Tea Party Origins

I wonder if current supporters know that the original tea party happened because a bunch of drunks were worried the Great Britain was limiting their sugar and thereby limiting the amount of rum they could make.

I had heard that one before, but I didn't/don't know if it's correct.

Maybe I'll look I up...

What I've discovered:

about

In the years following the French and Indian War, the British government increasingly sought ways to alleviate the financial burden caused by the conflict. Assessing methods for generating funds, it was decided to levy new taxes on the American colonies with the goal of offsetting some of the cost for their defense. The first of these, the Sugar Act of 1764, was quickly met by outcries from colonial leaders who claimed "taxation without representation," as they had no members of Parliament to represent their interests.

The following year, Parliament passed the Stamp Act which called for tax stamps to be placed on all paper goods sold in the colonies. The first attempt to apply a direct tax to the colonies, the Stamp Act was met with widespread protests in North America.

A Canadian's interpretation:

So the tax on sugar did not trigger the Tea Party, but it DID lead to bad feelings, then the Stamp Act started the protests. (Oddly enough, across all of North America, INCLUDING Canada.) The Tax on Tea came after that, when the British Parliament was beginning to realize they'd gone too far. It was supposed to ease tensions, as the overall effect was to lower prices.

Obviously it didn't work.

Our local TP members are a bunch of white folks that think there is a conspiracy behind every tree. I went to two meetins and I was amazed by the racial slurs re Obama, stupidity and disorganization.

I did not make up my information. I received it from a documentary on the American History Channel.

Hmmm - Colo, that sounds more authoritative than my source.

Now you've got me curious.

Maybe I should dig deeper...
