Name: Kumataro Akanishi Gender: Cis Male Age: 20 Physical Appearance: Kumataro is a young man from Japan who stands six feet and one inch high. He is of average build, and has fairly dark skin due to his combination of Japanese and African-American lineage. The man's facial features are quite youthful, even for his age, making him appear as if he was in his late teenage years. His sharp, wide-set eyes are brown. His lips are thick and downturned, turning what would otherwise be a neutral expression into one resembling irritation. Kumataro's black hair is slicked back into a ducktail style, with a prominent cowlick shaped like a lightning bolt hanging over the middle of his forehead. Kumataro wears a leather biker jacket and a pair of fingerless gloves, both coloured in black, with a white muscle shirt underneath. A bright blue bandana bearing white polka dots hangs around his neck like a scarf. He also wears a pair of blue bell-bottom jeans and black cowboy boots with silver spurs. Backstory: Born on the 18th of July, Kumataro Akanishi is the first son of a man named Hideo Akanishi and his girlfriend, Danielle Ryder. Prior to Kumataro's conception, Hideo and Danielle made a living by selling rare Duel Monsters cards and competing in tournaments. When Danielle was discovered to be pregnant, she agreed to move to Japan with Hideo and purchase a house in his hometown, the city of Nagano. To keep poverty at bay, Hideo borrowed a steep amount of money from a local moneylender and worked in two different jobs at once in order to pay the debt off, leaving him little time to spend with his new family. Kumataro's brother, Suguru Akanishi, was born four years later. As the Akanishi brothers got older, they became almost inseparable; from daily chores to dueling, the two did nearly everything together as a team. Meanwhile, Hideo and Danielle's relationship gradually began to deteriorate over time due to financial difficulties. Kumataro and his Elemental HERO deck were quite popular among his peers, and most of them considered Kumataro to be the best duelist in their circle. Much like the majority of his friends, Kumataro was disliked by his teachers and performed below average in academic pursuits, barely managing to graduate from high school. When Kumataro was sixteen years of age, a group of loan sharks approached the Akanishi household and harassed Hideo, threatening him with violence in an attempt to collect money that he allegedly owed them. Having been accosted in front of his wife and children, Hideo had no choice but to confess that he had been borrowing money in secret. The loans were not being used to get by, but were instead being pocketed to fund a get-rich-quick scheme that would supposedly keep them wealthy forever; the catch was that it required him to find a card known as "Number C1000," a legendary Xyz Monster that is widely believed to simply be a myth propagated by ambitious collectors. Danielle harshly rebuked this plan of Hideo's, and told him that they couldn't continue to be rare card hunters while they had a family to take care of. Hideo seemed to back down and give in, but his greed would soon rear its ugly head once more; after he wrote and released a book containing the secrets of Accel Synchro Summoning, decided to run off regardless of Danielle's wishes. While searching around the house for him, Kumataro instead discovered his father's Synchron deck and a small notepad with a message inside. In his letter, Hideo requested Kumataro to take up the torch and become a master of Accel Synchro Summoning himself. Though Kumataro began to resent Hideo for leaving his family behind, he reluctantly took his father's deck and swore that he would surpass him as a duelist. The Akanishi brothers and their mother were uncertain of how to proceed in life, as the debt they would have to pay in Hideo's place was equal to two million yen. Kumataro would have a difficult time finding a job due to his poor educational record, and Suguru was still too young to enter any long-term profitable professions. Danielle managed to find work, but the income of her job alone was not enough. Hoping to assist their mother and earn a little glory along the way, Kumataro and Suguru decided to travel across Japan and compete in Duel Monsters tournaments together. In theory, they would return home with the prize money from their victories and pay off their family's debt in small chunks. Though their plan was much more difficult to execute in practice, the Akanishi brothers pressed on, determined to overcome their hardships and stay afloat in an uncaring world. Four years later, Kumataro and Suguru went on a journey to America over the summer, seeking their fortune at the Duel Monsters tournaments there. On this expedition, they met Bruno Brunetti, a duelist from Aurelius. Kumataro and Bruno soon found themselves dueling one another as the last two standing in a competition for a sizable cash prize. Despite Kumataro's best of efforts, he was ultimately unable to defeat Bruno's Machina deck. As Bruno walked away with the prize money that would have paid the Akanishi family's debts once and for all, Kumataro and Suguru looked on with a newfound hatred in their eyes. Desiring revenge above all else, the two brothers took a train to Aurelius, hatching a plot to humiliate their unrequited rival in front of his own neighbours. Personality: Kumataro is an exuberant, enthusiastic individual who charges headfirst into a tough situation with utmost confidence and reckless abandon. He is extremely loyal to his friends and family, and would put (almost) everything on the line for the sake of their well-being. Inversely, he is not too bright, often relying on Suguru's intellect in a pinch. He has a strong sense of morality, going out of his way to do what he believes is right, even if it comes at his expense. Kumataro is also somewhat quick to anger, but a kind heart lies beneath his tough, stormy exterior. Kumataro's favourite food is sea salt-flavoured ice cream. He is also passionate about comic books, aspiring to become a comic artist himself. Spiders and insects are the subject of his greatest fears. Active Deck: Kumataro uses a Synchron deck. Unlike most Synchron Decks, Kumataro does not use any Junk cards except for Junk Synchron and Junk Warrior. His deck relies on monsters that provide draw power and create tokens combined with Road Warrior to fill the field with Synchro Monsters. Duel Spirit: Kumataro's Duel Spirit is Quickdraw Synchron. Quickdraw Synchron once acted as a guardian to Hideo, and feels obligated to protect Kumataro as a result. Neither of them think much of the other, however.
