Some dwarven miners have discovered one of the most powerful relics of the Gods buried deep inside the mantle of the Earth - the Golden MacGuffin. The MacGuffin's power is simply that everyone wants to hold it. Only the most powerful of Gods are immune to this magic - everyone will want it, until it is destroyed, but of course nobody wants to destroy it. It was created by the evil sorceress Rose White over a millennium ago, but banished by her rival, a witch named Red Poppy, to the depths of the Earth. Now its magic has returned to the world, and all the world's armies are making for the mine as fast as possible. Knowing this, the dwarves have placed the MacGuffin on a big alter outside the mine, ready to be claimed by the first ones who come past.

In this RP, you will control one of the nations of Fantasy Pluviostan. To participate, just start posting. Make sure to include a brief description of your nation and how it attempts to retrieve the MacGuffin in your post. Also, include notes on the terrain and local people just in case the MacGuffin winds up in your lands.

Allowed: basic magic (creating fireballs and the like), general fantasy monsters (dragons, goblins), cool castles, impressive empires and masses of men. Disallowed: OP magic (spells that teleport the MacGuffin right to you, impenetrable barriers etc), OP monsters (literally summoning Gods to fight for you - although a God might grant a character some minor blessing), and generally playing unfair (give everyone a chance to get at the MacGuffin). For roleplay purposes, the winner of conflicts will be adjudicated by a simple die roll if there is any dispute (but players are encouraged to be humble concede defeat if they can see the other side would probably win).

Edit: Feel free to join in and have fun! :)

OOC: Oh that was an actual attack? I thought my elves had spent a good day marching off by then.

Ori, where are you conducting this attack? Are you in the forest or on the plain? What time of day do you think it currently is?

OOC: That's in the forest not too close to and not too far from the drow establishment. As for the time, I think it is a mid-evening, about 1700-1800, and the sun has way to go to fully set.

OOC: So let's assume this is while the elves are getting ready to depart for their night journey across the plains.

IC: The elves were still somewhat weary, but the sounds of weapons firing sent a chill of adrenaline down their spines.

"What are those explosions on the plains?" whispered one elf, despite the loud sounds around him.
"They must be trying to start a scrub fire" whispered Lachie in reply, who could hear the elf perfectly.
Carefully wrapping up the McGuffin, Lachie went about and rallied his small band of assassins.
"Stay up here in the canopy" he ordered "Conserve your energy in case we need to fight, but do not engage except on my signal."
The elves nodded and crept from tree to tree in silence, moving along the woodline away from where the explosions seemed to be concentrated.

OOC: I'll wait for Area because his orcs rushed to close-quarters battle and I'd like to see his post first.

"WHERE ARE YOU, ELVES?!" An orc shoutted, "I CAN'T SEE YOU!"

"Naturally," Krust thought, "They are hiding. As always"

The orcs continued their march until they were in the battlefield, and yet no enemy was to be seen. Was it really a battle, then? More than one orc had a headache thinking about that.

"OI, LITTLE MEN!" The same orc shouted back to their artillery support, uncaring of whether they could hear him or not, "WHERE 'RE THE BLOODY ELVES?!"

"Hold your fire!" Not without difficulty, Coldwind went out of the tank and rested to its back.

Their retreat way is cut short. He thought. Now to cut their flanks ─ but where are they? Are we really firing where we need to? And then shouted to the tank: "How much more shells you have?"
"Enough to set everything ablaze!"
"Good!"

That smell, though... Damn! The wind!

The scrub fire on the plain was raging and rapidly approaching the forest. Worst of all, the strengthening wind was blowing AT Coldwind and his group, pushing the dirigible away from him or, at least, hampering its crew efforts to reach the group. Mage was assured, however, than the retreat path to the enemy was cut. So he shouted to the orcs.

"Scatter and search for the elves! Find them! Two sacks of gold to those who find them!" And then added, addressing the tank. "Fire at your left and right, angles from 7 to 10. Set afire as much as you can!"

The elves continued creeping among the trees. They were still within relative safety but Lachie knew he would have to move quickly, not least because the elves' sensitive hearing could hear the commanders' orders to cut off their retreat.

Suddenly, one of the elves looked down and noticed a pair of orcs directly underneath them. It would have been so easy to simply drop two knives on their heads and cut them into two ... one of the "younger" elves even drew breath to pronounce a spell, but the elf behind them put their hand to the young elf's mouth. With a silent hand gesture to "stop," the group continued on.

At the front, Lachie gripped his bow, just in case. Being only a half-elf, his footsteps were the only ones that had any significant effect on the trees, occasionally making leaves fall and rustling noises inconsistent with the wind. But he hoped to move fast enough that it wouldn't matter. Avoid confrontation unless it is strictly necessary was a key part of his elite team's code.

Damn it all! Imhrys thought, as he saw a column of smoke rise throught he forest, We kill them now, or never!

"Soldiers!" Imhrys exclaimed, "A battle awaits us for sure. Ready your weapons; We are taking the MacGuffin home!"

"Yes," Dantras muttered, "By now we should be taking at least four different MacGuffins"

"Scouts, rise to the top of the trees and take the lead!" The captain said, "We shall not loose them now! And mages," Jenel and her crew looked up, very skeptical of the outcome of this battle, "Use your magic to protect us from any fire!"

This said, the army marched, each soldier following their orders. It was not long until the first alarm was called;
"ORCS!" A scout shouted, "I can see orcs ahead!"
"And not just that!" Another one exclaimed, "Look ahead, in the trees!"

This said, the latter scout prepared an arrow, directed at one of the elves in front of her.

"Some battle, finally!" Krust exclaimed, as his troops met the Dominion's. He prepared his axe, and charged against a drow; An easy kill it proved to be, as the head of the elf soon lied separate from it's body, "Is this all ya got?!"

The wind was getting stronger and clouds were darkening on the horizon. It was no good for Coldwind: his best chance to retreat was by air and dirigible was unsafe in stormy weather, especially with lightnings. And he had no other way to retreat: other unknown disturbance made teleportation from that place quite complicated.

Tanks kept firing around, some now firing explosives instead of incendiary to mow trees down to fuel the fire. The mage was still unsure of where was that disturbance, so he concentrated to pinpoint it more exactly. He knew of drows, though. His crews too ─ some explosive shells had flown towards drow ranks even without Coldwind's shout to do so.

Almost on instinct, the wood elf who had an arrow shot in their direction cast a rapid spell to deflect it. This simple act made significantly more noise, however, it did grant a glimpse of the attacker.

"Quickly!" whispered Lachie.
"Looks like dark elves" whispered another elf.
"Then we should be better than them in the trees" Lachie replied "We literally live in trees, they live in caves and have probably never seen trees before. Stay together and defend if need be, but focus on moving."
