Name: Suguru Akanishi
Gender: Cis Male
Age: 16
Physical Appearance: Suguru is a young Japanese boy whose height measures up to five feet and four inches. He possesses a very slim build, and his combination of Japanese and African-American lineage gives him dark skin. His brown eyes are wide and slanted, with a pair of prominent black circles beneath them. The boy's lips are almost unusually thin and wide. His black hair is curly and frizzy, spreading out in the shape of a short, unkempt afro.
Suguru's outfit is very similar to his older brother's. A blue bandana with white polka dots is wrapped around the boy's head, folded to resemble a thick headband that conceals most of his forehead. He wears a black leather biker vest and a white, short-sleeved button-down shirt that is left partially undone. His wrists are covered by black leather armbands, dotted with steel studs. Covering his legs is a pair of blue skinny jeans and black cowboy boots with silver spurs.
Backstory: Spoiler: click to toggle Suguru Akanishi was born in the Japanese city of Nagano on the 9th of November. Much of his life has been spent living under the shadow of his older brother, Kumataro. Though they cared deeply for one another and did nearly everything together, Suguru was often belittled by Kumataro's friends for being much smaller and weaker. When Kumataro demanded his associates to stop picking on his younger brother, they simply chose to ignore Suguru instead, turning him into a fifth wheel. With little to no confidence in his own social abilities, the young lad may have been surrounded by many people, but he was nonetheless virtually alone. Moreover, Hideo Akanishi and Danielle Ryder, the parents of the Akanishi brothers, began to constantly argue over their declining financial situation, leaving the oblivious Kumataro to be Suguru's only company for quite some time.
When Suguru was eight years of age, Kumataro began to play Duel Monsters. Not quite interested in the game himself, the younger of the Akanishi brothers was content to watch and cheer his older sibling on. Four years later, however, Suguru became a duelist as well, striving to be accepted by Kumataro's friends. As soon as he built his Symphonic Warrior deck and learned how to play, the boy challenged a young man named Kyoji Kawajiri to a duel. For two years, Kyoji had pretended to be his friend, bullying him while others weren't looking and threatening to kill the kid if he told anyone. Eager to put Suguru back in his place, Kyoji accepted the lad's request and lured him into an alleyway, swiftly claiming victory with his terrifying Gimmick Puppets. After defeating Suguru, Kyoji beat the child half to death for daring to resist him.
The next day, Suguru woke up in the same spot his duel took place. Still too injured to walk, the boy attempted to crawl home, but he didn't make it far before running out of energy. He was promptly discovered by Kumataro, who hastily carried him to the nearest hospital. On the way there, Suguru asked his brother to teach him how to win in Duel Monsters before drifting out of consciousness.
As he recovered from his injuries, Suguru was visited by his family almost daily. On the day that he returned home, the boy explained his plight to Kumataro, pleading his brother once again to help him improve as a duelist. Seeing the desperation in Suguru's eyes, Kumataro accepted his younger brother's request, and began mentoring him immediately. After a week of arduous training, Suguru sent a letter to Kyoji Kawajiri, inviting him to another duel at the same alley their first battle transpired in. Though he nearly lost once again, Suguru managed to turn the situation around and emerge victorious. Kyoji, enraged by his defeat, pulled out a switchblade and attempted to stab his opponent, only to be ambushed and disarmed by Kumataro. Together, the two brothers delivered a brutal beating to their enemy, further bonding with one another over a bout of violence.
Later that year, a group of loan sharks approached the Akanishi household in search of Suguru and Kumataro's father, Hideo Akanishi. When Hideo answered them, they demanded that he pay them a steep amount of money that he supposedly owed them. Seeing that his family witnessed the commotion, Hideo had no choice to confess that he had been secretly borrowing money. These loans were being amassed as startup funding for a scheme that he claimed would keep them wealthy forever. However, it required him to find a card named "Number C1000," a legendary Xyz Monster that is widely considered to be a myth created by ambitious collectors. Suguru and Kumataro's mother, Danielle Ryder, harshly admonished Hideo for this plot of his, telling him their life as rare card hunters was over.
Though Hideo appeared to be humbled by Danielle, he suddenly disappeared right after writing a book on Accel Synchro Summoning. This sudden move left the remaining Akanishi family unsure of how to proceed; the debt they had to pay in Hideo's place totalled to two million yen, and none of them had a source of income. Kumataro would not be able to get one due to his poor education, and Suguru was not yet old enough to find a profitable profession. Danielle found work on her own, but it wasn't enough to pay off their newfound debt. In hopes of assisting his mother and earning glory along the way, Suguru joined Kumataro in travelling across Japan, competing for cash prizes in Duel Monsters tournaments. Their plan was to return home every so often and reimburse the moneylenders in small chunks. Though it proved much more difficult to actually execute this strategy of theirs, the Akanishi brothers refused to give in, doing their best to stay afloat in an uncaring world.
Four years later, Kumataro and Suguru went on a journey to America over the summer, hoping to make a killing by entering a Duel Monsters tournament there. In the event they attended, Suguru was knocked out of the bracket early, but Kumataro eventually made it to the finals. Even though he was no longer in the competition, Suguru watched his older brother from the sidelines, cheering him along the entire way. The final duel of this tournament was between Kumataro and Bruno Brunetti, a duelist from Aurelius. In the end, Bruno was the one to walk away with the grand prize, humiliating Kumataro before a countless number of spectators. Now desiring revenge above all else, the Akanishi brothers took a train to Aurelius, hatching a plot to get back at their unrequited rival.
Personality: Suguru is a clever, shrewd individual who uses his sharp wits to survive the hardships of life. Despite his intelligence, Suguru is not particularly confident; more often than not, he is content to act through Kumataro instead of confronting situations directly. Such severe anxiety causes the lad to be rather reserved, refusing to open up to anyone his older brother doesn't also trust. Inversely, he is fiercely loyal to anyone he does view as trustworthy, and does nearly anything in his power to help them.
Suguru's favourite food is wasabi peas. Though he is reluctant to admit it, American classic rock is among his greatest of passions. Ever since his childhood, the boy has dreamed of becoming a guitarist. Due to past experiences, he is deathly afraid of puppets and porcelain dolls.
Active Deck: Fearing that his Symphonic Warrior deck would be too weak to use in tournaments, Suguru now uses a Superheavy Samurai deck. To maximize the effectiveness of his Superheavy Samurai monsters, he does not use any Spell or Trap Cards at all.
Duel Spirit: Suguru Akanishi's duel spirit is Superheavy Samurai Flutist. Suguru's spirit partner thinks very highly of the lad, seeing a potential for greatness in him. Such fond feelings are one-sided, however; the boy himself is terrified of Superheavy Samurai Flutist, and doesn't make use of the spirit unless he deems it absolutely necessary.
Other Details: Suguru dresses after an obscure American guitarist and singer named Lord Galaxy, one of his mother's favourite musicians.
