Skipping Classes (Open)

Boredom. That was one way to describe how classes felt to her. Uncaring for the world a girl decided to skip class on campus on top of a table laying on her back; her backpack behind her head with her left arm as a rest and her right holding a paperback book. The curiosity to know what would happen next in the novel was the reason she decided, despite being in her black uniform and clearly looking like she was ready for class. It was simply a last second decision to ignore her attendance that day to indulge her curiosity for the novel in hand.

If one were to get close enough to see the cover of the book it had a cheesy romance title. The girl's attire sported the black uniform with red accents normally given to scouted students; a pair of black pants covering her legs. None of the other accessories could readily be seen until one got close, to which the ribbon most female students wore absent along with the blazer which a sleeve could be seen sticking out of her backpack. A light melody could also be heard, softly at first, but as one got closer the melodymelody was easier to make out and if one was in touch with current internet memes would instantly recognize the song right away. The song seemed to be on a loop as no other melody filled the air the entire time.

The only movement that came from the girl was the turning of the pages with the occasional position adjustment as she laid down. Now what move shall you take?

From a distance, under the melody, there was a rumble. A light one, from a maintenance cart with a bum wheel. It slowly grew closer, punctuated once or twice by the wheel getting caught and stopping, a muffled curse, and a small thump as a swift kick got it going again.

Junko Takagi walked the cart from one building to another, a list of minor fixes half-complete balanced on top. She wiped sweat off of her forehead with the back of her hand, surveyed the quad, and stopped. Squinted. What the... hell was on that table... oh.

She looked over her shoulder at the entrance to the building she just left, where two teachers talked to each other on their smoke break. She looked back at the girl sunning herself on the table and sighed. Oh, boy.

The rumble grew louder, then came to a stop on the path near the table.

"Hey. Uh, kid. Hey."

Rumble rumble rumble.

A cocked eyebrow was the first and only response to the noise she gave before ignoring it to the sound of her music with the turn of a page. However the noise started to get louder which prompted her to reach for her headphones to help block it out with her left hand. Unfortunately for her the headphones were not where they should have been which started to frustrate her slightly. Before she sat up to get a proper search for her headphones a voice spoke out to her.

Now for Mai she was left with two choices. Does she ignore the voice? Or does she be somewhat polite and answer? She was debating it in her mind as she grabbed her backpack and started to search through for her headphones, seemingly ignoring the woman at first. Mai had taken a quick glance after all. Unable to find her headphones she sighed reaching for her phone and pausing the song. Her decision was made for her.

"What? Was my music too loud or something?"

Junko shifted her weight back and forth as Mai rummaged in her bag. Come on... c'mon, don't be a jerk... As Mai looked up, she saw the woman from a few feet away. Oh, right, that janitor.

"No!" she said with a crooked smile, relaxing a bit, "No, uh, not really, but that's not your biggest problem here." Junko gestured with her chin back at the entrance to the building where the teachers stood, talking. It was only a matter of time...

"I'm not a narc but, uh, you might want to find a different place to cut class. I don't want you to get in trouble." Junko crouched and took a look at the wonky wheel, trying to remain as inconspicuous as she could.

"Just a friendly heads up."

A small shrug was her only response. Mai knew what she was doing and what could possibly happen, but it didn't bother her at all. If the teachers had come up to her she would have simply ignored them like she has done previously, gotten up, and wandered off to continue reading her book. It isn't like her grades would suffer, but the janitor wouldn't know that if she hadn't recognized who Mai was in the first place. Though she figured all the students might blend together with very few sticking out.

"If they had not bothered with me now I doubt they care, or are just waiting for something else. Not exactly the first time I have skipped class on campus grounds."

Rooftop, cafeteria, random tables or benches on the grounds, even the men's locker room one time. Mai just looked for the quietest place and went about her business. Was easier to get away with it at school than at the mall since officers would get on her case and that was never fun.

"Apologies not trying to sound rude or condescending. I do thank you for the friendly warning. Just do not really feel like going to class today....Despite my attire painting a different story. What time is it regardless? And why is that cart so noisy? Figured an academy such as this would afford better equipment."

Junko lifted her eyebrows and her smile widened as she straightened up and leaned against her cart.

"Oh, word?" she said, tilting her head, "yeah, well, fuck the system." She nodded, basking in the camaraderie. If only Junko had been so self-assured in school. She lifted her hand and waved her apologies away.

"Not at all. I'm happy when people know what they want and go for it. Oh, uh - " Junko fumbled her hand into the pocket of her jumpsuit, shifting a flopping tied sleeve out of the way. She pulled out a thick, old smartphone, cutesy charms dangling and clinking against each other.

"The time? Uhhh, like, one thirty? So that's..." she squinted, thinking, "just after seventh... period? I don't remember. Past lunch, though."

Her smile grew in warmth as she shrugged, "Right? But I guess they have, uh, higher priority things to dump funds into than maintenance carts. Stuff that they'd put on brochures and the like. 'Look how state-of-the-art our cleaning equipment is!' isn't going to get any Diet member's kids enrolled, I guess."

Mai blinked a few times. It was that late into the day already? She had only stopped to read a few chapters not the entire novel! Well it was too late for her to head to class at this point if that was the case, just meant she would have to attend class the following day to keep her attendance up.

"Not why I skip classes exactly. Not sure if they were completely visible, but I am a scouted student with a genius level IQ so basic classes are very tiresome to attend day after day. I show up once a week to turn in assignments and do any tests or quizzes that are required for class. Spend the rest of the time, well, doing this. Or studying the research materials I have access to."

The joke about the state of the art cleaning equipment got Mai to smile, though only a small raise on the right side of her mouth. It was amusing, but nothing she saw as worth a full smile in her mind as boredom slowly started to once again rear it's ugly head.

"I for one find it disrespectful to those they hire as cleaning staff if the equipment is in such disrepair. Though if the promise of access to research material I wanted, which is impressive, this school would never have caught my attention."

This prompted a small thought in Mai's head. Which followed by a small chuckle at the thought.

"I suppose being able to scout out a genius and convincing them to attend would draw Diet Member children. Not often can an academic establishment claim to have a certified genius in not just Japan, but the United States as well. Oh. I must apologize once more, I never properly introduced myself despite all the....Bragging about my intellect."

As she apologized Mai got up from her seat on the table and did a small bow towards the woman, "My name is Mai Rivori. Charmed to meet you....Wait I believe it is pleased to meet you. Habit of a good friend of mine comes out when I greet someone at times."

Junko stiffened, and her smile went hard and plastic. She gave a few 'oh, yeah's and 'uh huh's, keeping her voice as level as possible. All the while, she couldn't keep her jaw from clenching. If that girl had it, she might as well flaunt it, right? Junko should be charitable, right? Why not brag... even if... it's... a little...

Junko relaxed only a touch as Mai stood and faced her. This type of interaction was part for the course for Mishima - fool on Junko for expecting anything else.

Junko returned the bow, pushing it a bit deeper to hide her flushed face. "Charmed and pleased, lucky me," she said lightly, her tone more brittle than before. Her hands rested on her jumpsuit-clad thighs and she clenched her fists into the fabric for a moment before she brushed her thighs off, turning away.

"Sorry for taking up your time," she said, kicking at the cart's wheel once more to get it moving again.

Of all the time she spent alone and ignoring people there was a skill Mai had obtained unintentionally. Her observation skills told her things about people despite rarely engaging in conversation. As she relaxed her position from the bow she noticed Junko, both in her tone and her posture, that there was something off. What it was, well, she was unsure of. A people person she was not after all.

"It is quite alright Miss. It is rare to hold a conversation with someone who is not....Formal I believe is the word I am looking for. Oh what is it He used to say..."

Mai tilted her head for a moment, her left arm resting underneath her breasts as her right elbow found a spot in her open palm, her right hand resting underneath her chin in a sort of thinking pose. Mai knew about her own issues...But simply ignored them. There was no need to be bothered by such things. Expect when He was right about them. And proving someone right when she was in the wrong was one thing Mai did not like to necessarily do.

"If you do not mind, may I continue to stay in your company? I do need to improve on my social behavior so it may help speaking with someone who is not so formal in their speech as you are. It is quite refreshing....No insult intended Miss. I also would like to understand what it is I have done that may have upset you. Unless I am reading your tone and the way you bowed false than I apologize for that."

Junko did a double-take that involved most of her upper body. She ended it with a lean back far enough it gave her a double chin, her eyes wide in shock.

"You want - what? To - I mean - I - " she said, babbling, before she straightened and let her shoulders relax. She rubbed her neck, tilting her head down for a moment.

"... well, shit. I mean, uh, yeah. That's... that's fine. Practice is the best, right?"

Junko gave Mai a small smile - but it was genuine. "I'd stay to chat but I still have things to finish. You.... want to come with me? You don't gotta help or nothin', just watch. And talk, I guess."
