of them, and is arguably the most powerful, certainly being the closest to a Deity the Faerie realms still have.

Nivian has a particular fondness for Gnomes and Nymphs, those being the least violent and most carefree of all Faeries. She prefers not to interact with her siblings, each such get-together making her dreadfully uncomfortable for a number of reasons. She keeps to herself mostly, watching the mortal world and occasionally imparting her wisdom on the subject of her attention, helping them to achieve whatever greatness they strive for.

She is also the only one of her siblings, interestingly, who hasn't broken free of her imprisonment, technically speaking, her soul being bound to the higher plane that once was the residence of their parents, only able to make herself known in the mortal realm through still pools of water or lakes; However, it is in this way that she was the only of her three siblings who was able to still impact the world at large in imprisonment, and it could be said that this ability is one of the reasons she is not as mad as the others.

Nivian generally appears in modest robes, hooded at all times. She has much softer features than her sister, brown hair and similar eyes giving her an appearance that would almost be called plain by Elven standards.

The Wild Hunt

The former favorite passtime of Nivian and Herne's father, whose name has faded out of history aside from within the memories of the Lords and Ladies like all the rest of Fae Deities. The Wild Hunt was once a great spectacle of awesome power being put to work, flying mounts and infernal hounds roaring across the sky and slaughtering or assimilating all who stood in its path, it was once the subject of terrifying truth among humanoid civilizations, now all but forgotten as a part of legend.

The rules of the Wild Hunt were simple, all fae who wished to participate were admitted in, though traditionally it was only Elves who ever made up a majority of the hunt's participants. The Hunt would then ride across the sky over a seemingly random stretch of land, destroying everything in its path except those who willingly joined it, who would be given a horse and a chance for glory as part of the spectacle.

A Wild Hunt has not occurred since the collapse of the Faerie Empire, and without the sort of titanic power that could be brought to bear by a god it seems as though it will never happen again, though Herne has inherited his father's infernal hounds and possesses his hunting horn, he could perhaps resurrect the tradition.

Fucking Governments, How Do They Work?

Fae governance is generally simply a case of the Fae Lords and Ladies holding the most power and ability to command than anyone else. Other than recognition that these powerful Fae are the ultimate rulers, most Faeries are allowed to rule themselves for the most part, aside from most Elves and Goblins, who are organized in a more Feudal society for the most part.

Pixies generally rule themselves in diminutive kingdoms that may simply rule over a particularly large grove, while Nymphs are almost entirely anarchic and Trolls self-govern in a sort of primitive democracy without leaders.
