It was a Wednesday, which meant that Kikuhime's various clubs were not meeting, and her tutors did not have anything to offer her until later in the evening. As such, she had called home to let Mari know she would be staying to study at the library, so she would not need to come pick her up until later, and now the Yamashina heiress was sitting and reading from a particularly dense calculus textbook. Her lips curved upwards in a pleasant smile, and her posture was upright, a proper example of a well-bred young lady. I wonder what's for dinner... She mused. I rather hope it's something a little on the spicy end of things. Her food had been a trifle blander than she might've liked for the past couple days, and her attempts to make herself some junk food had been carefully foiled by her staff. A quiet whisper drew her out of her thoughts - nothing unusual, as she was long since used to others whispering about her as though they forgot she had ears of her own. It was amazing, in a sense if you acted as though you could not hear them, people were far more willing to talk as though you could not. She lifted her eyes, examining the library about her. There were a few first years, a couple of her classmates, and a few people she recognized only by face. Locating the source of the whispers, she offered a quizzical smile to the young men who had been speaking, watching with somewhat vindictive satisfaction as they flushed and returned their eyes to their studies. Now, I should really actually start studying... |

Sitting in the library Saki looked a little down as looked through her book on English. Why did those idiots on the other side of world on their island make such a complicated language? She took a look at the paper next to the book that was supposed to be her homework for tomorrow. She kinda wanted to go back to her room and play a bit on her handheld, but of course school life had to put a spanner in that wheel. Didn't help that these translations made little to no sense. 'There wasn't many time left' Saki hastily wrote on a sentence. She just went back to her book as she felt she made a slight mistake. She scraped through 'many' and replaced it with 'much' above it. The rest as well was full of spelling and grammar errors as well. It couldn't be helped, before this English wasn't that hard nor was much attention paid to it. In this class she noticed quickly that the standards were higher than what she was used to. In most subjects this wasn't so much of a problem as she still got by. Not so much with English. At any rate, the written part of her homework was finished. On the reading, the final part. 'In what language was this text written?' Flew through her mind as she finished reading the text for the first time. In agony she looked around and heard some boys on a table next to hers whispering, but she couldn't really figure out what they were talking about from the sound alone. Yet they looked up and suddenly stopped. She quickly followed the gaze of the boys and saw an upperclassmen sitting alone. For some reason when she looked at the Saki got an idea in her head. Two girls, both alone, both trying to study. She quickly cleaned her table and went sit in front of the unknown student with her usual smile. "Hey there! Want to study together?" Saki asked as she placed her bag aside the chair opposite the one the other girl was sitting on. Now she was closer by she could get a better look at the girl in front of her. She seemed to be the proper girl type. Maybe that was her type? If not that didn't mean they couldn't get along, or at least try. |

A small melody came from a table a few aisles away from the rest of the students. On top of the table lay a girl, her long black hair scattered about her pillow which happened to be her backpack, with a rather think book detailing various medical practices, terms, and general knowledge of medicine. Her gaze was rather aloof, bored even with each page turned. The air about the girl was...Almost serious despite how casually she laid on top of the table and read the book. The pages turned back and forward frequent enough to give off the air of someone studying, but there was something else in her movements that gave off a different feel. Like she was hiding something, which was true. If one observed and got close enough they could tell that now only was the girl reading the medical book, but a smaller book in between the pages. Now which was she actually reading? Well there is one way to find out after all. |

Kikuhime lifted her head to level bright blue eyes at Saki, a gentle smile on her lips. Oh? Who is this? I do not recognize her, and she would seem to not recognize me. A faint sense of satisfaction descended upon her, though her expression did not alter even in the slightest. "Of course. I am called Kikuhime Yamashina. Might I have the pleasure of knowing your name?" She seems a little enthusiastic, I suppose. Forgetting her manners. Kikuhime reflected. How refreshing. At this point, of course, Kikuhime noticed the music blaring out of some inconsiderate student's headphones. Ugh. The irritation she felt was transformed into a mildly disappointed glance in the direction of the student in question, but she set it aside. After Saki introduced herself, the heiress graced her with an incredibly well-practiced and nigh-perfect smile. "What was it you needed help with, Sakurai-san?" |

Saki smiled as Kikuhime introduced herself. What a beautiful name. The next moment she noticed that something was missing in the library. The silence that usually filled the room was broken by another girl sitting a little further away. She didn't seem to be too interested in whatever book she was reading. Saki herself didn't mind the music at all. She didn't forget you actually had to be silent in the library, but this music was certainly refreshing for her after spending a good part of her after school time here. As such she just smiled in the direction of the student and then went back to her conversation. Well Kikuhime figured her plan out quick. But she didn't seem to mind much. Guess Saki was lucky this time. "My name is Saki Sakurai. Nice to meet you Yamashina-San" Saki answered after the other girl introduced herself. "Hehe... I had trouble translating a few words from English, the Dictionary didn't really help much either." There were probably multiple grammar mistakes as well but she could sniff those out later after her answers were actually written down on paper. |

(Italics are Mai speaking English. Have fun picturing this xD) The glances did not go unnoticed. Observing people was something Mai did quite frequently when she was ignoring the world to...Well be lazy, read her manga or actually study. Which in this case was the last two in that list. Multitasking a little "studying" while enjoying her manga....Was a lie she was not enjoying it her manga at all. Reaching into her pocket the melody disappears as the headphones drop around her neck with a small movement from her head. If anything Mai was polite and would apologize about her music since she did tend to play it rather loud and uncaring no matter where she decided to take a seat for the time being. Picking up her backpack and textbook/manga in hand Mai walks over to the two girls to apologize for her music if it had caused any disruption to their studies when she overhears the trouble with the English language. Should she? Well the bigger question in her mind would be "Is it worth the trouble?" Well she did need to be more social.....Even if she did not want to. Before she began speaking Mai performed a small bow to the two girls; the accents that told she was a scouted student becoming more apparent up close than from a distance. "Apologies if my music was disrupting your studying. Also apologies for intruding, but I did overhear that you are having trouble with the English language. If you two do not mind I could...I do not want to say tutor, but could assist if you do not mind. English is a strange language till you are used to it after all." Kikuhime nodded slightly at Saki's words, smiling kindly at her kouhai. English, hm. Well, I can help her with that easily enough, I suppose. She opened her mouth slightly in preparation to speak, but before she could, the rude student arrived. Kikuhime lifted her bright blue gaze to meet the new student's. She's not a Mishima High School student... she must be from the University. The University student was obviously skilled in English, Kikuhime quickly realized, if rather impolite. Did no one remember to introduce themselves these days? This was the second time within a few minutes! She sighed inwardly, then replied in Japanese, mindful that Sakurai probably could not understand English as well as Kikuhime could. "Thank you for your offer, but what of your own studies? I would not wish to interrupt..." That done, she quickly moved on to the introductions. "I am called Kikuhime Yamashina, and this is Saki Sakurai-san. How might we address you?" Looking back to Sakurai, she smiled slightly. "What was it that you needed help with, specifically, Sakurai-san? English can be difficult for we who grow up speaking Japanese." |

As Saki opened her books the music girl came to their table. Once Mai started to talk in English her head went slightly sideways and gained a questionable look. She tried to think about what the girl just said, but she most certainly couldn't understand someone who spoke English so casually. Failing to think of what Mai just said in English she Turned to Kikuhime. "Do you have any idea what she just said?" Saki asked the Kikuhime. Mostly because she wanted to know how well Kikuhime's English was. Maybe she just asked someone like herself, who tried so hard to learn English but end up more struggling than actually learning. She opened her books on the right pages and began search for that one word that she couldn't find out what it meant. "Right for starters..." Saki began as she searched her text. "This Word! Serendepity? She tried pronounce the word slowly, more because she had trouble speaking it herself as well. She actually tried to search this word up earlier, but was only met with mixed answers. "I have trouble finding out what this word means. And the context: 'Guess it's my bit of Serendipity.' Doesn't really help either. She said towards the two other girls. Sure this wasn't all that she didn't get from the text, but surely it was a start. |

Did she forget to say something again? Mai tried to think about what she had just said and thought that perhaps her talking the way she had may have upset or confused the two girls. Mai made a mental note not to do that again as all it brought is confusion to those who did not understand English. Then it was brought up about her name. That could easily have also been why the feeling she was getting about being impolite was starting to settle in the back of her mind....And the thought disappeared as soon as it appeared. "Mai Rivori. It is charming to meet you Yamashina-san, Sakurai-san. I mean it is nice to meet the two of you. As for my own studies?" Now came the part where Mai had to think of her wording. She did not want to come off arrogant, condescending, or anything of the sort. Despite her intellect there was no string of words that immediately came to mind about how she should approach this question without coming off....Rude. A word she really did not want associated with her. "There is no need to worry about my own studies. Was beginning to become bored trying to read the textbook containing information already available in my mind. Being a genius has some perks." When Saki brought up the word Serendipity Mai had to think for a moment. How to best explain the word in a manner in which the girl could understand? Perhaps a simple answer was all that was needed instead of going into a long explanation over nothing. "Serendipity simply means an occurrence of events that produce in a happy or beneficial manner. Or a different version of the same answer meaning the faculty or phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for. The first definition and the second mean the same thing. I just poorly worded it the first time my apologies. A good example of this would be love at first sight. Neither person is looking for the one, however, upon seeing each other both feel the same strong feelings towards each other. Do I need to explain it in a simpler manner or did you understand that?" |

Kikuhime inclined her head gracefully at Sakurai's words. "Yes, I do. Rivori-san expressed that she'd heard us discussing English, and that English is difficult for those who are not familiar with the tongue." She sighed inwardly. I can already tell that this will end up with a headache. The heiress settled back as Rivori declared herself a genius, blithely unconcerned with her own studies. Well, it is admirable that she is willing to help those less gifted than herself, but she could use some work on how to do so in a way that does not irritate them. She smiled serenely, listening patiently to the University student's explanation. Long practice kept her from expressing visible signs of agreement or approval until she was done speaking, at which point Kikuhime sighed inwardly again, recognizing the signs of someone too intelligent to easily speak with those less intellectual than themselves. She must be a genius. Like Miyama-san, she simply has no real conception of how to communicate with her intellectual inferiors. "Perhaps Rivori-san, a simpler if less accurate way of understanding it would be to call it 'good fortune,' as one might receive from a shrine during New Year's." She suggests, bowing her head in polite apologies for what might be seen as a correction. Edited by Endwaar, Aug 9 2017, 10:11 AM.
