![]() Torathis is an Island kingdom lying in the northern sea. Torathian culture is a melding of the cultures of Tezzaria and the native Efieri tribes living on the island who lived under Tezzarian rule. There are a number of different factions working to bring order to the Geloran Isles. Stats Divinity - Defense - Law - Magic - Military - Wealth - Government and Politics Torathis is a feudal monarchy with heavy influence from the Church of Ralen. While the king is officially in charge of Torathis, it can sometimes be difficult to figure out who actually holds the power. Feudal Power Structure: King Oranis Geliand: King Oranis is the current king of Torathis. As the most recent in a line that originated from the marriage of the legendary Legate Torathine Gelius (Detailed in History), King Oranis is far from a humble man. Supremely arrogant despite having only ruled Torathis for three years, King Oranis is nonetheless a competent administrator. In military matters and those of diplomacy, however, he is more than a little lacking. King Oranis is a dull person, often overwhelmed by matters of state while simultaneously unschooled in conducting himself in state matters. As such, he often comes across as disinterested and disdainful of others - a trait that does little to endear him to the nobles of his own or other lands. King Oranis' court is in the city of Etulith, the capitol of Torathis. Sections are defined by regions to which the nobles are related. Duke Olivier Acorian: Duke Olivier is a cretin. There are no positive words that describe him. A greedy, unreserved sadist, Duke Olivier is difficult to compliment. Nonetheless, Dule Olivier and his children are the rightful holders of Miakith and the entire province of Mirados. Duke Olivier's province could be powerful and wealthy but is crippled by forty years of his incompetent and frequently incomprehensible leadership. The people have been chafing under Duke Olivier's leadership, and while his sons seem adequate leaders, none are great enough to undo the damage that he's already done to Mirados. Baron Lothan Hyll: Holder of castle Blackpond and ruler of the town of blackpond, Baron Lothan Hyll is additionally the seneschal of Torathis and spends most of his time at court in Etulith, managing the kingdom's financial and internal affairs. As right-hand to the king, Baron Lothan is generally known as loyal and intelligent, and it's accepted by most that he legitimately earned his position as seneschal. His dark and irreverent sense of humor wins him as many enemies as friends, but nobody would dispute his ability as an administrator. While he acts as seneschal in Etulith, castle Blackpond is left in the hands of his brother, Lord Ryan Hyll. Duchess Matilda Eliot: Duchess Matilda is a skilled negotiator and a good governor of her family's ancestral lands, the city of Leirien and the duchy by the same name.. Generally considered a benevolent person, Duchess Matilda frequently hosts feasts, fairs, and other celebrations of her family's achievements in her holding of Leirien. While her lands are well managed on her part and that of her advisors, Matilda doesn't do anything to dissuade the Kingdom's pirates - in fact, she frequently invites the more illustrious pirates to her celebrations. Count Ziriel Ibarien: Count Ziriel is the ruler of Torwien, a town known as the most crime-ridden scumhole in Torathis. While Ziriel is an intelligent and skilled strategist who could arguably be a better king than the actual king, he actually has more influence in other provinces of Torathis than he does in his own. As a result, Count Ziriel spends more time at the king's court than in Torwien. Lady Lilian Taillefer: Chancellor of the realm, Lady Lilian's family hold a small barony in the province of Leirien. Lady Lilian earned her position when the late Duke Walter Eliot rebelled against the crown and she was sent to negotiate peace as her father - Duke Walter's former chancellor - had died in the fighting. While she was unable to negotiate an agreement that wouldn't end in Duke Walter's execution, it wasn't a result of her superb negotiation but of the former king's hard-line beheading-based rebellion management policy. Baron Darien Bastiel: Marshal of the Realm, Baron Darien is an aggressive, stubborn old man with a great deal of experience in military matters. Baron Darien's family holds a small village near Vertwych, but are nontheless a prestigious military family who earned their title through great deeds in . As the man in charge of training Torathis' armies and commanding them when they're raised, Baron Darien holds a prestigious and powerful position in the kingdom. Baron Darien has lead armies in multiple battles against the other hostile inhabitants of the Geloran Isles. Religious Power Structure: High Priest Eugene Berrien: High Priest Eugene is a pious and insightful man, as far as the public eye is concerned. Nobody can deny, though, that the former High Priest's death was extremely fortunate for Eugene and coincided almost perfectly with his own rise in prominence through the ranks of the church's hierarchy and into the Grand Temple at Vertwych. His true piety aside, Eugene is a brutally efficient administrator who many believe has the gift of divination, given how much he knows about all the going-ons of Torathis. As head of the church of Ralen, Eugene has a tremendous amount of influence over the political, public, and spiritual lives of most of the denizens of Torathis. Grandmaster Richard Cobhurn: Grandmaster Richard the Ready of the Templar Order is known as one of the greatest warriors in Torathis. Loyal, pious, and brave, Grandmaster Richard leads the Templars from Vertwych: Guardians of the Church of Ralen and the most effective fighting force in Torathis. While he has a record of unquestioningly follow all of Eugene's orders, Grandmaster Richard is far from a fanatic. When left to his own devices, Grandmaster Richard prefers a softer touch, and would much rather convert someone than kill them. High Inquisitor Baldwin Carew: A short, red-haired man of native descent, High Inquisitor Baldwin is anything but a noble. Rising up from peasantry to a priest of Ralen, and then to an inquisitor under High Priest Eugene's careful watch, High Inquisitor Baldwin is anything but fond of the nobility. As the man in charge of keeping Torathis safe from cults dedicated to summoning demons or raising the dead, High Inquisitor Baldwin also takes it upon himself to protect Torathis from foreign spies and any other agents who may want to harm the kingdom. While he is a hard man who is wildly zealous to the Church of Ralen, High Inquisitor Baldwin tries his hardest to temper his zeal with Ralen's high ideals of mercy, justice, and courage. Provinces ![]() Yellow dots represent cities Red dots represent fortresses. Torath: Capitol: Etulith Governor: King Oranis Geliand Torath is the thriving heart of Torathis. The capitol city and trade centre of Torathis, the city of Etulith, is a shining example of the best of Torathis' culture: The city is built upon the bones of the old Tezzarian fort, where the Empire's occupational governor had ruled. The city has been vastly changed since those days, however. The old palace burned down and was rebuilt and the city has changed from a massive military fortress into a sprawling metropolis full of examples of Torathian art and culture. Additionally - some would say more importantly - Torath plays host to the Fortress of Vertwych, the seat of Ralen's church as well as the Templar order. Vertwych has influence comparable to the monarchy in most matters, and arguably more influence in the lives of individuals who fear for the fate of their souls. It certainly doesn't hurt that the Templars are the strongest fighting force in Torathis. Mirados: Capitol: Miakith Governor: Duke Olivier Acorian Mirados is a poor, crime-ridden province, even compared to the pirate haven of Leirien. A number of robber bands influential enough to be household names hold power throughout most of the province with a kind of mythology surrounding their criminal exploits. The only place that a common man or woman can hope to live happily is Castle Blackpond and the town surrounding it - which has become overpopulated precisely because of how much better Blackpond is for the common man than the rest of Mirados. Mirados' peasants are overtaxed and often the subjects of corrupt minor lords' and knights' abuses, and despite producing an abundance of food and other goods for the rest of Torathis, few people other than the nobles of Mirados actually profit from Mirados' labors. Leirien: Capitol: Leirien Governor: Duchess Matilda Eliot Leirien was formerly an independent petty kingdom ruled by the Eliots. Their island had never been fully tamed by the Tezzarian empire, and as a result the Efieri influence is strong in Leirien. Known for the Efieri pirates who plague trade routes to and from Torathis, Leirien is a land of untamed forests and untamed people. The port city of Torwien in the south is a hub of the pirates, and is known as well for its brothels and alcohol as it is for its brightly colored roofs. History The history of Torathis stretches back across the ages. The Efieri tribes have lived on the Geloran islands for as long as anyone remembers. Traditionally a tribal society, the Efieri tended to be fishers and farmers more than raiders, but that didn't stop them from holding off the Horned men of Gorok and the other strange threats that inhabit the islands, or from fighting fiercely when the Tezzarian legions arrived on their doorstep. While the many tribes of the Geloran Isles are typically referred to collectively as the Efieri, most of these tribes didn't think of themselves as Efieri until long after. Until they united against the Tezzarian invasion under the banner of the largest tribe - the Efieri - they considered themselves to be a number of different people and defined themselves by their own tribes' terms. The Invasion: Only moments after the Tezzarians made landfall in the islands, their contact with the Efieri got off to a bad start. The nineteenth legion, led by Legate Torathine Geliand - "Legio XIX" by the Tezzarian naming scheme - were immediately attacked by the local Efieri tribe. Legio XIX fought a long, hard campaign against the majority of the Efieri tribes, though some did ally themselves to Tezzaria. By the end of their campaign, most of the Efieri tribes and all of those within imperial territory were officially allied to Tezzaria with most of the dissent being from small factions inside of supposedly pacified tribes. Tezzaria only conquered a small region of the Geloran isles based in the coastal fortress city of Etulith before the Collapse, and they were not especially invested in the region by the time that the demons invaded. It's worth mentioning that the Legion had brought a substantial number of priests of their official patron god - Ralen, the god of light and enemy of darkness. At the time it was a small mystery cult in the Tezzarian empire dedicated to the eradication to the horrors of the night and the safety of the common man, but it played an enormous part in the founding of Torathis. The Collapse: The Empire ordered the return of Legio XIX, to the mainland in order to help defend cities that were considered more important to the imperial cause. While most legends of the collapse in Torathis tell of the herioc nineteenth legion deciding to stay behind and defend their homes and families, the reality is that they didn't have much of a choice. A group of rebellious Efieri had crept on board the Legion's fleet while it was at port and set the ships ablaze, sinking the entire fleet to the bottom of the sea. Without ships or any other means of transport back to the mainland, the choice of Legio XIX was clear. They managed to keep the demons out of Etulith, barely, with substantial help from the Priesthood of Ralen's divine magic. The Efieri tribes and the legion fought on the same side of the battle-line almost unanimously, despite their feelings of one another, and managed to survive the horrors of the Collapse until the veil was raised, kicking the demons out of the world and making it relatively safe again. After the Collapse: After the Collapse, the future was uncertain. Communication with the empire had collapsed and what remained of the nineteenth legion was stranded in the Geloran Isles. In order to head off reigniting conflict between their people, Legate Torathine married Idris Eliot, the daughter of Earl Uthor Eliot, high chief of the largest tribe of Efieri (The Efieri tribe, as it turned out - the Efieri never thought of themselves as one collective people until the Tezzarian invasion, when they united under the banner of the Efieri.) The Torathian territory on the western Isle was granted to the Eliots while the eastern Isle's territory was ruled by the man who was now King Torathine Geliand. The kingdom of Torathis finally knew internal peace. Outside of Torathis' Borders, however, it was a different story. Other tribes, now known as Efieri even though they would resent the name, saw the move as a cowering betrayal in favor of the Tezzarians by the man they had chosen as their leader, and fled further into the untamed forests. Years of skirmishes across the edges of the kingdom forced the kingdom to slowly expand against their new enemies and forced the descendents of King Torathine to tighten their grip on the kingdom in an attempt to stop it from slipping between their fingers. The church of Ralen, while treated reasonably well, quickly began to chafe at what they saw as draconian measures by the Geliand Kings. Rather than enter open conflict with the king, the Church left and built the fortress of Vertwych. At the beginning little more than a church surrounded by a small wooden wall, it didn't take long for masses of the faithful from across Torathis to flock to the its walls and settle the surrounding area. Talented masons, architects, and warriors joined the ranks of the faithful and quickly built the fortress of Vertwych into a holding of considerable strength rivaling the capitol city of Etulith. The birth of the Efieri pirates began with the introduction of the Tezzarian Empire's advanced boatbuilding techniques. The Efieri across the Islands began constructing bigger and better boats with their newfound organization and coordination. Sailing ships developed, and then they figured out how to add a topdeck and a bottom deck to their ships. Bulky cogs gave way quickly to sleeker and speedier designs, ships that could outsail and outmaneuver anything that the Tezzarian Empire had come up with on its own. Efieri ships ranged in design from small one-masted ships that could barely fit a dozen men to mammoth creations that required a crew of nearly twenty and could fit another sixty belowdecks for a voyage with supplies stashed in the aft end of the ship. Most of these ships were low on armaments, but that was made up for by the superior archery skill of the Efieri and their fearsomeness in a fight. It didn't take long for the Efieri to earn themselves a reputation as feared pirates and raiders around the Geloran isles and far beyond. Religion Ralen: God of Light, Mercy, and Standing against Evil. Symbols include Fire, Lions, and the Sun. Ralen's church is is known for its strong military presence, magical affinity, and steadfast opposition to what it considers evil. Ralen is known as a god of justice as much as mercy and as such many of the courts across Torathis are adjudicated by priests of Ralen, in addition to the space that priests of Ralen are all but guaranteed on nobles' courts as advisors. In short, the Church of Ralen will go to lengths to spread their message of light and goodness while smiting what they consider to be dark and evil. Lia'Lihone: Goddess of Shadows and Secrets. Symbols include Quills, Crows, and the Moon. Lia'Lihone is known for... well, she's not particularly well known. The Church of Ralen canonized her as a monstrous threat to humanity and the moral fabric of Torathis itself. The reality is somewhat more complicated than that. Lia'Lihone is the goddess of Shadows and secrets. Lia'Lihone's church is decentralized and kept a closely guarded secret from outsiders. A far more benevolent goddess than the Church of Ralen makes her out to be, Lia'Lihone - and by extension, Lihonans - see themselves as protectors of humanity and the other sentient races of the world. She's devoted to the safety of people against the dark forces of the world, and works in secret to dismantle evil and otherwise harmful plots, whether demonic or simply sinister. Her church has no official colors, nor hierarchy, nor a reliable method of communicating with other sects. Yemos: God of Calm Seas and Celebration. Symbols include Octopi, a ship in profile, and gentle lines representing waves. Yemos is a very relaxed god who is often patron of swashbucklers of the more gentlemanly persuasion and both sailors and revelers in general. Yemos has been begrudgingly canonized in the Church of Ralen as having authority over the waves thanks to his shared dislike of evil and sadism. While many pirates do follow Yemos, a core tenant of his creed is that suffering is bad and should not be inflicted on people unwillingly. Killing a foe in a quick and respectful manner is fine, but inflicting suffering on him or her - whether torture of a foe, brutal treatment of a prisoner, rape, or any other number of cruelties - is considered an unworthy act. Yemos' creed is simple, but far from forgiving: Anybody who breaks Yemos' creed can no longer expect the winds on the seas to blow favorably or the waves to treat them kindly.
