The impact of gender in NS has been examined before by Xoriet and Mousebumples, specifically the experience of a female player in NationStates. The interviews shared today brought a lot of interesting insight to further the conversation. Some themes that I took away from the answers include the importance of female representation in military organizations, the level of connection that many female players have to each other because there are in the minority within NS/raiding, and if gender does play a factor in the experience of a female player, it will most likely be a negative impact. With that said, every player's experience is very personal and subjective. The atmosphere/region/org that a player is in plays a huge role in this. In a respectful environment, I suspect that OOC issues that many female players face are limited. Overall, I think it is important to be mindful not to be part of the problem, but rather the solution. While female players have some shared experiences, they are each complex, strong individuals. It is finding that balance of being aware of issues that occur, while also not assuming something about someone's experience. When I brought up that I was doing this topic, many of the speakers and other female players were all about it. I could sense a lot of passion and pride with being able to speak about their experiences and I hope that others can learn from them. Edited by Jakker, Jul 1 2017, 02:37 AM.

I've seen that many people have really enjoyed the interviews. What thoughts did you have reading them? Anything learned? What are you taking away from them?

I absolutely loved these interviews and found something really interesting and important in each one. It makes me want to know all of these people more than I already do ![]() Rigel and Altino definitely brought up this kind of double standard towards females where the idea is that you are only advancing or getting a position because of your gender or alternatively you are seen as less than capable because of your gender. Not that gender or perception doesn't play a part but that's reality and focusing on that above else (like for example there are def. players who are "cults of personality" and we don't focus on their gender but chalk it up to that vibe). Also, Rigel said "Women need to stick together." I totally agree with this. My deepest friendships and trusts in this game are the females starting from Xoriet to all the wonderful girls I now know. There's also a lot of fun "feminine" stuff to talk about or bond over. Mostly people should be able to be themselves without fear of like "am I being judged for being girly or "should I try to be more like x bc they're taken more srsly." Generally, I don't see stark IC\OC distinctions and the darker places or people on NS are the ones that kind of think putting an IC label on their behavior is a bandage for just being a jerkface dirtbag. I also think the interviews and Yuno's advice should be posted up in a dispatch on NS or sent to every player (along with you're not alone and ask your fellow lady for help). Personally, I know several times where I've been faced with the darker or uncomfortable side of NS and gone straight to one of the great people I trust for help and gotten support and advice and actual solutions. |

You bring up several good points, Escade. It all makes me think about something else as well. I am not a gamer, so I don't know how it is in other games, but with NS it seems to get involved in gameplay especially, a player needs to reveal several RL facts about them. I know that some games are used as an escape from the real world where it doesn't matter who you actually are. You are free to be any shape, size, gender, character you want. While that is still somewhat the case in NS, there are definitely limitations there. I do know there are some NS players who would rather not share their gender or other info and just kind of be free to act how they want. I think in some ways, this is all used as some sort of accountability. In my experience, I have seen it becoming more of a thing to share RL info about yourself. And I wonder if that is something we should expect? Edited by Jakker, Jul 2 2017, 10:18 AM.

I think that females are the only ones that think there is some stereotype because I, and everyone else in the game, don't give two shits what your gender is or what you choose to identify as. Promotions, elections, etc have nothing to do with gender. There is no "double standard" because NEWSFLASH this is a game. Alternatively, there have been situations where I've seen females use their gender to take advantage of other males, or participating in an act where they make false accusations of sexual harassment for their personal gain in the game, which is absolutely wrong and as bad as -- if not worse than -- the sexual harassment itself in my opinion. |

You may not see it. But I do. I've experienced it. I've had to sit in a discord call where I was told point blank that the only reason I had advanced anywhere was because of the fact I was a chick. All I had to do was say I had tits and I would get a promotion. All this coming from someone who claimed to be my friend. And yeah, I know there are some people that do that shit and it's detestable. Using your... attributes to advance instead of your abilities, while other people do everything right and never go any where. It sucks dude. |
