Over the last year, Discord has become the main form of off-site communication. Discord comes with a lot of features that did not exist with previous forums. Overall, how do you feel about discord? Any features of skype, msn, or IRC that you miss? How has it impacted gameplay or your region? |

I feel that Discord has been a positive addition to NationStates gameplay. I've mostly used Skype for personal, real life purposes and very close online friends. So, when I first started raiding in 2015, I hesitated to get involved just because of the Skype requirement, and I'm sure that many have also felt the same way. With Discord, you don't have to add a single person to your contacts in order to get started with joining servers. Discord also has many useful features, such as being able to set a different nickname for each server you're in, giving people different permissions and appearance based on roles, and high quality voice chat channels beyond the one low quality "group call" that Skype provided. I wouldn't say that there's any features of Skype that I miss personally, but I know many miss video chatting, though that isn't useful for NationStates purposes. Discord has impacted gameplay by allowing folks easy communication to those who they are not necessarily intending to work with, such as defenders joining raiding servers, and vice versa, things that wouldn't necessarily be possible without Discord.

Discord is used as a planning page for raiding as well as just discussion. It is necessary for a good raiding society but people also like to use It for the purpose of pure joy in communication. So Discord Is needed for a good and successful region in NS |

That is true, HC. Discord has made communication easier overall. I do see people of all backgrounds and ideologies speaking with each other more due to Discord. Sometimes, I do wonder if it's too much sometimes. It kind of reminds me of social media. Previously, it was so much easier to just stick in your own bubble and kind of not be exposed to what people are saying about you behind the scenes. Kind of like social media, players are given so much more exposure to all things good, bad, and ugly. |

I've always felt that the more you hear thoughts and opinions different from you're own is good because it gets you to question why you think the way you do and if you can't logically and/or empirically justify those beliefs it's time to question their validity. |

The best part of the adoption of Discord is that it's been fairly universal, and reduced the fragmentation of the GP community. Historically different segments of it used different tools/platforms - IRC, msn, skype, etc - which very much influenced the creation of "bubbles", which I view as having been a bad thing. With most people on the same platform it's easier for us all to interact, and that means a reduction in hostility and pettiness long-term. It's harder to "hate" a group of people if you know them, and many of the GP groups tended to be closed off by intent or accident. A reduction in the BS personal squabbles and pettiness can only be a good thing, and Discord is helping with that. |

Topic of discussion - this being the first time in recent history that pretty much all of gameplay has shared the same platform. One path of discussion that comes to mind is increased intermingling across factions. Specifically, there have been several prominent raider-to-defender defects attributed in part to having more interaction with ... well, "honest views of the other side" versus "led on by propaganda" can be a hot button topic. |
