Weather
The first great snowfall of a few days prior has coated the lands in a shining white that many would say is beauty embodied. The trees glimmer and chime with ice on their branches, and the evergreens are more vibrant and lively looking than at any other time in the year. The skies are cloudless, and with nothing to insulate the earth, temperatures drop low enough to be dangerous for long amounts of exposure at night.

A force of slightly more than one hundred strong held a steady pace upon a road that most, if not all of them, had never before set foot upon. Due to the rains that had pounded the dirt a night before, there was no cloud of dust rising in their wake to alert Ulster, the city to which they marched, of their nearing presence. The few civilians they had run into had been taken down easily enough and left restrained in a ditch, relieved of any weapons or usable 'war funds.' Not being military, however, they were not injured, and would probably be found eventually by someone else walking the road, unknowing of the threat that they followed.

Like any intelligent military unit, they were organized with foot soldiers at either end, and along the sides, serving as an expendable wall for the higher ranking individuals, and mages, within the center. It would never be put into such terms for political reasons, of course, and the soldiers themselves didn't necessarily know that they were where they were in order to serve as human shields, but it was a necessity of war that only the most cowardly questioned. In the middle were the mounted units, with the mages riding double with many of them upon Rapidash and Tauros alike, with Ponyta a little further out bearing but a single well-armored and armed rider.

In the very center, riding tallest upon her own Rapidash, Navarro by name, sat the commanding officer of the military detachment, one Guardian Kellandria, Valkyrie. Though she was technically no vassal to anyone in the country, she answered to the queen, who paid the heftiest salary she was likely to see. Kellandria didn't hold herself as a particularly expensive woman to hire the services of, as too many who needed them were often too poor to pay what others of her rank would have asked, but when the Queen had offered what she had, there was no way that she could say no. It was enough to live on for many a year afterward, and with the tentative plans and hopes she held, she would have need of it...

The Valkyrie were an elite unit under the direct control of the Queen, with the presumed military knowledge to be able to issue orders anywhere. She had decided to take a detachment directly into Lascian territory in order to strike a decisive, surprise blow on one of their supply lines to the front. Once their attack was begun, more of their soldiers could file in as reinforcements, and when Ulster and its road were taken, the supplies going to the recently captured Border Fort would slacken painfully, and make routing them so much the easier.

That was the plan, anyway.

At the moment, with Ulster completely unaware, there was no reason it couldn't go off without a hitch.

With their advance assisted by the low-key coverings of their mages, they marched on down the road and towards Ulster.

Holy freaking crap on a crust

Rinoa's eyes were wide as she watched the troop of shoulders go by. She was currently laying flat on her stomach, peering through the tall grass from behind a few bushes off the road. Angelo and Adre were on either side of her, also flat on their stomachs, with strict orders not to move. Yoji was crouching by Rinoa's head, also peering through the bushes.

*censored*. *censoredcensoredcensoredcensoredcensoredcensoredcensoredcensoredcensoredcensored*

The unit was huge to Rinoa, who was distinctly aware that she was just one girl, on girl with three low level pokemon, watching a company of the enemy head toward her home town.

Mama. Mother. Caitlin.

Her lady.

But she had no flying pokemon to send a message to them, and then nothing to write on to do the same.

What could she do?

....As Rinoa watched, a plan, most likely suicidal, formed in her mind.

It was probably going to get them all killed, but she couldn't just let the troop go by. She had to stall them.

Somehow.

"Okay guys, here's the plan." Rinoa whispered, just loud enough for her pokemon to hear.

"I want you all to stay down, keep low, try to keep yourself within the grass at all times so that they won't see you. Yoji I want you to move down the road a little, Angelo, I want you to move up the road a little, but staying int he grass, both of you. Adre, you'll go with Angelo. Angelo I want you to use Roar, as big a roar as you can. Yoji, immediately use Copycat and Roar as well. Once they've both roared, Adre I want you to use Thunder, and then Yoji, Copycat the Thunder and use it on them as well. We're trying to spook their steeds and maybe paralysis a few people. We're also trying to make it look like there are Luxrays attacking, maybe wild ones, instead of us. When they've been efficiently spooked, try to make your way back to me okay?" Rinoa would stay watching in the bushes, but would reveal herself if someone needed help.

It wasn't the best plan in the world, but it was the best Rinoa could come up with on such short notice.

"Remember, stay low. We don't want them to see you. Especially you Yoji. If they see Angelo and Adre they might think they're strays or lost farm animals. You however..." Rinoa trailed off. She didn't have to say anymore.

She reached out, carefully, and touched each of her pokemon,

"I love you guys. Let's save our home."

Their orders thus, the Pokemon paused only momentarily at the words of encouragement and deepest of affection. They hadn't known her long, hardly knew her at all really, but for her to say that to them, to mean it, as they could well feel, was a powerful realization, and it was a heartening one. From that they drew courage, and warmth to stay their hearts against the numbers they knew lay beyond that hazy shroud. There were Pokemon, too, they knew, more than merely those which they could see.

But in a flash they had disappeared into the grasses, Adre and Angelo darting off in one direction, and Yojimbo soloing in the other direction. It was a long moment, one that was as choked with the fear of the unknown and seconds that felt like minutes as Rinoa was likely to find for the rest of the time she was a participant in the war. It had a tendency to that to people, warp their sense of time, age them faster than it ought.

Finally, however, the roars came. First one, and then the other echoed through the air, to both of their credit not sounding like a bark, or even necessarily canine in nature. Just threatening, and very angry.

The effect was more or less instantaneous, and had footmen scrambling to get away from the mounted units as their Pokemon bucked and kicked before their riders could get them under control. Only the commander's steed didn't flinch, but he did peer about himself in a most dissatisfied manner. Clearly he expected better. The others didn't notice though as their heretofore lax steeds were reigned back under control. They hadn't been prepared for such at all, had actually all been rather relaxed as they strolled around, believing themselves more-or-less invisible to the rest of the world.

There were a few groans of pain from men and Pokemon who had not quite managed to get out of the way fast enough, but if there were any dead there was no indication of it. Their progress had been halted, however.

Without warning, two bolts of electricity, as big around as Rinoa herself was, arched from the sky and struck the ground amidst the soldiers, sending several flying from each bolt. The smell of ozone and cooked meat seemed to fill the air immediately, and there were far more groans and moans of pain, both curable and incurable, floating from the advance unit. Shouts went up, calling for healers or for scouts, and the woman in charge reigned her own Pokemon in from where he had started at the sound and the flash, and glared out at the surroundings calculatingly.

At one point her gaze even swept over Rinoa's hiding point, but it didn't falter or seem to acknowledge her.

Already Rinoa had managed to kill several of the soldiers, probably temporarily paralyze or wound others, until the healers got to them, and the battle had yet to even officially begun.

But because of the attacks, particularly for poor Yojimbo, her Pokemon were probably drained, barring Angelo. Yojimbo had fought to copy two completely different techniques over a great distance, one of great power. He was surely on his way back, but he would likely be too tired to contribute much more. As Rinoa watched, foot soldiers began to fan out from the group, and the spell that seemed to be keeping them invisible fell at the same time as the mages began to divert their power to other things.

Like scrying for Pokemon, or helping the scouts who were now searching for the origins. The sounds and flashes of Pokeorbs opening also boded ill, but it was far too late to back out now.

Rinoa, still crouching in the grass behind the bushes, watched the mayhem that came about from her very hard working pokemon. It seemed the plan was workng, so far. Better than she had hoped for really. Chaos had insued, even if only briefly, and the two thunders along with the roars had combined to kill off a small number of their soldiers.

Every little bit helped after all.

But now two of her pokemon at least were very tired. She couldn't blame them, especially Yoji, having accomplished two very hard copycats to such perfection. They needed rest. They had done their part in the battle.

When her pokemon returned to her, she would return Yoji and Adre to their orbs (no matter how much they might object to it) after whispered words of praise, for well deserved rest. Angelo would stay out with her for backup.

Then she and Angelo, trying to remain as much within the tall grass as possible, would crouch and crawl their way back away from the road, though Rinoa would try and keep her eyes and ears open for possible soldiers or pokemon following her.

They needed to try and find a place where she couldn't be surrounded. Or at least get far enough away that when peoople did eventually find her, she could try and pick them off one by one, rather than have it be 60 against herself and Angelo.

She did take out her staff however, keeping it in one hand, along the ground as she crawled. If she found some legs, she could use the staff to cut them off.

Or at least trip them up. Assuming she didn't get pummeled full of arrows or something in the process. And of course, there was always Angelo's flame thrower too, which could wreak havoc for all int eh grasslands. But that would be saved as a last resort.

The three of them managed to return ahead of the slowly advancing scouts, slipping just through the grass in a way that didn't let it move too much. They reached her eventually though, Yojimbo more slowly than the rest, and accepted the reassignment to their Pokeorbs with about as much ease as Rinoa had expected. In Yojimbo's eyes, in particular though, there was true exhaustion, and there was no guarantee that he wouldn't have managed to stay awake much longer even if he had wanted to.

Angelo was in good form, however, and proved good at predicting how the scouts would move, helping to lead Rinoa backwards towards a slowly sloping hill that would help to hide her, at least long enough to hopefully formulate a plan. There was a smattering of rocks down in the middle of it, probably having been rolled down there at some point in the far past so that they were covered in moss, and a couple of trees. It would be decent enough cover, if she used it right.

One scout in particular, though, seemed to be on an invisible trail towards her. He wasn't truly following her, but he was remaining eerily close. He was armed with a lance, wickedly sharp by the look of it, and he looked at least somewhat experienced with combat. His face was dark and craggy, and he seemed well-muscled from training with his weapons. A Spearow was perched on his shoulder, thankfully not up and about searching from the air.

Just as Rinoa reached the rocks and trees, she felt a human warmth bump into her back, one that shot up, nearly into visible range of the guard, then fell back down with a soft thump and a murmured curse.

"Milady Rinoa?" The thick accent was familiar, though just as unplaceable as ever, particularly after having just come from his house, and Langley's head popped up from the side, much to Angelo's fortunately silent delight. "What is going on?" His eyes were wide, slightly frightened, and a little bit harried, and his hair seemed slightly more out of place than it had earlier, and there were twigs in his ponytail.

Whether he knew what was going on or not, he had definitely been keeping low.

Rinoa's reflexes were instantaneous. The moment she felt him she reached up, tried to grab him by his collar, and pull him chest down to the ground, grabbing his wrists to immobilize him.And she tried to do it all as silently as possible.

When she realized who it was however, she quickly let him up, though kept a hand on him to keep him staying low.

"Sorry" She murmured, her eyes not on him but on their surroundings, particularly on the man that seemed to be following them. She began to move them behind the trees and rocks, hoping for better cover.

"Lascian soldiers. They must have come to invade Ulster. Surprise attack." She explained in a low voice as they moved.

If they got behind the cover in time she would glance at him, pinning him with her gaze.

"Listen to me carefully. This is what I need you to do. First I need you to see if you can heal my Riolu and my Mareep." she pressed their pokeorbs into his hands.

"Then I need you to get to Ulster, and warn the Lady Adair of the Lascian troop. If you can't get in to see her, say that Rinoa Lockheart sent you." That should get him in to see someone at least.

"I'll try to buy you time to escape. You have a pokemon right? What is it?" She glanced around the tree and at their surroundings, checking to see how much farther away the soldier was, Angelo crouched at her heels.

Coughing and choking as quietly as possible on a bit of grass that had somehow managed to work its way down his throat as he sat up and tried his best to pay attention to what Rinoa was explaining. It was very important. As Rinoa moved backwards, he scrambled back as well, being careful not to step on Angelo's tail or anything similar. It would be absolutely fatal to make the poor little pup yelp and draw attention to them.

He seemed bewildered for a moment, his eyes reflecting confusion, fear, and some small amount of panic, before he blinked and shook his head slightly, getting some of it under control.
"You mea-" He stopped abruptly and lowered his voice a little, looked frightendly sheepish. "You mean those are soldiers!? And they're marching to Ulster!?" He looked visibly on edge.

"That's...that's...how? What are they-" Langley cut himself off abruptly and shook his head, drawing himself up momentarily before throwing himself back to the ground again, looking as if he were mentally berating himself. "Your Pokemon, your Pokemon..."

Settling down on his hands and knees, he released both tired Pokemon onto the grass, wincing at the sound of their summoning, and immediately began looking them over. Almost immediately, his face fell. "They are not injured, I'm afraid..." He looked up apologetically at her, truly sorry, but still suffering from obvious anxiety. "I can give them something to make them perk up a little bit, but it is very bitter and they will not like it..."

As Langley spoke, albeit quickly, the soldier who seemed to be most on their trail was slowly growing closer, now merely some 20 meters away. He hadn't seen them yet, but it was almost guaranteed that when Langley moved to leave he would spot him. Fortunately the soldiers had spread out far enough now that he was the only one in sight, but if he made a sound, unless it were very quiet, others would hear him and come running...

Rinoa glanced back at the hermit, then down at her pokemon. She winced a little. She hate that her pokemon would need to take a bitter medicine, but right now, they're full health was needed. She couldn't afford to coddle them.

But she could help a little with the taste.

"I'm sorry guys, but you'll need to take the medicine." She murmured softly to her tired pokemon. Yoji didn't look like he minded to much, he wanted to get back into the battle anyway, and hated the fact that he was to weak right now to be much use. Adre however, the bit of a spoiled princess that she was, had her face screwed up at just the smell of it.

Reaching into her sack, she pulled out an apple and a bit of cheese. The apple she quickly chopped in half, and set it on the ground for Yoji and Adre respectively.

"Eat that after the medicine. It will help with the taste." She murmured to them, stroking each of them,

"Thanks for hanging in there for me." The cheese she gave to Angelo, so he wouldn't feel left out.

She then went back to watching the soldier who was still coming closer. She needed to take him and that Spearow out, but without too much commotion. She didn't want more soldiers coming just yet.

Once Adre had finished the medicine and her apple half, she would have the sheep come up to her. Peering out from their cover, she would wait until the man was close enough, then she would tell Adre to use Thunder Wave on him. Hopefully the thunderwave would go through his bird too, sitting on his shoulder. If not, Rinoa would have Adre use Shock wave on the bird until it had fainted. Once the man was paralyzed and the bird fainted, Rinoa would come out and quickly slit the man's throat with her bladed staff.

It was war after all. And there was not time to be squeamish about killing a man.

Once he was dead, Rinoa would quickly riffle through his things, and use the Spearow's pokeorb to recall the bird. She would then, with the help of Yoji, pull the dead man back to their cover. Once they were hidden again, she would go through all his things, taking whatever there was of value. His weapons, his pokeorbs, his money, etc. These were spoils of war after all, and the King was quite insistent on such things being turned over, to continue a profit that would help fund the war.

Though really, Rinoa didn't want A. for that weapon to be used against her someday, B. for his pokemon to be forever trapped in their orbs, and C. to let anything good go to waste.

That was the plan anyway, she'd have to see how well it worked.

"Stay here, stay low, and stay silent." She whispered, well ordered, to Langley after he had given her pokemon the medicine.

When the Pokemon looked as if they had more-or-less agreed to the deal with the added condition of getting extra food, Langley produced two small leaves from a pocket of his breaches. They smelled as bitter as he had assured them they would taste, even bad enough that he had to wrinkle his nose a little bit himself. With the security of the fairly sweet apple to taste afterwards, though, the Pokemon downed the little bits of semi-dry greenery.

Something in them, probably a chemical, quite possibly a very low strength poison, charged through their bloodstreams, delivering something, not quite oxygen, to their muscles and ligaments and minds, sharpening them and quickening them again, waking them up quite efficiently. In a dosage this small it wasn't at all harmful, just not very tasty, and had the immediate side effect of the equivalent of a cup or two of freshly brewed coffee.

Probably about as tasty, too, given that most could afford only the lowest quality of beans and absolutely nothing else to put in it. But like this stuff, it was meant to serve as a pick-me-up.

They downed the apples quickly enough, and that seemed to take the edge off of the taste, if not their returned vigor, and as Rinoa began to explain the plan, Adremmelech sidled up to her almost as she normally would have otherwise. There was still a slightly brackish taste on her tongue, after all.

They were simple enough orders, and the lot of them huddled down behind their cover, waiting for the man to come near enough that there would be no chance of the bird escaping.

They were long and tense moments, paticularly with Langley fidgeting nervously behind all of them. Clearly such harrowing situations were not his cup of tea.

Eventually, almost without even any warning for Rinoa and the rest, a charge of electricity rippled over Adremmelech's fur, starting from her tail and making its way forward like a wave, until it leaped off of her body and shot through the air in a slowly spreading and dispersing wave of energy. The man's mouth opened and he drew his weapon back, recognition flashing in his eyes just before the electricity struck him and dropped him to the ground.

His bird was just a little bit quicker.

Airborne when the wave hit, he was free of the effects of the charge, and he crowed what could only be a very angry curse at the lot of them before taking to the sky. Not in any particular direction, but merely up. Out of range of the Electric-type and anything else the little group might have. It didn't stop the Mareep from trying though, but after two unsuccessful lightning strikes, the bird was high enough that it could begin flying back towards the main group.

Apparently he knew that his Keeper was a lost cause.

Even if he was flying off to warn the others, it still afforded Rinoa time to finish the deed in relation to his Keeper. Her blade, held steady enough in her hands to strike a blade of fear into the man's heart briefly, even before the blade sliced through the skin of his neck, was doused for the first time in the blood of the guilty. It spurted awkwardly from the thin slit in his throat, not gushing, but clearly trying to explore the new paths it could take, but it quickly drained to merely a slow pulsing as the light left his eyes and the paralysis changed to a more natural one, brought about more quickly by the electricity.

There were two Pokeorbs, she found, as she went through his meager personal belongings. One of them still had something in it, though she had no idea what, and the other was likely Spearow's, though it was too far away to be of any good now. There was a small purse with a little more than a hundred in gold, and a scrap of parchment with a scribble of what could have been text, but taken up more prominently with what appeared to be a child's drawing. Two somethings vaguely human, and a scrawny looking chicken-thing that could have been any bird, was most likely the Spearow. Its origin was such that Rinoa could only wonder.

He seemed to have little else on him, probably due to his being merely a grunt in the war effort. Poor fellow, merely doing his duty. But then, Rinoa was merely doing hers.

Behind her, Langley's eyes were wide and he sat very very still among the rocks, perhaps seeing his bright young friend in a dark new light. Not that there was any conflict over who he wanted to help or anything, just a sense of awe at her...natural ability. At the chance of her keeping the war going in their favor. This was the sort of person they needed more of, and having her alone and unsupported out here in the middle of nowhere was a waste.

Rinoa stuffed the loot into her sack and strapped the polearm to her back. She didn't have time to allow herself the luxury of being traumatized, thus she didn't think about her first kill.

She would hopefully have time to think about and break down later. And if she didn't, well, it would probably mean she wasn't able to have thoughts at all.

And if that's became the case, than she wouldn't have to worry about it anyway.

What she DID worry about was the fact that that damn Spearow got away. Which meant she only had so much time to set up the next strategy before soldiers came a-look'n.

"Langley, here's what you have to do." Rinoa said softly but strongly, turning to him and staring right into his eyes.

"I'm going to create a diversion. When I say so, I want you to stay low, keep down, and make your way as fast as you can without standing up back toward Ulster. Get to Lady Adair, and tell her that there are Lascian troops here, a little less than one hundred. Tell her she needs to send troops now, and that I'll do what I can to hold them off. If no one will let you in, use my name, Rinoa Lockheart. If they still don't let you in, find Leena and Sarah Lockheart. Tell them Rin-rin sent you. They'll take it from there." She swallowed then, her throat closing for a moment when she thought of her mothers.

She might never see them again, but damn it, she would make sure they and her hometown survived this.

When she was sure Langley had his instructions, she turned to her pokemon,

"Adre, I need you to use Sand-attack, as much as you can, and Yoji, I need you to Copycat her and use sand attack as well. Raise up a huge dust cloud. While they're doing that Angelo, I want you to use Sunny Day, and then use Ember on the grass around this tree." She tapped one of the trees they were nearby.

"I think about two or three ember attacks should start a good blaze. THe sand in the air should keep the fire from spreading to far to quickly, but also capture the attention of the soldiers." She glanced back at Langley, "That's when you make your move. At the same time we'll be going in the opposite direction, but not to far, though we'll try to stay hidden too."

She was hoping that she could pick off a few soldiers during the confusion of the sand and the fire, when they came to check it out. They would have their bearing, the soldiers, in theory, would not.

Taking a deep breath, Rinoa let it out slowly, then nodded.

"Let's do this."

Azrael, deciding that the voice was strongly hinting at him to go, followed the lightning. Divine intervention indeed; perhaps this voice was not his own, but that of the gods. If they had rules against directly ordering people, it would explain the somewhat cryptic words. Or if both voices melded into one, it would explain how it said things he’d only subconsciously realised… like how strange it was that there were few people here.

And it helped identify things he might not have realised so quickly otherwise.

Lascian soldiers, he thought numbly as he walked, staring. Here. Now.

Had they lost at the Lascian Border Fort, and worse, the Lascians took Caledonia’s?

It was his duty to warn Ulster, he thought, but there was someone fighting against them. Whoever it was had to be Caledonian, and someone they didn’t want to lose – but they had to be horribly outnumbered, and however much help Azrael could provide might help keep them alive. Which would be more useful: moving forward to save what might be one person, or warning Ulster and trying to save the entire city?

The answer, Azrael thought, stopping, is obvious. However… He took a coin from his pouch and flipped it, catching it easily. Heads, I return; tails, and I move forward. Gods, guide me.

…Tails.

He returned the coin to his pouch, safely securing it, and drew his longsword. Though he considered using his buckler in the normal, non-identification fashion, he removed his pokéorb from his belt instead.

He didn’t know Quarry well, but Lady Feidhelm wouldn’t give him a troublesome pokémon, surely. He didn’t know its moves, either, though he was certain it would know many of the rock-type TMs that he’d memorised.

Against greater numbers, some confusion on their part would be good.

He just hoped it wouldn’t work against those he was supposed to be helping.

Quarry!” he murmured as he threw the pokéorb to the ground to release his pokémon. He’d have to be quick about this, he realised, re-attaching the orb to his belt. He’d already drawn attention, surely. “Sandstorm,” he said, as quickly and clearly as he could. “Hide in it and move toward the troops,”—he pointed, in case Quarry couldn’t see—“Stealth Rock in the middle of the Lascians, and keep moving. You’re on your own. Crush the Lascian soldiers as you will. Do not harm Caledonians,” he added, remembering that there was one there already. “Go.

Azrael himself would not be idle while his pokémon, hopefully, wreaked havoc on the enemy. Instead he would move into the grass, trying to get away from the sandstorm himself, and trying to be stealthy. Blue might not have been the best colour for it, but it wasn’t bright blue. From there, he wasn’t quite sure what he’d do, as he’d have to think on the spot. He’d remain aware of his surroundings as possible, of course, and try to remain a safe distance from the contingent so he could pick off individual Lascians. Rather than facing them directly, he’d try to attack unexpectedly, with, hopefully, a fatal blow.

His hand was surprisingly steady as he steeled himself for a kill. No—not surprisingly, as he’d trained his whole life for this; he was a vassal now, a soldier. 'The first kill is the hardest,' he remembered, but 'It gets easier. Very quickly.' And he’d already killed, hadn’t he? 'Men bleed like tauros, women like miltank, and children like mareep. They all bleed the same.'

He hoped to meet up with whatever Caledonian was currently working at them, but also hoped they wouldn’t attack each other on sight. But, first priority... get out of the sandstorm, kill Lascians one by one, and stay alive.

Lucianna was calm. The day was nice. Her mood was upbeat. Fulfilment was nice. She had re-released her Bulbasaur again, and he stood high and proud as he could, enjoying the pleasant conditions beside his Keeper's leg. She had learned from her previous mistake, now walking slowly enough for him to trot beside her. The pair were feeling quite innocent in their thoughts, too, none of this rubbish about war or fighting; Luci hoped Vigeo wouldn't ever think of war, whilst Vigeo hoped he would get some food soon.

Further along the way, Luci had grown to find the scenery and lack of Pokemon boring, so she sent out both of her other Pokemon, and retrieved her Pokepedia from the satchel. Of course, she brushed her polearm in bringing the bag down, and being reminded of its presence still sent a jolt of excitement down her spine. She was eager to learn how to use it, to find out how best suited her holding it, and what way she should swing to strike. Perhaps she should've stopped now, and prepared herself to use it. Perhaps didn't happen, though, for she was moreso anxious to get to Ulster, and find herself a Ponyta!

Acker looked around his bright surroundings, raising a gloved fist to his eyes. It was undeniably bright, and he had been cramped in that ball since first thing this morning, resulting in the sunlight needing shading. Hell, even if it had been murky he would've needed to do it. Lacrima, however, insisted on one-upping the fighting type, and though the light stung his irises, he wouldn't dare show it, walking blindly ahead, as though he knew where the quartet actually intended to go. He kept only his bone close by, and staying independent to the others, showed off his lonesome nature for all its worth.

Luci now had the Pokepedia open, flicking through to the pages she had already used, and probably use again and again, and bookmarked them with folded edges. First was Bulbasaur's. Apparently Vigeo should know a few powerful techniques already, and though Lucianna couldn't pronounce many of them, she knew the word "strong" when she saw it, so she knew that solarbeam, or "sul Ah-rb am" as she failed to pronounce it would be powerful. "Jeejah drink" seemed interesting too, and later on, she found something called "ingerin" also promising. She would one day learn how to do something with them, but since Vigeo wasn't up to fighting yet, she hoped Acker's and Lacrima's moves would be easier on the tongue.

The Hitmonchan's page looked a damn sight more promising. At first she saw about twenty moves all ending in the same word, one which she didn't know how to pronounce. But a bit of playing around verbally, and looking at Acker himself gave her the answer. It wasn't punketh or pawnuk, it was punch. As in smacking with a fist punch. That made so much sense now, and seeing as most of the words infront were simple, she was quickly aware of lots of moves the Pokemon knew. Drain Punch, which made her go back to the Bulbasaur, and discover it was actually "Jeejah Drain" was one move, Ice Punch another, and she tried to keep note of them all.

And lastly there was Cubone. His was the most interesting and yet simple of the group. He knew some 10 letter word Luci skipped immediately, Bone Club, Dig, something to do with the tail which was marked as not doing damage, and a few others which didn't catch her interest as much. She went back to the first move she'd seen, since it was very powerful. Earthquake? Well "ear" seemed obvious, though the fqu confused Lucianna. and-

CREEEEEEEEZZZZZZAAEEEEEEESSSSH!

Holy crap. Lucianna's spine snapped straight, and as she looked up from her book, she discovered what was happening. Or at least, she saw it, though she wasn't exactly sure what it was she observed. A hundred or so people, all wearing armour and carrying weapons, running around and talking in a slight frenzy. They were approaching Ulster, too, which Luci now noticed was actually nearby. Talk about everything happening at once!

The crashes of thunder couldn't have been friendly to the soldiers. But then, the soldiers didn't look friendly in of themselves. They were donning a uniform Luci had never seen in Eblana or Ferndown, and as Caledonian guards and soldiers all wore similar getups, this had to spell that they were Lascians. Well that was one question answered. Lascians were human. A second was resolved as she saw several mounted on Rapidash. They did have Pokemon. And if what she heard about war was true, which it had to be; overheard information was always the most reliable, then these men and women would be attempting to attack Ulster, on this sunny day.

Pathetic Fallacy it ain't.

Something deep down in Lucianna's stomach said she couldn't let that happen. She looked on without hope though... There were many times more of them than her, and it was at that point she remembered the bolt of electric. She wasn't alone. Well that inspired confidence, perhaps too much, and the girl looked on, formulating a plan as best as she could. Someone else was trying to stop these people getting to Ulster, and they were doing it as if this had been a Keeper fight! No long was this a potential war to the little lady; this was a Pokemon battle! She could ask her Pokemon to use moves, rather than have herself attempt murder... And they were only going to knock the opponents out...

"Acker, Vigeo, Lacrima." she started. All three turned to look at her, eyes wide with concern, confusion and expectancy respectively. The Hitmonchan was aware of what this could mean, the Bulbasaur wasn't, and the Cubone was prepared for it. "We've go'a do som'in', righ'?" Acker and Lacrima nodded, whilst Vigeo simply shook his head around confusedly. "Noo... Ah g'ess ye cannae... So I'll return ye 'n' we'll see'a soon Vigeo!" she was keeping the happy face on for herself as much as the plant, pulling out his orb and retreating him into it. He would be safe. Now. Time for war.

"Ye both look tae know w'a's comin', an' I love ye for bein' so co-op'rative... But we'll only be battlin' tae knock'em ou', righ'?" Acker was happy with these terms, or as happy as he could be. And Lacrima was indifferent to the news that he would be fighting for mere unconsciousness. It apparently didn't concern Lucianna that the opponent would be less restricted, so why should it him? "So now work wi'me 'ere, as readin's never b'n a s'rong poin'... But do you know some'at called... Ear... fu wake? Earve... Earth... wake?" Lacrima nodded, taking his keeper's newbie ability on the chin. It wasn't difficult to see she meant Earthquake. And even if she didn't know how to use her Q's, he knew how to unleash hell. "Try to aim it almos' all atta main lo'a 'em... We wanna wreak 'avoc! An' Acker, friend, now'sa perfect time to puttat Rock Slide we did togetha' in'a practise. Whaddya say?" He was very much sombre for the fighting, but he was willing to work with it. And that was all that was needed. "But no'et. Atta' now 'n' 'e'll lose us advan'age... Ge' low, an'en all move t'cover. An' toge'a! Folla me! Once yerr in a good spot, an' ready, get tae atta'in'!

And with that Lucianna lowered herself to a prone position, unsheathing a dagger incase need be, and looked around for a rock or grove of trees which she could move to without exposing herself. Acker and Lacrima(For all it was worth) got down too. Acker would look for rocks to use, and if he couldn't find any, he would use some from the aftermath of the Cubone's Earthquake.

Just a Pokemon battle.

Quarry, as quickly as so enormous a Pokemon could, slunk down into the grass to try to avoid being spotted by the wandering scouts, and slithered along through the grasses that could only partly cover his expansive mass. As he moved, the winds began to swirl about him, and a gentle golden veil began to materialize, comprised of sand particles both seemingly magicked from the air and kicked up partially from the dirt left overturned in the massive snake's wake.

As the pillar of spiraling sand moved closer and grew steadily more opaque, it did, of course, begin to draw attention. The scouts scouring the fields for the starters of the earlier bolts of lightning raised the alarm first, and back at the main contingent the men and women took immediate attention. Flashes of light signified the release of yet more Pokemon, and before the pillar, and the Onix, could get too close, several streams of water leaped from Pokemon that Azrael was too far away to see from, and struck the spiraling sands.

The roar from within signified that at least some of it had gone through, but the splash and rain of water around it also signified that the sand was deflecting much of the water, sparing the Onix inside from the pain that it could potentially suffer from it. Quickly, though, the sand began to form clumps as it clung to each other, dropping to the ground with wet plopping noises, exposing Onix more and more to its dangers.

With another roar of pain, this time from being struck head on with a burst of water to one of the larger rocks in his chest, the Onix dropped back down to the ground, the water shooting over him. Now a smaller target, he continued barreling towards the group of soldiers.

Not hindered by the difficulties posed by such a large Pokemon, Lucianna's numbers had little trouble in hiding themselves among the grasses and proceeding at a slow, pleasantly steady pace towards the guardsmen. Lucianna herself was the slowest of the lot, however, as humans just weren't meant to crawl quickly along the ground, and she was quite swiftly passed up by her Pokemon who pulled ahead and towards their objective with ease.

Lacrima, in particular, did well in keeping himself hidden among the dirt. It was his home, his turf, and he knew how to use it to his advantage in order to move both quickly and silently. Acker wasn't quite so quick on his knees and hands, but he got there eventually. As he didn't need to be so close up, he stopped a little bit sooner and made ready his projectiles, remaining huddled in the grass until the signal came...

...a signal that made itself known almost immediately, and in a form that was absolutely unmistakable.

Ahead of them, the ground rumbled, shaking them up through their bones and rattling about their skulls and making their teeth chatter annoyingly together. The effect was most noticeable though among the enemy, and once more (the first time for the newer ones gathered at the war zone), their mounts reared and lashed out with their hooves, hitting fewer of the soldiers now that they were spread out, but frightening them enough to scatter a little bit regardless.

Being so small as he was, however, Lacrima's attack didn't so much damage any of them, though there were several screams of pain as feet lodged themselves into crevices and ankles or legs were twisted and broken, hobbling several of their number. Efficiently it made them easier targets for Acker as he bolted upright, rocks loaded into his arms, and narrowed his eyes, sighting on a couple of the humans hobbling amongst the others, and began to pitch the rocks at them.

As the rain of stones commenced, so too did grunts, groans, and the occasional thump of a body striking the ground.

Despite what was probably a current evaluation of Langley as a spaz, he seemed to take in her orders quickly enough, and he nodded understanding of them, not speaking. Perhaps he was just the sort who worked better under pressure than he did under good circumstances. Though his performance under normal circumstances had, heretofore, been spazzy enough to indicate that he should do remarkably well under the sort of pressure that an army marching to Ulster would have dictated.

It was, after all, just of the tiniest little bit of importance.

He sat up on his knees, then propped one foot on the ground and balanced with his hands, ready to leap into running action at a moment's notice.

And then the ground began to shake. From their distance it was minor, but the widening of Langley's eyes only confirmed that Rinoa wasn't the only one to have never experienced even a minor earthquake in this area. Something else was causing it, and the ensuing sounds of disorder from what was the section of the road where the enemy stood clearly dictated it wasn't going well for them.

It seemed almost too good to be a random occurrence, unless the gods were merely that much on their side.

Adremmelech and Yojimbo nodded at her, a single nod each, and turned their backs to the area in which they had been standing, over the rocks and among the trees, their paws digging into the ground and kicking it up into the air. It wasn't quite what Rinoa had in mind, most likely, as the ground had yet to dry completely from the rains of the day before. It was thick and not prone to crumbling, and certainly not what one would call dusty, but it did fly, and some of it shattered and spread a bit, but nothing like a cloud of dust, which hung around in the air.

It still looked pretty funny though.

At the same time, Angelo hunkered down and took a deep breath, his tail stilling from where it had previously been wagging, and narrowed his eyes at the tree that was to become his kindling. Eyes closing briefly, they flashed open again and a low growl escaped his little jaws, and above them the sun began to shine a little bit hotter, beating down on them with an unnatural fury. Fortunately, it also began to dry the topsoil a little bit faster, and the efforts of the other two slowly improved as well.

The leaves of the tree grew a little bit lighter with the reflected light, and then a deeper green as they began to drink it up the sunlight and turn it into energy for themselves.

It was at that point that the little pup summoned up the flame from deep within him, and the tongue of blazing red and orange leaped forward to encompass the tree in its entirety, almost, climbing up the branches and engulfing the leaves in a single blaze.

He kept it up, despite the almost blistering heat on his comrades, until the flames changed color slightly and began to burn a little bit taller.

They had caught on.

Panting hard, he ceased the belching of flame and looked back at Rinoa for encouragement and happy words in the brief time before the four of them were on the move. Simultaneously, Langley produced a set of three leaves from a pocket and, squishing them together into a ball, hurled them at the flames before dashing as quickly, and as lowly, as he could through the grass towards Ulster.

The flames drew immediate attention, despite the rumbling of the earth earlier, and the few soldiers that Rinoa could see in the field, a total of three now, with their Pokemon all out, turned towards the pillar of flame, now spewing thick black smoke, courtesy of Langley's leaves. From nearest to furthest, the Pokemon with them were a turtle of some sort, with a Pidgeotto, a Hoppip, and a set of three Zubat, all of which were keeping near their respective owners as they converged. In that same order, the soldiers were equipped with a sword, a shortbow, already knocked with an arrow, and another sword, this one longer than the first.

Rinoa let out a slight gasp as the ground began to shake, and almost lost her balance. But she managed to keep it, mostly because she was crouched close to the ground anyway. She looked over quickly toward where the main group was, her ears perking up when she heard more shouts of the chaos the minor earthquake had created.

Where the gods smiling down upon her? Was she just incredibly lucky? Or were there other Caledonians in the grasses like herself, working against all odds to save Ulster?

She sent up a silent prayer to whatever god that may be listening that it was at least one of those three things, if not them all, before they got their own plans underway.

Fire, dust, sunlight, shouts. All of this happened in a fury of activity, and soon the area was flaming high. As Rinoa peered through the flames and smoke, she saw three soldiers heading her way, each with high leveled pokemon.

Gesturing to her pokemon, she positioned themselves on the opposite side of the flames, so that, hopefully, it would slow them down.

"Yoji and Adre, you two are a team again. Adre, when they get close enough I want you to use Thunder Wave on the Warturtle and the Pidgeotto. Yoji, Copycat her and use Thunder Wave on them as well. When both of them have been paralyzed, Yoji I want you to switch to the Zubat, and work on Thunderwaving them. Adre I want you to use Shockwave on the Warturtle first, and then on the Pidgeotto, which ever you can attack, though more focus on the Warturtle." Rinoa spoke calmly as she watched the soldiers approach, reaching up and taking down her metal bladed staff, standing at the ready.

"Angelo, I want you to enter the flames, then use Flamethrower on the soldier with the bow. Try to set his bow on fire. Then immediately come back to me. Our job will be to attack any pokemon or soldiers that manage to get on this side of the fire, alright? Flamethrower them, or use a Crunch Flamethrower combination if you can." Going into the flames shouldn't hurt Angelo that much, and would in fact make him stronger thanks to Flash Fire. Between that and Sunny Day, Angelo's fire attacks would be very very strong.

Rinoa herself would do as she said. Pokemon or soldiers, if they managed to make on this side of the fire, she would attack.

"For Ulster and Adair." She murmured, gripping her staff tight.

Azrael barely paid attention to Quarry’s predicament, as he’d meant it when he said Quarry was on his own. Hopefully Quarry could consider reusing Sandstorm if it would help, or possibly Rock Polish while moving if possible—pokémon were surely capable of thought, especially using themselves effectively in battle. He kept looking around, wary even though he had yet to come across any soldiers. They would have pokémon, but he didn’t have any with him right now. That would be troublesome. But Quarry was distracting the enemy right now, and that’s what his purpose was; maybe it would attract attention, too, but there was no reason for them to think it was anything more than a pokémon battle.

Then he saw the pillar of smoke and fire.

It had to mean something, he figured, and was probably the Caledonian defender, but for what? Azrael had no idea, but he could see Lascians converging on that spot. Lascians, and their pokémon. It was likely that the person who caused it would flee, after attracting so much attention, but if not… they could be horribly outnumbered, with the pokémon. So he decided he’d go in that direction as well, still prepared for any opportunity to surprise-attack a human enemy. If they were intent enough, they might not notice his approach.

Azrael himself realised he might be subject to the same thoughts from a Lascian, so he still tried to keep a note on his surroundings. If a Lascian soldier had noticed him, he’d need to attack them instead, and keep moving later… but now he had a real destination, and maybe something would come of it. He'd be careful, keeping a short distance away if he didn't have any enemies to strike down, and see if there was a way to safely get the ally's attention if there was, indeed, an ally.
