Backstory: Spoiler: click to toggle Giovana was born on the first of May in the Floria District of Aurelius. Her parents, Ignazio Leone and Marcella Brunetti, had already established the jewelry company Brilliant Diamond before her birth, giving her a very comfortable childhood. Shortly after Giovana's life began, Marcella had two daughters, Rosabella and Camilla Leone. Each of the Leone daughters were pampered generously by their mother, but none of them received much attention from Ignazio, their father. As a child, Giovana constantly bullied her sisters, only receiving light punishment from Marcella as a result. She continued to terrorize her siblings until her eleventh birthday; on the eve of that fateful day, Ignazio talked with Giovana in the Leone Estate's gardens. Her father delivered a long-winded lecture about the importance of family, urging the her to take care of her sisters from then on. Giovana, touched by Ignazio's words, burst into tears and rushed back inside to apologize to her sisters. From then on, she tried to be a role model to Rosabella and Camilla, but they chose to remain distant to her.
The following year, Giovana found herself unable to rest one night. After stepping out of bed, the young girl decided to head to her home's living room, seeing that the television was left on. The screen projected an image of a DVD menu, with an emblem bearing the label "Academy of the Golden Dragon" on the bottom right corner. Intrigued, Giovana reached for the remote control and played the video. The first thing she saw was a pair of teenagers, both facing one another from opposite sides of what appeared to be an arena. A disembodied voice then announced the names of the mysterious figures, who were none other than Giovana's own parents. While she watched the game of Duel Monsters unfold, the girl suddenly felt a hand ruffle her hair. When Giovana looked up, she found Ignazio staring right back at her. He then seated himself next to his daughter, explaining each aspect of the game as the recording continued to play. When the video came to an end, Ignazio then told Giovana how he and Marcella came to meet. Though the lass was enthralled by her father's story, she could not remain awake long enough to hear its ending.
When she woke up the next day, Giovana suddenly became fascinated with Duel Monsters; wherever the girl went, she would tell others that her parents were master duelists, and she would eventually become one as well. Later that evening, she was approached by Ignazio, who had heard of her boasting from Marcella. He then handed a deck of cards to Giovana, telling her to go through with her claims or never speak of Duel Monsters again. Despite being filled with anxiety, she eagerly snatched the cards from Ignazio's hand, looking over its contents as her father walked away. The deck contained monsters of the Lightsworn archetype, including the powerful Judgment Dragon. Excited to begin her life as a duelist for real, Giovana decided to call it a night.
The following morning, Marcella taught Giovana how to duel, and later purchased a Duel Disk for her. The young lass challenged nearly anyone she saw also wearing a Duel Disk, from her sister Rosabella to random strangers on the street. Using her Lightsworn deck, Giovana eventually gained a reputation among the other children of her neighbourhood as a ruthless, fearsome duelist.
A year later, having surpassed most of the other kids in her area, she applied for the Academy of the Golden Dragon with Marcella's assistance. Being the daughter of two famous academy graduates, Giovana quickly became popular with her fellow students. As comfortable as the lass was in the spotlight, the attention she was given would ultimately be fleeting; one month later, the Academy of the Golden Dragon and Firestorm Duel School began making preparations for a Duel Monsters tournament. In this competition, students of both academies would duel to prove the supremacy of the respective school they represent. Giovana was one of many who signed up for the competition, and among the few who were actually placed on the tournament's final roster. Though many had high hopes for her, the girl was defeated a Firestorm student with a mill deck, and she became one of the first attendees to be eliminated. As Giovana lost the duel, so too did she lose the respect of her peers. Having been abandoned by all of her so-called friends only a day later, she became completely demoralized, unable to even raise her Duel Disk.
Being too broken by her defeat to do anything, she was sent to bed early. In Giovana's dreams, she saw a figure resembling Honest, one of the cards in her deck. The monster then began to speak, telling the lass to never give up and reminding her of the promise she made to Ignazio. Giovana then woke up rather early the next morning, before nearly anyone else in her class. Giovana then wandered about the desolate academy grounds, only to be caught by her teacher. The two of them discussed Duel Monsters at great length as they awaited the day ahead of them. Before classes began, Giovana abandoned her Lightsworns in favour of Cyber Dragons, only keeping the two copies of Honest from her previous deck. Though the girl's peers continued to ridicule her, Giovana ultimately rose above their remarks and continued duelling to prove her superiority.
When Giovana graduated at eighteen years of age, she was requested to meet with Donatella Valente, the Academy of the Golden Dragon's founder. Impressed by the reports she received of Giovana's immense prowess as a duelist, Donatella offered to hire the young lady as one of the academy's teachers. Honoured to even be speaking with a champion duelist of Aurelius, Giovana accepted the proposal without a second thought.
Recently, however, Donatella participated in what would be her final duel. Before a vast audience, she battled with Marcus Shao, the founder of Firestorm Duel School. In this duel, Donatella found herself severely disadvantaged. Marcus, on the other hand appeared to be capable of reading her every move, and would counter each one without fail. To make matters worse, Marcus' Dark Snake Syndrome drained both duelists' Life Points as Donatella struggled to gain the advantage. Though the duel would have resulted in a draw, Donatella succumbed to the shock of Dark Snake Syndrome before the battle could end. The tragic event caused severe controversy around Firestorm Duel School, and left the Academy of the Golden Dragon without a leader.
Following Donatella's funeral, the Academy of the Golden Dragon's teachers discussed how they would continue her legacy. They unanimously agreed that only one person could take their late leader's place, and the one way to decide who would be through Duel Monsters. The teachers then duelled amongst themselves in private, using a tournament bracket to record the results. Giovana believed she was the only one strong enough to take up the torch, and reinforced her claim by making it to the very final round. Despite all of her pride and power, she was ultimately defeated, and would be known as little more than the second-best. At first, the young woman was discouraged by her loss, but soon all she felt was self-righteous anger. Giovana then plotted to take over the academy, but she was swiftly discovered and fired as a result. Currently, she works for her father, hunting for duel spirits alongside her sister, Rosabella.

The girl's relationship with her sisters is still strained at best, as they both still strongly dislike their older sibling.
