I’m sure, if you have roleplayed before even just for a short while, that you have heard of godmoding or powerplaying, or even both. You will know that both of these terms are difficult to define exactly, and plenty of times their definitions depend on the situation. Despite this road block, I am going to attempt to describe these two terms, and why they are the death of good roleplaying. The two terms intertwine a lot, so much in fact that at times they mean the same thing. You can’t really describe one without bringing in the other. Thus I won’t try to explain each one separately, but will reference to each of them at the same time.

First and foremost, godmoding is the act of making your character invincible. If you will not let your character be beaten, or even hurt, then you are godmoding. I will say now that this depends on the situation. If your character is an elf, and you are fighting a human, than you have the right now to be beaten. Elves are superior to humans in many, many ways. In this instance, if the human is not getting hurt or beaten, then the person who plays that human character is godmoding. To determine whether someone is godmoding, and who that someone is, you must know your character very well, as well as your opponent’s character. If you know all of the characters involved in the fight well enough, then it should be easy for you to spot whether someone is godmoding.
This type of godmoding is not only performed in roleplaying, but in creating a character. If you create your character to be extremely unrealistic in terms of power, skill, and other aspects, this could also be called godmoding. This one is quite a bit more simpler for people to catch, as it’s plainly written out in the character outline. The person reading the character outline just has to know the race of the character well enough to know that something a person has written is godmoding.
For simplicity in this short essay, I’m going to name each type of godmoding. Since they really can have no meaningful names, this will be called Mode 1.

An aspect of godmoding, and here is where we entangle with powerplaying, that is quite a bit different than Mode 1, is where a person controls the actions of another player’s character without their permission. Some people call this powerplaying, some call it godmoding. I will call this type Mode 2. Mode 2 is very annoying to a lot of people, sometimes even more annoying than Mode 1. It is also, however, a lot easier to define. Mode 2 is the action on writing what another person’s character does without their consent. Simple, and this isn’t one of the most common forms of godmoding/power playing, but it has to be stated none-the-less, because this is… well… all about it. O.o

Moving on, we have Mode 3. This isn’t a very recognized form of godmoding/powerplaying, and most people probably don’t realize that it is godmoding. But it is, and I see it a lot. It’s knowing the thoughts of someone else’s character. Knowing what they are thinking, and reacting to suit their feelings, even if they have never once stated the thoughts. Mode 3 is a very subtle form of powerplaying, so you have to be careful. This actually goes under a wider category of godmoding: Knowing everything. If your character knows everything that you know, it is considered godmoding. You have to be very careful not to mix what you know up with what your character knows. If you mix them up, you are in for trouble.

There you have it. A some-what extensive guide to godmoding and powerplaying. One thing you need to know: All of the things mentioned above are against the rules. Doing them will get you into trouble.
