Divinity - 4 Defense - 3 Law - 5 Magic - 10 Military - 5 Wealth - 3 History The history of the Magocracy begins with the feudal clans of the local Thri-Kreen in the region. They were a people who were not united in any way except culture and faith. For a long period before the Empire's arrival they were nothing more than (mostly) civilized clans who were in varying states of war or neutrality, until the Empire united them through overwhelming force. At first the locals chafed under the reign of the foreign empire, until they realized the advantages they could reap from being a part of it. For the rest of the Imperial occupation over the next three hundred years the Thri-Kreen began to learn, study, and develop in ways that used to be only the ambition of the previous clan lords. this eventually lead to creation of not only the University or the Arcanist Church, but also a new and more highly developed culture which came to be known as Kanttean. in the last periods before the Empire's fall a new ideology began to emerge among the now more educated magic users in the university. This Ideology, inspired by feudalism and experimentation with the newly discovered art of necromancy, as well as being closely intertwined with Kanttean ideals concerning magic users lead to it being named after the culture that spawned it. The new Kanttean ideology soon gained more and more traction; however it would never be able to come to fruition so long as the Empire ruled, and none were eager enough to incite rebellion. This continued until the Empire finally fell, and eventually retreated from the region in (x). Unfortunately the Kanttean people were not prepared, and even if they had been there would have been no way to unify whatever would-be feudal lords managed to come to power in the ensuing chaos. Luckily, the Kantteanists managed to secure the region in and around what had become the greatest city built during the Imperial age in the region, having also been the center of the Arcanist church and the University respectively. Now from the land that they hold the Magocracy sets its sights on unifying the rest of the Kanttean and Thri-Kreen peoples, in order to build a true nation for themselves for the first time in their history. Government The Government of the Magocracy is structured around the its various authorities, those namely being the State, the University, and the Church. The State is for the most part Feudal, however the structure is changed somewhat by the unique practices of the Kanttean Nobility. What other peoples might call dukes the Kantteans refer to as Sages, who are then all vassals of the Arch-Sage. Sages then appoint individuals as they see fit to hold jurisdiction over a province. These provincial governors then do the same for any other positions under themselves; however the Sages then have the power to change any appointments below them in rank. The University is the central force of representation for mages and center of academic and training based learning in the Magocracy. It exists primarily for research, education and training of those within its membership. Within the University are the divisions known as the colleges. with each College representing a known style, field, or school of magic. Each College is represented by that college's Prime Mage, who each act as the council and subordinate of the Arch-Mage of the University, who then is considered a direct vassal of the Arch-Sage. The Church is the body representing the national faith and oversees the practice, rituals, and projects in the name of the Arcanist faith. It is headed by the Auger, who presides over the various ranks of the members of the College of Divinity and is himself the direct vassal of the Arch-Sage. The ranks within the College of Divinity are often analogous of the ranks of the nobility from within the state; and indeed the ranking members of the College tend to find themselves as religious advisors to the similarly ranking noble within their jurisdiction. The University and the Arcanist Church occasionally have dispute over the mixed jurisdiction of the College of Divinity; However it is currently policy that while the Church has governing authority over its members, the University still has free access of Divine knowledge, as well as jurisdiction over its teaching. The oddest thing about the Kanttean system of Nobility is the fact that those of high rank are rare to die due to their Lich nature. Originating from early Thri-kreen experimentation with necromancy, it was found that the potential use of the Lich transformation to revolutionize the Feudal system as well as fix some of the perceived flaws therein, could lead to improvements in governance. Early political treatises indicate a belief that being able to keep the best of the nobility alive to rule indefinitely, rather than allowing less than capable inheritors to gain the power, was the the future of feudalism. This also later expanded into the idea of selecting an inheritor rather than simply having a system based on blood inheritance. Of the Liches within the nobility are any of the nobility of duke rank or higher as well as the Arch-Mage of the University and the Auger of the Church. Rules for the selection of candidates for the Lich transformation vary from the Nobility, to the University, to the church and even to the Arch-Sage himself. Species Thri-Kreen ![]() A species of Insectoid-humanoid, they are notable for being the predominate species in the Magocracy. Known for their insect qualities such as chitin, antenna, mandibles as well as their distinct four arms. Thri-Kreen actually have a similar lifespan as Humans, despite impressions based on other insectoid life. Individuals can be identified using a mixture of chitin coloration (ranging from red to green, or the more uncommon white to black), antenna markings, as well as the more familiar method of distinct facial features and proportions. Along with the four arms the Thri-Kreen also posses the remarkable ability to jump unusually far and high, mixed with the before mentioned arms making them agile and dexterous individuals. They also rear young and mate in a surprisingly regular fashion, with two or more individuals setting into mating pair/groups and rearing the young with the noticible lack of eating ones mate or many other such habits people might suspect they share. A notable exception might be to note they do lay their young as eggs, however only one, or at most groups of two to four. Awakened The Awakened are the result of an as of yet unknown magical phenomena which ultimately results in otherwise unintelligent constructs and corpses gaining sapience at creation. Of the Awakened there are two distinct categories, the Undead and the Constructs. Awakened Undead are found to mysteriously be brought into the unlife with an entirely new personality and consciousness unique to the one they had during their living life. All undead seem to be capable of Awakening. Awakened Constructs, not having the previous life the Undead did do not experience as much difficulty moving into their new existence, but are a even larger mystery. Both types are assumed to be caused by the same phenomenon, although that cannot be said for certain. All Awakaned are also, according to Kanttean Law, to be brought to the nearest Kanttean authority in a calm and helpful manner so that the Kanttean Government can see to the integration of the awakaned into either civilian or military life. Awakened who choose to join the military usually go on to become either Death Knights or Construct Paladins Religion Culture Kanttean Culture is rich with both the homegrown culture of the local people from before the empire, along with aspects taken from imperial culture as the locals adopted and adapted aspects of human civilization into their pre-existing culture. Thri-Kreen culture had always idealized Mages, Druids, Shamans, and the like because of a perception of these individuals as knowledgeable, wise, powerful, and skilled. This grew even more as imperial ideas, knowledge, and educational resources were within reach for the local Thri-Kreen. What was once a social class mostly made up of either natural casters or the individuals who could find a master now became opened to anybody with the will and time to dedicate to study. As the emerging Kanttean culture began to emerge from the local Thri-Kreen and imerial influences, the locals developed their own written language and began to note down their own findings and traditions, as well as mixing them with the knowledge they could garner from any sources they could through the Empire. Finally, in the University was founded in the region in order to better facilitate learning and to provide magical services to the populace. further feeding into the local idolization. The Church also has its roots in pre-imperial ideas and systems. The Local magic users who lead the society had long claimed to worship a Deity who was the source of their knowledge and traditions and who was associated with the birds of the world, with the notable exception of crows. As the education of the Thri-Kreen increased, along with the influence of the imperial faith, it became obvious for those who had been keeping the traditions alive that it was time to codify and note down the faith before it was left behind. The project was a success, leading to not only a increase in followers but also the creation of the Arcanist Church, which soon found itself intertwined with the University which had been formed not too many years prior.
